To date I've only used the traditional "U" shaped seam ripper, but am thinking of treating myself to a Gingher and upgrading my supplies one at a time. I've looked at them and since it's differently shaped than what I'm used to.....just wondering if anyone else uses it and what they think of its performance.....

Thanks!

I just purchased a Gingher seam ripper like you are talking about. Haven't tried it yet though, so I'm no help. Sorry.

leaha 10-29-2010 01:29 PM

I love mine!!!

craftybear 10-29-2010 01:29 PM

What is your favorite seam rippers?

I bought one several years ago and had a light on one end at Joann's and now I can't find them anylonger. Was so cool and i will need to do a search online and see if they still make them.

Candace 10-29-2010 01:30 PM

My favorite seam ripper, is an unused seam ripper.

akrogirl 10-29-2010 01:30 PM

Love all my Gingher products, including the seam ripper.

leaha 10-29-2010 01:32 PM

the one I grab first when I need one

Maggiesmom 10-29-2010 01:36 PM

I use a small little seam ripper that is very sharp and is almost like a knife.

justwannaquilt 10-29-2010 01:38 PM

A single edge razor blade is all I use.

Kitsie 10-29-2010 01:39 PM

I like Candace's answer however I OFTEN use my "fat-handled" one. If anyone would make one with a non-shiny surface like brushed metal, I'd love it better! So hard when your task light bounces off the picker.

gale 10-29-2010 02:30 PM

I returned the one I got. I know it's not for 'picking' seams but that's what I'm used to and I prefer it. I got a surgical type one from a shop for $4 and it has a smaller tip so it's easier. I still prefer my old fashioned one though-I can leave the top off and not worry about slicing myself up accidentally.

I like that. Candace! I use an Exacto knife - new blades are extremely sharp, and they have a nice, fine point. Look for one with a cover on the end.

I usually use a rotary cutter.

ktmo815 10-30-2010 03:52 AM

as long as it works - I use whatever I pick up first.

quilt3311 10-30-2010 04:09 AM

My favorite seam ripper is a Wahl mans mustache trimmer. It unsews faster than I can sew it wrong! (AGAIN!!!)

quiltbuddy 10-30-2010 04:41 AM

I think mine is a Clover seam ripper with a brown handle and clear top. Love it! I used to work in a sweatshop where we took mens' shirt cuffs apart and shortened the sleeve length. This would take less than two minutes each (including reattaching) since we used the presser foot of the machine to hold the cuff taut and slip the seam ripper into the seam and rip the old stitches out towards you. This took practice (and nerve) but it sure worked. I realize that not all seam ripping could be done with this method. I can't remember what type of a seam ripper we used.

I probably won't be the only one asking, how do you use that that to rip seams apart?

This is what I use to cut apart my chain piecing. Great help for my arthritis.

Didn't I read just the other day that someone thought the Gingher wasn't very sharp? You might want to search the board.

I absolutely love mine! I have the Gingher rotary cutter too. Love 'em both! Spendy but worth the extra $$$$.

katied772 10-30-2010 08:56 AM

I love anything Gingher but hate seam rippers in general because of what they are used for. Is the Gingher different than others?

BellaBoo 10-30-2010 09:49 AM

With the new surgical steel hook rippers, you don't pick the stitches out, you zip them open.

gramquilter2 10-30-2010 10:19 AM

I just bought the Alex Anderson 4 in 1 Essential Sewing Tool and think it has the best seam ripper ever. I like my Gingher scissors but not the rotary cutter, the blade doesn't seem to last as long as Olfa cutters.

deebee 10-30-2010 11:25 AM

Gramquilter2...I have to agree with you...Gingher rotary cutter blades don't stay sharp very long...and they're expensive!

Crickett Sweet 10-30-2010 12:15 PM

I know it's a lot more expensive but I have been wanting one ever since I first tried it so I bit the bullet and ordered one last week. Hasn't arrived yet

I love my gingher seam ripper! Also like that you can get replacement blades for it, although I can't for the life of me figure out how you go about replacing them! Lol

Thank you I needed that and just did not know which one to buy. I have already ordered and it will be here 11/4 with no shipping fee. Thanks again. Gail

How do you use it?

Dee 10-30-2010 08:15 PM

I just bought a fat handle one. I love it. Easier to handle.

Feather3 10-30-2010 08:52 PM

I've used this seam ripper for over 25 years now. It's never gone dull & I've even used it to cut leather seams apart many times.

debbie1983 10-30-2010 11:20 PM

Me too---I love mine and have different blades that I use for differnt fabrics.

e4 10-30-2010 11:30 PM

I have the Gingher seam ripper and rarely use it. I just don't care for the way it operates. It also only works for seam ripping, not well at all for unpicking stitches like other seam rippers, sharp pointed scissors, or some surgical tools can do.
