Good Pair of Scissors?
I am wanting to purchase a good pair of sewing shears with the blades 4-5 inches in length. Please recommend a good brand to buy. Thanks!

I love my Ginghers that I bought over 30 years ago. I am NOT sure if the quality has been maintained in the passage of time.
|
Gingher shears are wonderfully sharp. As my hands get more arthritic, though, I find I like the Fiskars spring-action shears. They are lightweight and nice to use...moderately priced, too.
|
I like Kai scissors.
|
I have all the Ginghers too. But, I have a set of Mundial scissors that are really nice I bought during the holidays a couple years ago. I got them at Hancock fabric store and they have them all on sale right now. I checked for you on line.
|
I purchased a pair of Ginghers years ago and was disappointed with the quality. Could have been a lemon. Also did not care for the weight of the shears (quite heavy).
For my next pair of scissors, I am going to buy Kai -- probably the ones with the serrated edges. Have seen many great posts about Kai, including how they made a pair of custom scissors for a quilter on the QB who has specific hand problems. If you decide on Kai, buy from their website rather than Amazon -- a better deal for them, and sometimes a better price when I have checked in the past. |
Dovos are wonderful; an expensive brand, so it would be a splurge to buy a pair, but you'll have them for life!

Buy Fiskars at JoAnn's with a 50% coupon or when all scissors are 50% off. |
The best general scissors I have are the Karen K Buckley scissors and the Clover Bordeaux Ultimate scissors. My Gingher metal scissor are a little heavy for me to use much so they are great in the kitchen for household use. I bought a pair of the batting scissor and they are so nice. If you cut a lot of batting they will be worth the price.
I have the Dovo embroidery scissors in my sewing basket for hand sewing. Over the years I have collected a lot of scissors. I have a basket full of all kinds. I like the single layer fabric scissors for quick snips. |
Another vote for Kai.
|
I love my Kai scissors.
|
I have every brand of sewing scissors on the market and my favorite by far is Kai. I have several sizes - small snips, medium all-purpose, and large shears. I even have a Kai nail clipper.
One of the things I love about my Kai shears is the blades are micro-serrated. They grip the fabric as it's being cut; no more slippage. You can get them sharpened for the cost of shipping, also. |
I had a pair of Ginghers that needed sharpening, so I purchased a pair of Fiskars. The Fiskars were so stiff that I find myself NOT using them. I still haven't found someone to sharpen the Ginghers, so I bought another pair! I don't buy them (scissors) very often, but when I do, I buy good quality ones!

My vote is for Kai, also. I was fortune and bought them from the Kai people at a quilt show, so got a great deal.
|
My oldest boy bought me a pair of those Fiskers Spring loaded ones. Those are the ones I use most of the time. Its just so nice to have the scissors open themselves. Less work. Though the Wiss Weiss?? ones I inherited from my grandmother and used for years make great decorations on the wall. Expecially those pinking shears.

My largest cutting scissors,
I love my razor edge Fiskars with the storage sheath. http://www2.fiskars.com/Sewing-Quilt...0#.U-gqA2MbKUk For mid midsize sewing scissors, I LOVE my Havel's. I have the 5.5" length both flat and curved. And the bonuses are the serrated edges and the large finger loops. SUCH a help when you are trying to make fine cuts. http://www.havelssewing.com/fabric-scissors.html For my small scissors. The ones that I keep at my machine - affixed by a magnet - are the purple handled appllique scissors. They are 4" long and 1" blades. The best prices I have found are at Connecting Threads. http://www.connectingthreads.com/too...s__D81935.html Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide. |
I love my Havel's. I just ordered two more pairs from AQS, which has them at a great price with your member discount: https://shop.americanquilter.com/too...html?limit=100
I use Gingher's as well, and like their small scissors for next to my sewing machine: http://gingher.com/product/5-lightwe...ess-blades/30/ |
I also love my Gingher's. I've had them for about 20 years now. I'm really picky and only cut fabric with them and since I only sew with natural fibers they've stayed sharp.

