Is this a good deal?

My husband offered to be me a sewing cabinet (1 that i can put my machine in n it be level w/the top). I started my search and could not justify the 1000+ prices i was seeing for brand new ones. So i headed to 1 of my favorite places to find a deal....and came across Someone in my area that is selling a Horn sewing cabinet AND a baby lock Design Pro sewing machine for $275.00 (yes, that is the asking price for both items)

I know nothing about baby lock machines. Should I jump on this deal? Btw he also offered to buy me a new machine for Christmas.

I appreciate any inputs you wonderful folks can offer.

if it is in your area it is worth checking out- go see it- see what kind of shape the cabinet is in- try out the machine- see if it meets your expectations- if you like it & it's in good shape then it's worth it.

wolph33 08-30-2012 02:13 PM

yes,go check it out and make an offer if you like them.

cellin 08-30-2012 02:15 PM

Are baby lock machines good or is it a machine that has been known to need frequent repairs?

lynnie 08-30-2012 02:15 PM

Let us know what you end up getting

auntpiggylpn 08-30-2012 02:31 PM

I would think that $275 just for the Horn Cabinet is a good deal! Even if the machine isn't what you are looking for. You can always turn around and sell the machine and still get your new one for Christmas. I would definately go and check it out.

Lori S 08-30-2012 02:35 PM

Just the cabinet alone if its in any kind of deceint shape is worth it . Let us know how you make out on this.

cellin 08-30-2012 02:43 PM

From the pictures I've seen the cabinet looks to be in great shape. How wrong of me would it be to see if she would take less?
Oh my that's table is expensive.....this is just about identical to the one for sale.....only difference is the drawers on the right.

Go check it out. If you keep dabbling, it'll be gone when you get around to it!

cellin 08-30-2012 03:35 PM

I'm trying to make arrangements now to go see them. The items were her moms who is in the hospital then moving to assisted living when she gets out and cannot take these with her.

After researching the price of the cabinet alone if nothing else I will buying them for the table alone, as long as the pictures are true :-)

babylocks are awesome, my espire has never needed repairs

BellaBoo 08-30-2012 04:18 PM

If you can afford something then why go through the fret of justifying the cost? That is not any fun at all. Enjoy new things.

cellin 08-30-2012 04:26 PM

Woo hoo I'm going tomorrow night to check them out, hope they are as posted ;-)

Maureen 08-30-2012 04:30 PM

I have two friends with Babylock machines and they both love them.

LynnVT 08-30-2012 04:31 PM

Wow, sounds like a great deal!! Hope it all works out for you!

I have a Babylock Jane - straight stitch only and I piece on it and have quilted many quilts on it. No repairs, 2-1/2 years old.
For that price I would imagine they are both gone by now.

barny 08-30-2012 05:37 PM

My sister has one like this and you can move the machine up or down to fit. It is a really fine cabinet.

patsynel 08-30-2012 05:48 PM

I have a Babylock Quest Plus, I've been very please with it. I do all of my FMQ with it. I hope the cabinet is what you need.

I agree! I have 2 BabyLocks, one is around 10 years old, and the other one i bought last week.

alleyoop1 08-31-2012 05:55 AM

Baby Loc is a good brand. I'd buy both. It can never hurt to have a back-up machine.

ljptexas 08-31-2012 06:00 AM

Wow. sounds like a deal-breaker to me. Those cabinets are sooo expensive & the thingy that lowers the machine, wow.....
Go for it, girl!!!! If you couldn't use the machine, try learning or maybe sell it...

Peepers 08-31-2012 06:56 AM

I have the Horn Quilter's Dream and I can tell you they are very well made cabinets, very sturdy, so this is a great price for even just the cabinet. Be sure the mechanism for raising and lowering the machine is in working order. If you want to get a differenct machine, you can always buy a custom insert that fits whatever machine you get. That's a thick piece of plexiglass that fits in the well where the machine is and then wraps around 3 sides of the machine to make a flat surface.

cellin 08-31-2012 10:59 AM

I'm going tonight. Woo hoo i'm super excited, I have been sewing from my dining room table for years and always have to pack things up when company comes then a takes a while before I drag everything back out.

cellin 08-31-2012 11:01 AM

This is the machine

cellin 08-31-2012 04:41 PM

I bought it.....thank you ladies.

