This summer I have had the privilege of doing several projects for others. One woman had purchased a baby quilt from me about two years ago - for twin great nephews - and she asked me to sell her one of my bags I'd made (with flip flops appliqued on it!) for a diaper bag for another neice of hers. Then her granddaughter decided she wanted a backpack like purse for school - just delivered it to her this morning. They'd gone out and purchsed the fabric, I had the pattern and it took me about one and a half weeks to get the finished project to her - just this morning. I had agreed to take $35 for the bag (keep in mind THEY purchased the fabric). When she received the bag she came to me with the money and said she did not agree on my price - I nearly fell off my seat - I thought I'd be taking less... She simply said, "You are barely making minimum wage at that price. One look at that bag and others are going ot want one. (the sister has already asked for one!)." She said, "You are selling yourself short, you have great talent and I'm giving you a bit more money." And she handed me the money. We were just beginning church so I couldn't really look - but after - she'd handed me $50!!!! I was so pleased... this means she is willing to pay $70 for the bag!!! We had to celebrate so after church we took the boys to get subs for lunch - something they've wanted for a couple of months now - the extra money went towards the subs!! :) Word of mouth and I'm getting more and more projects to do - I love it!!!

So great to be appreciated! I also tend to under estimate the value of my talents.
Had an example just this week...my dentist's (woman) daughters are in a wedding today. One dress arrived months ago, other one just came in. Dentist called me, asking if I would be on "standby" to shorten the dress if it arrived. Said yes I was willing. Dress arrived, I shortened the satin outer skirt, the netting underskirt and the lining. And pressed everything. When I delivered it (my choice), the dad asked "how much do we owe you?" I told him $25. which he felt was very reasonable. Guess I should have asked more, as no discounts are given in the dentist's chair! Why do we do this to ourselves?

Good for you , and a treat going to Subway. I always under charge for my quilts and projects. I get so tired of people saying , Oh, that's expensive. I do alot of quilts for charieties, and now I just tell people , to go pick out their own material they want and I will charge $500. to make them a quilt. Yes handmade quilts are expensive.

dkabasketlady 09-05-2010 05:28 PM

Congratulations!!! Someone that truly understands how much work is involved in our projects!!

Kathy-r 09-05-2010 05:32 PM

quilt queen 2 09-05-2010 09:58 PM

It sure is nice to know that some people recognise that a lot projects are so time consuming and are willing to pay you for it.So often those who don't sew/quilt/craft think it's all done in minutes! So happy that you had such a nice encounter!

grannie cheechee 09-06-2010 03:29 AM

Its about time someone realizes talent. She is some special person to do that. I think that is great!!!!!!!!

Karyn 09-06-2010 04:14 AM

Nice to be appreciated for how valuable your talent is!!

tdgiffin 09-06-2010 04:18 AM

Wonderful news!

quilt3311 09-06-2010 04:21 AM

Good for you!! In our area people complain about the price one asks for doing work for them. Had one lady call me a few days ago asking if I would finish a quilt top that a neighbor had given her. Of course she thought because I "like to quilt" I could hand quilt it for her. When I quoted a price, she said, "Oh my, I could buy 3 blankets for that." Makes one wonder why they feel entitled to "free".

Joeysnana 09-06-2010 04:25 AM

Good for you!!!

Jodie02b 09-06-2010 04:26 AM

I went school shopping with a friend yesterday they had backpacks for $40-$100 and you just know it's barley going to last the year and everyone will have a similar style. You just created a durable, custom made masterpiece!

grann of 6 09-06-2010 04:26 AM

I'm thrilled for you. Most people don't know what goes into our sewing. I have been sewing for people for years and exactly twice have I gotten a tip. They are always very happy with the finished product and I have several return customers. I think a lot of it has to do with the area in which I live. I don't want to offend anyone who lives in the western Philly suburbs so I won't say what that means.
