I'm visiting in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Ladies.....the quilting fabric here is about $21.00 per meter, which is only 3 inches more than a yard! That's the cheap fabric. The reproduction "Dutch prints" which are absolutely gorgeous are about $40-45.00 per meter! I honestly don't know how anyone here could afford to quilt. That's in US dollars, it's about 30 euros per meter or 13-15 euros per meter for the cheap fabric. Fat quarters are 7 euros which is about $10 for a fat quarter!! Be very, very grateful for our prices in the US. I can't wait to get home!

You are lucky in the US. Good for you.

lallyann 03-17-2011 10:48 AM

hmmm...I've always wondered how fabric prices compared in different countries. So just out of curiousity, were the fabrics simply beautiful?! I'm hoping you got to touch them and drool over them anyway ;)

KatFish 03-17-2011 10:48 AM

God bless the USA. Thankful to live in America. And thanks dolly for the reminder of how blessed we really are.

fabric lover 03-17-2011 11:30 AM

So I think you won't need an extra suitcase for all the fabrics you'll be purchasing??

How do those of you who live outside the US afford to quilt? Is your wages in line with fabric costs? Ours are for the most part except those of us who are on limited income of SS. The gov. hasn't seen fit to give us a raise for a couple years. They say there is no raise in the cost of living.LOL I don't know what rock they are living under.

CarrieAnne 03-17-2011 12:27 PM

Yikes, that is so high!

I know...I live near Amsterdam. Poor me ;)

Borntohandquilt 03-17-2011 12:28 PM

Well, yes, you can be very grateful! We here in Germany also have to pay between 14 and 16 Euros per meter (I think this is about 18 to 30$) for a good quality fabric, it's almost no difference to our neigbours in the Netherlands. Fortunately we can purchase brands like Kaufman, Hoffman, Moda, RJR etc.
I have collected a stash which is big enough for the next 20 years...I don't have to buy so much at the moment.

goldsberry921 03-17-2011 12:30 PM

Ouch that hurts my checkbook and paralyzes my husband's checkbook!!!

Borntohandquilt 03-17-2011 12:37 PM

We Europeans are accustomed to the prices...

emerald46 03-17-2011 12:44 PM

I'd be looking for a penpal to ship from the U.S.

Jennifer22206 03-17-2011 01:02 PM

I couldn't afford to quilt at those prices.

chickadee_42us 03-17-2011 01:12 PM

I couldn't afford it either but then, pay MIGHT be better - might!!!

mygirl66 03-17-2011 01:38 PM

Wow! And I thought our fabric prices were high! I will never complain again.

Amen & Amen!!! We do live in a God Blessed country.

Everyone in Europe and Canada, please remember that there are several of your sisters/brothers here on this Board living in the US who are happy to help out shipping fabric to you. Even with shipping charges it is TONS cheaper than what you are paying in your home country.

Lynnie25 03-17-2011 01:53 PM

Most fabrics in Australia start from $20 per metre up to $26 per metre. Getting a nice fabric for backing without paying that much money is almost impossible. You have to buy up when there is a sale and it goes down to around $10 per metre.

susanwilley 03-17-2011 01:59 PM

Yes! GOD BLESS AMERICAN!!

Most of us simply do not quilt anywhere near as much as you do in the USA, we think carefully before we make anything.. that doesn't mean that we don't have a stash but it will be in fat quarters or possibly half metres, I don't know anyone who could buy the bolt as a lot of you do. Though probably the professionals do, because of the cost of fabric not so many quilts are sold as the cost would be prohibitive, The other alternative is for us to buy from you over there, which I have done,, even with shipping it is about half the price it is over here. Doesn't stop us quilting but we just get more inventive.

patimint 03-17-2011 05:43 PM

We in America truely are blessed. We moan and groan about the high prices we have to pay for almost everything. If I had to pay 20 or 25 or even more for a yard (meter)for fabric, I could not afford to quilt for pleasure and fun like I do now. I would have to do it for a business and I am not that good yet.

Sallyflymi 03-18-2011 03:03 AM

Probably won't be long before they raise our prices that high. They are in the process of doing that now. To bad they don't raise the wages to go along with it.

Homemother 03-18-2011 04:12 AM

I found that everything in Europe was more expensive than here in the states. They don't understand free enterprise like we do and don't have the competition that we have. Our friends in Europe like our prices here but then turn around and tell us how we do everything wrong. Bleh! We here in the US are truly unique and we should be proud of our society! (Maybe they import from the US and have surcharges added to everything!)

keesha_ont 03-18-2011 04:16 AM

I was in Amsterdam 2 years ago visiting relatives and bought, yes bought, some of their fabrics. I think I got several yards which translated into over $100 Canadian. However, in Canada the very nice fabrics are close to $20 a meter (just a bit over a yard). Love online shopping and am amazed that I can order fabric for a queen size quilt for about $70.00.

QultingaddictUK 03-18-2011 04:41 AM

I live in the UK and get 99.9% of my fabrics from the US because I couldn't afford to quilt if I bought my fabric here. The prices range from £8/$13 upwards

I can get a wonderful range of fabrics from the US, 6 yards cost me $28/£17 including postage = $4.65/£2.85 per yard. Even my threads are heaps cheaper, even with the postage from the US.

Yes Ladies over the pond you are really lucky

charity-crafter 03-18-2011 04:48 AM

There is a lady in my area who was downsizing her fabric stash and put out the word to all the local quilters she was selling for $3/yd. She had several large storage units.

When I went to stock up, there was a lady from Australia who was just in hog heaven. She borrowed a large empty suitcase from her friend she was visiting and proceeded to buy over 100 yards of fabric. And was trying to figure out how to buy more and ship it to herself.

She said fabric is over $20/m. She was one happy person.

rb. 03-18-2011 05:08 AM

Not just fabric, but batting, too. I had a thread a week or two about a flyer from our eqivalent of Joann's. A queen batt was on sale for about $30?, regular price was $70, IIRC, per the flyer. I buy it by the case From the US at $13-14 each, including shipping.

LindaJR 03-18-2011 05:10 AM

When we used to go to Bermuda every year I always took cheese, big blocks of it to our friends, as it was so expensive there. Now, I guess if I go to other countries I should take a suitcase full of fabric for quilters there, even Canada. Unfortunately I do not travel to other countries, since I am still trying to see all of the U S. I also have not applied for a passport. Last time I left the U S all you needed was a drivers license and a birth certificate.

i agree

Kutnso 03-18-2011 06:45 AM

Our fabrics cost much less but I really don't consider $10 or more a yard "cheap". Plus, if we send fabrics to friends they have to pay very high postal duty on them. Not fair, right???
Appreciate our prices ladies, Kutnso

What is sad is that even the employers are not giving raises... I guess they agree with the govt. - no raise in cost of living.....

My sympathies to those paying more for fabrics.