Ok, I'm going to shock everyone. I'm very fond of my ikea scissors. Both my shears and the three pack that runs about $3. They are sharp, light weight and inexpensive.

I love Kai scissors. I also have a pair of Gingher which I like but if I need to pick my absolute favorite, I will have to go with Kai.
|
I use to own a pair of Ginghers that I absolutely loved. The only problem is that I have severe arthritis in my hands and they were too heavy. I know own a pair of Kai scissors that I love.

I have Gingher, Kai, Buckley, and I preferred the Kai...until I discovered, of all brands, Clover Bordeaux. OMG! it is like cutting through butter! I got my first pair on Amazon, then I found them at Tuesday morning last year for $20 less..I bought all that was left for my daughter and family. They are expensive, but so worth it.
|
I have Ginghers ! Three different ones for different uses.
|
I love my ginghers but recently purchased kai scissors. They are just as good in my opinion but a lot cheaper. Look for them at big quilt shows and they have some wonderful specials. If you order from kai on line shipping is free.

Mmmmmmmmmm, scissors. There are several quality brands of scissors, Dovo, Gingher, Sheffield, Wiss, Bohin to name just a few. Fiskars are okay if that's all you can get.
My most used full size pair is Elan. I found them at a quilt store. They come in two sizes, have serrated blades and are very reasonably priced. The thing is, no one pair of scissors is perfect for everything. I have one pair of scissors that I paid $57 for and only use them when I cut the ends of binding. They have the perfect blade width to lay on the ruler to cut the binding to length. I use my Ginghers when I make stuff from Timtex. They're sharp enough to cut it perfectly. I have an itty bitty pair in my hand sewing tin. The tin is exactly big enough to hold a spool of Mettler. |
My Gingher are the best and I've tried other brands as well. They work very well and if you have a scissor sharpener man that comes to quilt shows or fabric stores occasionally (every 3 or 4 years) they maintain their cutting edge well

I have a pair of big Gingher shears and I love them for their look and feel. I know, that's not what scissors are for, but there's something about how solid they are that I just love, and the classic chrome reminds me of my grandmother's sewing scissors so I feel sentimental about them even though they aren't actually her scissors. Mine are a newer pair - I hear complaints about newer Ginghers but I must have gotten lucky; mine slice through all 3 layers of a quilt like it's tissue paper. (So they're not JUST pretty; they also work very very well)
BUT! That heavy solid heft I like so much does definitely make my hands tired if I have to do a lot of cutting. If I'm going to be doing a lot of cutting or already have tired/sore hands, my Kai scissors are my go-to scissors. They cut like a dream too, and are so much lighter and much more comfortable in my hands! |
My larger Gingher shears are at least 50 yrs. old & still cut beautifully as I never cut anything but fabric with them. At my sewing machine I use Mundial med size shears.
|
I absolutely love Kai Scissors. They can be found online at kaiscissors.com They are a wee bit more expensive than some of the other brands but, IMHO, are worth every penny. Always free (and fast) shipping and they have a policy that you can send them back to be sharpened free forever. They make many different types of scissors, so take a look at their Website.

Karen Buckley all sizes.......the blades have little teeth that grip the fabric

I have Weiss, Ginger, Kai, Karen Kay Buckley and Fiskars -- as well as some no-names that I bought at a quilt show. I use Fiskars spring loaded when I am going through several layers. I love the Karen Kay Buckley and Kai -- the weight is great and I use them mostly for trimming. If I am trimming curves, nothing beats the Karen Kay Buckley serrated edges (I used to use pinking shears for this, but no more). I have some small, no name curved tips that I use at the sewing machine to trim thread -- they have big holes and thin points and they do a great job. Have tried to replace them with Ginger and Havels and no luck (hence, I have a collection).