Added bonus.....went to move it to my car and found out it has a leaf that lifts up in the back. What a steal!!

joyfuljan 08-31-2012 04:48 PM

So happy for you cellin and sad for me Kim and I had talked and texted several times and she sent me lots of pics last night. Was supposed to send me the measurement of the throat as soon as she got back in town tonight. Kept waiting to hear from her so that hubby and I could go see it. Just got an email a little while ago that she had sold it. Enjoy your good deal!! :)

tjradj 08-31-2012 05:07 PM

For that price, if the cabinet is good, I'd take them both. You may just find a gem in the machine. If it's not, well, no foul, you still get a great cabinet.

Peepers 08-31-2012 05:18 PM

Good job! You got a super deal!

MattieMae 08-31-2012 05:26 PM

Good for you! Glad you acted on it and got a nice machine and cabinet I'd love to have.

Joyfuljan.....Perhaps Cellin will sell you just the machine?

joyfuljan 08-31-2012 06:08 PM

It was the cabinet I wanted as well. haha DH had told me that I could buy a new machine so the throat size of the machine was the make or break part of the deal. From the research I did I suspect it was smaller than I am looking. A great deal for chellin as the cheapest I saw that cabinet online was about $1200. I know she is doing the happy dance. Now to find me a machine that will meet my needs and budget.

Amythyst02 09-01-2012 04:34 AM

I have a Baby Lock Quest and love it!

Beckster 09-01-2012 04:58 AM

I have a babylock that is quite old, still running just great. Haven't used it much lately as I use a Bernina the most.

Quiltlady330 09-01-2012 05:19 AM

I have a Horn cabinet that I got over 10 years ago. I absolutely love it and can't imagine not having it. It is
sturdy and spacious. I paid much much more than that for it. If the cabinet isn't abused that's a good deal...
even excluding the machine.

fmhall2 09-01-2012 05:28 AM

My sewing machine mechanic says Baby Locks and Brothers are the best machines being made today, so go for it.

I had a Babylock Quilters Pro for about 18 months with NO problems at all. While sewing on a Babylock Esante at our Project Linus monthly gathering (at a sewing shop), I fell in love with this one so I traded my machine for this upgraded model. I've had it for 4+ years so far and it's only been in the shop once for cleaning.

I also have a Babylock Enlighten Serger and love it. Have had it a little over a year now and use it regularly. No issues AT ALL.

My personal opinion is that Babylock makes a quality, reliable product and I wouldn't buy anything else.

Not familiar with the one you mentioned but would suggest you sit down at it and try it out to see if you like it.

I converted my quiliting buddy to Babylock. She was an avid Janome fan but now has the Babylock Symphony and loves it.

cdnquilter 09-01-2012 05:40 AM

Even if you just end up with a good cabinet, it would still be a good deal in my opinion !

GammaLou 09-01-2012 06:07 AM

What a wonderful deal!! I have 3 babylock machines and love them all. I would get that deal even though I don't need any more machines. Have fun :)

I bought the Horn sewing/craft table at a quilt show about 7 years ago. It's a humongous, drafting table height cutting table with two swing out table top pieces so I can make it longer or shorter. It has the cutout and the lowering feature for my machine and a full set of drawers on one side. I can cut out my quilts on one side and sew on the other and it's tall enough so I don't have to bend over and hurt my back. Obviously, it's the love of my life and one of the best purchases I've ever made! It was priced about the same as the smaller table and they threw in a chair so I was happy about the deal I was getting. Even better, they discontinued the model so I got it just in time. I don't like the newer model.
I think that you are going to be as thrilled with the table as you are with the machine. What a joy to leave the dining room to be the dining room and have your own space!

junegerbracht 09-01-2012 08:13 AM

I'd buy it just for the cabinet. If the machine works well it's a bonus.

CoyoteQuilts 09-01-2012 11:53 AM

The cabinet is worth more than that and even if you don't like the machine you can sell that. Best deal all ways around.
