Graph paper -
Am I the only person in the quilting world that still uses it?
yep... LOL actually I doubt it
I still have some but haven't used it since I bought my first EQ program in 1995. Don't use my coloring pencils either.
I use it! Mainly for working out designs and the size to cut pieces. I also use it when trying to create a brand new design from scratch.
I use it to figure out what size to make setting pieces and fill strips for the modern quilts that I design. I'm trying to learn EQ7 but have to admit it is way easier for me to pull out the graph paper when trying to solve those kinds of problems.
I still use it. I have a quilt sketchbook (with graph paper) I use it to keep ideas and to save blocks I've seen and liked. It also has beginning sketches of some of my quilts. I also tuck folded graph paper in it. I enjoy going back and looking through it and even shaking my head and laughing.
I use it for planning and designing. I found a composition book (you know the ones with the black and white cover) with graph paper inside instead of lined at Walmart. Only one there and have never seen another one since. I made a fabric cover for it and I use it for sketches, planning, designing, keeping track of measurements, etc. When I use it up, I don't know what I will use. Only drawback is that it is not perforated, so if you tear out a sheet, another one on the opposite side will fall out.
I love graph paper and use it often.
If I need it I print it out the size grid I need. I use EQ7 for color and drafting. BearPawquilter, Staples have those graph composition books.
I use it all the time. I have also printed it onto foundation paper which is really handy when I am graphing a one-off or a trial block. I work better with a visual aid so I love the stuff. (and I still have my coloured pencils :) Guess I am a technical dinosaur)
I would love to copy Moonworks reply, but the 3 ring binder in my "Mom-cave" would make me a liar. As would the diagrams of patterns that are on my desk or in that book.
Bearpaw, you might check for another of your composition books now. I think I saw them in school supplies this past week. Happy sketching, Susan |
I use it all the time and keep my diagram with the paper copies of the quilts that I create. Retired 4th grade teacher and still write and draw even after training teachers and students how to use the "new" Apple computers from 1986 to 2010.....hands on paper as well as computers for me.
I use graph paper all the time, actually have a large pad of it that I take everywhere and I found great sites to print different sizes & shapes. I would be lost without my graph paper!
Pit is the only way I can keep my quilts ( contained) without sketching out the size of my quilt they seem to grow & grow...( my daughter's wedding quilt is 14 feet long! Couldnt seem to keep it from growing....that's when I learned to start on graph paper) |
I use the paper sometimes but mostly I use the graph from incompetech.com
then draw my blocks in gimp. Less waste of paper and I can play with the blocks faster than I can drawn and paint on paper. |
I use it all the time to draw out ideas or blocks I have seen and like, then figure what measurements I want.
I love using graph paper. And I use my colored pencils, too!
I use it too. Haven't made room in the budget for EQ and "learning curve" is always mentioned; so will need to wait until I get through the " learning curve" of things I already have! Until then I will consider my time with my graph paper and colored pencils my participation in the slow stitch movement :)
I see that I still am in some very good company. Thank you for responding.
I still do. was just putting it in it's new place.

I use graph paper all the time. Love it.
Heavens NO!! I use it all the time for drawing up patterns to paper piece! You are not alone!
I can buy it in a pack of 100 just like lined paper, etc. |
Yes, I use it. I have a composition book with the graph paper in it. :) Great for doodling, and new designs.
used a quilt designing software program for a bit but found myself going back to the graph paper. just easier for me to design my quilts that way.
Sometimes when I don't want to actually quilt, I design on graph paper; I actually have about 13-14 full pads designs from 30 years of using graph paper, couldn't live without it! All my beginner classes start with using it; not everybody has or can afford the EQ series.

No, you aren't. I just recently adapted a quilt block to use in wearable art. I needed to make it smaller. I drew it on graph paper, one square = 1 inch so I had the sized for the strips (it was a log cabin variation) and added seam allowances. It worked great.
I do, no computer skills so it works for me
I use it. I am a beginner and don't have EQ7. I thought I should prove to myself that I can actually make a quilt before I invest. :) EQ7 may be a reward for myself when I attain some competency.
I could never give up graph paper even then though. It's so second nature to me (from art school). |
I use graph paper all the time. I have several tablets of it full of quilts I want to try, might try, may never try. I find it relaxing to just design them. I have worked out several to the point I probably could publish them, but don't know how to do it and protect my art, and I can't afford an attorney to help. If any of you might like to see some, let me know, and I will post some. My graph paper goes from 4 squares to the inch down to 10 squares to the inch.

I use it lots love it ,some thing about using my brain and figuring thing out the old fashioned way I like .
I tend to make my own graph paper as the pads they sell in shops A4 are too small and I can't find larger sheets. I have Eq7 but can't use it on my iPad waiting for the pennies for a laptop to load it on.
Graph paper remains handy in my sewing room. I have been "googling" EQ7 for information but I don't think I'm ready to make the plunge. I'm not sure I would put it to good use yet...I still have a lot of patterns that I've purchased still waiting in the wings.
Nope! I use it all the time as well.
I'd have to stop quilting if my graph paper were taken away from me. I print out the size I need on the computer. Lately I have been using the exact quarter-inch graph paper for freezer-paper piecing.
Nope, you are not. But I had to be reminded of it by my brother who is a builder. On a visit to his house I mentioned that I had been puzzling over how to design a baseball field quilt and he pulled out his graph paper pad. That was a 'duh moment'. I always want to find a pattern but end up making adjustments anyway.
I find it so helpful for designing and planning. I have an older version of EQ, but really don't have the time to learn it. Graph paper is right at my level of computer expertise!
I use it all the time, along with my colored pencils. :)
Graph paper - inexpensive, easily changed, no learning curve, portable
I don't know if you have graph paper grids for hexagons and kaleidoscopes and other patterns, but while I was researching what to do with all my GOOB sale templates, I found that Marti Michell has a ton of free grids on her page. (No affil, just enjoying my templates).
Go to her Tips and Tricks page here: https://frommarti.com/info_tips_tricks.shtml. Browse down to "Designing Your Quilt" and you'll see loads. |
