No paper, these were truly opaque through-and-through. The quilter who produced them knew that it was a problem and her website said if you emailed her with your receipt, she would replace them with her newer style which were - ahem - clear, but she never replied to the many emails I sent. :(

If you have an Ace Hardware or a True Value Hardware store, they may cut one for you. I would go there and ask.
