Hi guys! I am giving a talk at my local Quilt Society meeting on Friday night and was wondering if I could ask your opinions???
I am talking about how the internet can be used to help us quilters and wondered if you could spare a moment to tell me your TOP 3 internet resources - whether they be shops or free pattern sites - tutorials - etc etc..... Of course I am going to be telling the group about this forum!!! Also - if you mention a shop, could you please take a moment to look at their site ansd see if they will ship to Ireland? It would be a shame if we got loads of great ideas and then couldn't use them!!! I would check myself but I have very poor internet here up inthe hills of Ireland and you may well do it a lot faster than I can!!! Thanks so much in anticipation of some interesting responces!!! R |
Hi,
Good Luck with your talk. The three sites i use the most often are www.quilterscache.com - www.blockcentral.com and - www.BellaOnline.com they all have great info on quilting. |
You tube videos showing help with techniques when you can't get to a class. example curver master foot,
and the cutting mat with the slots, sorry I can't remember the name of it. |
|
Thanks Guys! Particulalry Lesley - I know they are good for my pals if you are using them in Sligo!!!
Keep em coming please!! |

rossvillequilts.com
quiltingbythebay.com |
I like http://www.quilterscache.com/ for free patterns. It's very well organized.
|
I have a question. I have a load of sites bookmarked for various things from newbie info to say free applique sites, purses, pin cushions, etc. Does your guild have newbies in it that could use that type of info?
|
Oh yes! We have new quilters and old hands!
A lot of our members are not too keen on the internet - that is why I am giving the talk - I find so much help, encouragement and information (not to mention bargains!) on here!!! ANy ideas would be gratefully recieved. |

she also has wonderful fabrics for sale. I love most of her patterns and they are fairly easy to do. you just have to follow the pics on how to do it. I like quilters catch also. as for fab shops that ship to you I am not sure. There are those out there that would know better than I. There is also a section on this board for people who are willing to redirect an order to you if there is a place that does not ship to you. That would be a nice thing to share with your fellow quilters. It might be a little bit more money to ship but sometimes it is worth it when you can't get a certain fabric somewhere else that is willing to ship to you. |
I watch a lot of youtube videos. I especially like Missouri Star Quilt Company's video's and Sharon Schamber's.
I also watch videos on QNNTV.com, but that is a paid subscription. Free Magazine: Quilt Possum is nice. Lots of ads, but content is nice. www.Quiltposium.com http://quilting.about.com/ This is a nice site with a newsletter. Lots of patterns and information. Moda has lots of free patterns. Jean |
So nice of you to do this for your friends and quilting group. Some of the things I refer members to most are the Cathedral Windows tutorials:
http://hyena-in-petticoats.blogspot....-tutorial.html I give this link also because it is a different method. One method might work better for some than the other. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-35742-1.htm Also: attaching the binding & mitering: http://www.quiltville.com/binding.shtml Also: Easy way to end the binding: http://ankastreasures.wordpress.com/.../binding-tips/ Also: How to turn the corners when binding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wprg5...eature=related Would be great to know how the meeting turns out. Good luck to you and Bravo! |
Three things I use the most are tutorials (i.e. this board, youtube, etc.), information from this board, and quiltville.
|
Quilters tv is free
Sewing with Nancy, Eleanor Burns and Kaye Wood all have free videos at their sites too. :D:D:D http://www.quilterstv.com/ http://sewingwithnancytv.com/ some of these are basic sewing/projects and techniques, others are quilting related. http://www.quiltinaday.com/theater/ http://www.kayewoodtv.com/ktv/ |
WOW!
Thanks for all your help with this! RX |
I have learned alot from Quiltville.com Exuberhant color and Missouri Quilt Co youtube tutorials but mainly from this board for great inspiration!!!Hope all goes well with your talk. Your own work should be inspiration enough!!
|
I spend a lot of time on the board talking about quilting but I have learned so much and gotten so many ideas, that it is worth it. www.quilterscache.com is a great site.
|
Most of the sites I go to have already been mentioned but I'd also add that most of the manufacturers of fabric have a free patterns section. I may or may not use the fabric line but the patterns are great.
|
Quilters Cache
Yahoo Quilting Groups You Tube |
Maybe also print this post and give each a copy as you begin your talk. They will see how we are encouraging them to use the internet and be happy quilters like we are. It would be wonderful if they would also join the Quiltingboard so we could enjoy their friendship and knowledge as well. Please say hello for us.

Hi! My top 3 have been already mentioned. Here are 2 more:
1) www.thequiltshow.com There is a lot of information on the Daily Blog and the Quilt Gallery without becoming a paid member. A paid membership gives you access to the shows with Alex Anderson, Ricky Tims and guests who are well known in the quilting world. 2). www.quiltshops.com On this site, you can search for fabric and supplies from over 200 quilt shops. I didn't research each shop as the whether or not they will ship to Ireland. I use this site frequently when I'm looking for something specific, ie. red paisley. |
Quilt University, online quilting classes.
http://www.quiltuniversity.com/index.html |
The most valuable thing you can show them is how to search. It's "give a woman a link or teach her how to find anything." Sort of like men and that fish thing except women won't sit in a boat and drink beer all day. LOL
|
allpeoplequilt.com -- lots of free patterns and ideas
|
mywebquilter.com..on this site you can color your blocks to see if you like them before you buy fabric or to use what you already have. there are hundreds of patterns to color.
|
YouTube tutorials have been a valuable resource for me.
|
Everything I thought of has been mentioned except alot of the American Quilting magazines have free patterns for blocks and quilts.. go to their magazine web sites.
Also why not have block of the month using one of the web sites mentioned ... ?? I have a question for you ... since you are in Ireland do you have alot quilt shops there? I love hearing about other countries and their quilters and what they are doing...what type of quilting they like? Piecing or applique? hand or machine quilting? What are the trends there? Have fun at your meeting and please let all the Irish quilters know they have fellow quilters around the world !! Hugs Quiltinmama alias Vicki |
I'm self taught from internet and books, so don't forget book purchases.
The Book Depository is cheaper than Amazon, and ships worldwide free. Have bought all my quilting books there. http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/WEBS...S/homepage.php |
I use equilter.com for fabric - yes they ship all over the world and have 10s of thousands of fabrics.
Quiltville.com and quilterscache.com for great free patterns. |
They can also google the fabric makers such as Moda, Michael Miller, etc. and each site has great info and free patterns and pictures of their fabrics.
|
Quilting.about.com
Great for beginners and others. D in TX |
For those who really seem to be open to what you are presenting, you might show them online Fabric Shop Hops. It's great practice in navigating websites, lets you check out all kinds of fabrics, and you get a pattern and a chance to win something if you find enough bunnies!
http://www.fabshophop.com/ |
this board; Missour Star Quilt Co. and our local shop Happiness is Quilting.
|
crafttownfabrics.net They have over 7000 Bolts of Fabric
and they ship all over the world. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE fun!!! |
I like the tutorials on quilters blog sites.
|
Taking into consideration that we are not including this board for #1, which is my #1, the others would be
www.thousandsofbolts.com for price of fabric and are very quick. http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html for alot of free block patterns. http://tutorials.missouriquiltco.com/ for tutorials. |
