My son went to wallyworld for groceries and came back with one 5 yard bolt for 5 dollars for me to make my DGD some night gowns,he had the nerve to tell me they had two huge tables of fabrics for sale,so you guys have fun shopping,I will have to wait until the next time.

PegD 11-06-2010 01:19 AM

Be careful, I'm not sure it is flame retardant for nightgowns. Just a thought.

FortMyers 11-06-2010 01:20 AM

Funny!

mic-pa 11-06-2010 01:31 AM

PegD, I just have to say I made the same quilt that is in your avatar in the same colors. LOL Small world.

SuziC 11-06-2010 02:59 AM

PegD 11-06-2010 03:29 AM

Yarn or Fabric 11-06-2010 03:47 AM

Ours still haven't gotten it. I keep hearing about the $5 bolts around the country but so far not in my town ... maybe one day...

MissM 11-06-2010 06:06 AM

We had it out our Walmart but it it was all cotton/poly the type of fabric you would use to make a dress. Nothing suitable for quilts

CarrieAnne 11-06-2010 06:08 AM

LOL, my little Sister is comeing over today, bet she would LOVE to visit Walmart!

aunt ria 11-06-2010 06:42 AM

I went in and asked at ours too and they had no clue! It's the only reason I've ever gone in there. Don't really like WM's.

janb 11-06-2010 07:27 AM

Our WM only has fat quarters...and not very nice selection. I keep watching and waiting. They are newly redecorated and very clean.

BellaBoo 11-06-2010 08:05 AM

Walmart here had some of those bolts. The fabric was very thin and mostly rayon/cotton. I couldn't think of anything to make from it quilting wise so I bought several bolts to use for tabletop to floor cloths for various occasions for local town community room.

pab58 11-06-2010 10:10 AM

One of my local Walmart's carries the $5 bolts, but you have to be careful because some of it is quite thin.

MaggieLou 11-06-2010 12:38 PM

You might want to check the bolt to make sure it's all usable. The bolts are seconds (that's why they're that cheap) and may have streaks where the dye missed or other flaws. I was in WalMart yesterday and a lady wanted one of these bolts and it had streaks all through it where the dye missed.

annyroony2 11-06-2010 01:18 PM

Our local Walmart had couple of tables also, but there was nothing I could use, was cheap and looked cheap.

I have found that various woven fabrics will work for simple projects like lap robes or drag-around-quilts for kids.

sgardner 11-06-2010 06:09 PM

Cheap fabric might be good for the dog or cat bed, or one of those projects where you rip strips to wrap around a cable and weave into a basket, or the strip rugs that you braid. I'd have to see it, but given my WallyWorld eliminated almost all of the craft/fabric section, I doubt if ours will carry it.

benndm 11-06-2010 07:45 PM

My Wal Mart has been selling these 5 yd pieces but there is nothing there that I would use in a quilt.

trisha 11-06-2010 08:45 PM

Went to a Walmart about 1/2 hour away that is the onlyh one within 50 miles that still has a fabric dept. They Christmas fabric that I bought 2 weeks ago was on sale for 2.44 a yard, and it is really nice. I originally paid 5.00 a yard. They have a huge collection and had some boxes sitting on the cutting table. I took a peek and it was a new shipment of fabric that wasn't out yet. They haven't heard if the fabric dept. will be closing or not. So I will just keep buying until they aren't.

earlori7 11-07-2010 03:47 AM

We live in a rather small place population wise and were thrilled when we got a Walmart because there was no where to go and pick up a sewing notion without driving 20 miles either way. Big disappointment. No fabric and few notions. Then one of the other Walmarts took out their fabric. The fabric and quilt shop choices are so slim in this area that when I drive to a bigger city (50 miles from here) I go crazy. I did see the bolts at the store in Morehead City, but none of them seemed suitable.

bluadept 11-07-2010 03:59 AM

I went to walmart last week and decided to check out the fabric department. Well it was a single craft size table with the bolts piled on top what few there were. Now I am not a fabric snob or anything but the junk that they had there looked and felt like not first or seconds but thirds. After working in a Joann's for 10 years you get a feel for the fabric. What is there is a joke just to keep us quiet. I do alot of crafty things on the side that doesn't need great fabric. But this stuff is not even good fabric. The fabric they use to have on the discount $ table was better than this junk. Just don't bother .

