I read an article yesterday that suggested some things people have given up for quilting. It listed a healthy diet, exercise, time with family, and a balanced budget as some of the sacrifices. What have you "given up" for the love of quilting?
|
My exercise has diminished and it coincides with me having my own sewing room these past 6 months. 'Nuff said.
|
Sleep.
Because I haven't given up too many of the others on the list, my best time to work is AFTER the kidlet is in bed, which has led to some late nights recently. Cheers, K |
T.V. and some computer time. I now do more with friends but they are quilting friends and I have closer relationships with those people. I go out to quilt stores and shows more often and get plenty of excercixe there. LOL I also quilt with some of my children and many come do their home work in my studio or watch TV when I quilt. Overal what I gave up, TV, time I sure do not miss. For me quilting is also very therapeutic. I am not one to air my feelings to much and it is a great way for me to work through things. One thing that I am giving up also is money. Boy expensive hobby and addictive. Oh yeah sleep. LOL I can never seem to quit.
|
excercise, going out to waste money on things other than fabric, batting, thread, etc.
|
I've given up - very easily - TV time - :) Gained family time - I sit with them and do handwork, gained lovely quilts and gifts, gained great friends, gained a love of a hobby I'll never give up!
|
Oh, exercise.........ugh! Actually, I think working so much made me give it up......
|
"Giving up" implies that the quilting replaced something else that was equally enjoyable. The things mentioned are simply "supposed necessities" so "giving up" exercise is not so much a hardship for me. lol
I suppose reading books for pleasure would apply. |
I am obsessive when it comes to projects if they lull on too long I won't complete them. So have given up exercise and eating/snacking alot b/c if I don't exercise I can't possibly come up with an excuse to snack, also snacky hands yucky fabric, and we just can't have that now can we?? ;)
|
I have given up boredom, depression, free time.
|
I think the only thing I have "given up" is the obsessive reading. One obsession for another :) I haven't given up sleep but do lose alot of it due to planning and whatnot of the next quilt.
I do still read just not as much - I like to take periodic breaks from quilting and that is when I pick up a few good books again. |
Everything except the exercise! My exercise involves getting up from the chair to iron, going out to the shop (about 35 feet from the door and involves 3 steps down/up)...I think I get PlENTY of exercise! Doc doesn't agree though...LOL
Actually, I haven't given up much....I enjoy all the other stuff AND I'm so much more by having this board. I've developed friendships from being in here.....every day, every hour...LOL |
I am very selfish with my quilting time. DH expected me to go to sporting events with him. I asked him to go to a quilt trunk show one time. He said he would never do that again he was bored to death. I said oh really? I haven't been to a sport event since.
|
I have not given up a thing. I retired last year and my quilting time is a replacement for the 60+ hours per week that I worked. I still get everything else done, including exercise and family time. In fact, I do more of that than I did when I worked. I earned my quilting and QB time and I'm not going to feel guilty about it.
|
Quilting is something I've gained. It's keeps me busy during the evenings now that we're empty nesters. I go to water aerobics after work twice a week. On those evenings I usualy don't sew and use the time for housework. I usually sew on friday and/or sat nites & a couple of hours during the week. I bring my lunch to work and stay out of the department stores. Everything in moderation.

Laundry & sleep..
Unfortunately when hubby gives me his 'look', I know hes out of underwear... |
I really haven't had to give up anything. My quilting works around my schedule not the other way around. We take the dogs out for walks 2 or 3 times a week and go about 2 miles each way.
The house stays clean since there are only two here. Laundry gets done, folded but not always put away the same day. But thats not because of quilting, its cause I am too lazy.....LOL And meals get cooked, I cook at home alot to control our fat intake. |

If I want to have a good time....shopping, etc I leave HIM at the house. If he wants to have a good time hunting/fishing he leaves me at the house. A great arrangement (45 years worth) |
I am a crafter...have been all my life, but since I started quilting, I no longer seem to have time to set up for painting, or beading, or any of the other crafts I have loved for a long time. Quilting seems to take care of my need for creativity. It is an art form, that is usable and not just appreciated by sight. My family are grown and moved away and so I do have time to quilt for grands and great-grands. I dont feel I have really given up anything, just turned my creativity down another street.
|
I have given up my dining room table (now it's a sewing table) and my china cabinet (it now holds my stash).
|
I give up nothing but a tad of depression. Quilting puts me on a new 'high'. After all, I am using up some of my endless stash, I am gaining a new piece of art, and I am insulating myself from some of the other stuff that goes on around the house. I am off to new heights when I quilt. Don't bother me with mundane stuff!
|
Given up lots of money for quilting, but , what the heck.
I have gained alot more, my quilting friends are the best. |

np3----exactly my thoughts to a "T"!--well said |
I've given up a business and a marriage!
Well, that sounds worse than it was. He bought the quilt shop as a dumping ground for me; when I figured that out, I lost my heart for it, took 2 years to get the shop closed, and then agreed with his demand for a divorce. I actually don't give up anything these days except free-spending fabric shopping, which, with my stash, isn't a necessity anyway. I've gained so much more than I've ever given up! |
HOUSEWORK!

Computer and TV time. Which for me, is a good thing.
I've also given up having a "perfect" house, but again, a good thing. The counters are clean, the floor is swept. The bathroom is (mostly) clean! :D :D :D |
I've gained more. Haven't given anything up, just changed the things I spend extra money on and I think I'm much happier now that I'm quilting again.
|
I have the same response. I have retired and now the creativity that went into teaching goes into quilting. And I enjoy it more than Suduko!
|
Loneliness.
|
Actually I have given up quilting time to be on this board. I am on here at least a couple of hours during the day, time that I used to be quilting. What's up with that. It is just so engrossing to see what you creative people come up with every day.
|
Don't you dare! No more chatting until you put in some time quilting! It's the experience that makes this valuable. BTW I am reading a very silly mystery about death by rotary cutter. Be careful everyone!!

Anti-depressants--When I am creating I feel better about myself and don't need them.
TV- DH likes watching the same movies over and over again. Budget- I have been unemployed for almost 2 years. My budget was blown a looong time ago. I firmly believe in the 3 R's Re-Purpose,Re-Use, Re-Cycle. I "get" much more than I "give up". The happiness of watching my DG's drag around a quilt I have given them is absolutely priceless. |
I haven't given up a thing , my quilting and being on the board and my reading at night keeps me sane

I don't feel like I have given up anything. I have lost a lot of quilting time by being on here so much but I am retired now and after many years working in a factory I try to enjoy life.
|
We all have lost time which will never gain again but we gain FRIENDS that we will never lose. Thanks to all of you for being there for each other. Don't forget our New Zeland friends.
|
I don't believe I actually have given up anything. If anything, I have gained many things all of which are pretty positive.
Down time, stress reliever, family time as sewing room is in great room, I have something I do that I love and others in family admire and love, I learned NOT to take away from household budget but save for purchases, I learned I do not have to 'sneak' stuff into the house, I learned not everyone will like or admire my projects and that is ok, and many more things. And of course all my quilty friends on here. |