OH yea!!! I forgot my walmart in town all had one table of fabric and my DH bought me 5 bolts of fabric!!!!

karenfae 11-07-2010 04:37 AM

I don't like Wal-Mart fabric but that is me, buy what you can afford I say. Our Wal-Mart has very little- I used to buy notions there now you can barely even find any of that - now I buy my notions at Hobby Lobby. I order all of my fabric on line as no quilt shops within 85 miles in any direction they even closed our Hancocks several years ago. When we travel I sometimes stop at quilt shops in other states and find fabric but mainly I find the sales on line you can find a lot of them if you look.

Annevc 11-07-2010 04:40 AM

Wallyworld has fabric, not in CT. They stopped selling fabric years ago. I love their prices and fabric.

lillybeck 11-07-2010 05:48 AM

I am seeing more and more NC people on here and it is making me miss my kids up there. lol

I guess it is true - you only get what you pay for!!

QuiltQtrs 11-07-2010 06:35 AM

$5 per bolt fabrics are to laugh ....My store has same deal but quality is
very poor, absolutely not suitable for quilting, questionable if good for
nightwear, clothing. The colors and prints in Fat Quarters would be
great if the fabric wasn't so thin you can actually see through it. Again,
not for dedicated quilters. If only Walmart would get the message:
Quilters are begging for restoration of a quality fabric department!

ggoens 11-07-2010 07:05 AM

My son and daughter in law did the same thing Friday night. They actually brought me four bolts! The fabric they got is pretty but it doesn't mention anything about being flame retardant. I was so surprised that walmart is getting anything back. I am in Richmond, VA and they had two tables as well. Maybe they think this will keep us all from begging that they get the fabric section back! :)

judithb 11-07-2010 07:38 AM

It is one of those things that , "If it seems to be too good to be true, it most likely is"!

ShirlinAZ 11-07-2010 07:58 AM

Walmart is doing away with cutting stations. When new stores are built or old ones renovated, the cutting stations will be replaced with a selection of pre-cuts/packaged. Ugh! I hate it. Rumor I heard is that Sam's wife was a seamstress and insisted on the cutting stations. When she passed away corporate (in typical bean-counter fashion) decided they could increase profits by eliminating people needed to cut and maintain that area. One of our stores has already been remodeled. I've heard the other is soon to follow.

mar32428 11-07-2010 08:38 AM

My Wally has had $5.00 bolts for about a month. I think they're trying to fill in till they redecorate in Feb. when they drop the bolt fabric. I've picked up a couple of bolts that were pretty good and cost came out to $1.00/yard. Most of it was junky.

Holly's Mom 11-07-2010 08:47 AM

Most of the Wally-worlds in TX have no fabric!! That's OK with me since it was always a cheap fabric. If I'm going to put hours of work in something, I'll use good fabric!

Roberta 11-07-2010 09:15 AM

Our local Wally World has had the bolts for a few months now but it's not good quality at all and ugly choices.

frostbaa 11-07-2010 09:35 AM

Gal that lives down the street told me they had $5 bolts at the Avon Indiana store this week.

Kathleen charnell 11-07-2010 11:27 AM

Our Walmart used to have a fairly nice selection of material on the $2 table. Those 5yd for $5 things are so cheap I wouldn't touch them!!!!

everybody's mother 11-07-2010 11:36 AM

can't the cheap fabric at wm be used in chenille? I've never done that, but wouldn't think it would matter what quality the fabric is or even the content. Let me know what you think.

sewnsewer2 11-07-2010 11:40 AM

My wally world has it too but they are really thin, so I didn't get any. They are selling the whole bolt (what's left on it) for $5.

Old news ... but still a bunch of us (disgruntled quilters) are VERY upset about it. My daughter travels to WM corporate two or three times a year. A couple years ago when this was such an uproar, I asked her to see what she could find out. When she was in a meeting with some of the powers-that-be, she asked what was going on with fabrics. The buyer that she deals with pointed out the person who made the decision to get rid of fabric. It was a man, of course. She briefly spoke with him and he said (with a wide grin) that it was an easy decision since fabric was taking up too much valuable space and "was no longer an asset to the company as a whole.":roll: (As an aside ... most stores that I see have used that "valuable space" by expanding automotive or sporting goods.) I just think that Sam Walton must be turning over in his grave to see what his business has become. :-o
