I just read the thread about JoAnn's and the "poly-fil" not being batting. I have got a story that will top that one.
I am short, on the heavy side, and 100% gray hair with glasses. I went to JoAnn's looking for a specific item, since JoAnn's was re-arranging the store I had no clue where to find my item. A very sweet YOUNG clerk ( I know my underwear was older than this child!)comes up to me: Ma'am, may I help you? Yes, please. I am looking for a dressmaker's ham. Caught this clerk way off in left field. Face was totally blank. Then suddenly, I see a 25watt light bulb over the child's head, and the strangest look of pity on her face. She leans towards me, puts a sympathetic hand upon my shoulder and says, "Oh hon, I'm so sorry, but you are not in the grocery store." Not missing a beat my reply was, "DAMN IT! I wondered why the fresh vegatables weren't off to my right!" I promptly left the store but could not make it to my car before I busted a gut laughing! Another lady walked up to me, she had witnessed this spectacle, patted me on the shoulder and said, "GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZ THAT WAS SO GOOD! WELL WORTH THE TRIP TODAY!" They walk among us. |
OHHHH Such ignoran...........Uhhhh Innocence!!!!!!
   Excellent comeback
That is so funny, and you are right, they do walk among us
Did you ever find your "Ham"? |
OH MY GOSH, good one!!! You never know what will happen when you go there. Last time I went there they had a big clearance sale and I bought over 30 yards. The girl was slamming the bolts around very miffed she had to cut all those yards. Not one was under 2 yards. I know she was cutting for a while non stop, but her attitude was horrible. She proceeded to tell me how horrible it was to do that all day. Told her she could go on my unemployment and I would cut her fabric with a smile and thank people for comming. Whats up with rudness today???
That was a good one. I am sitting here laughing my head off thinking about the vegetables in the sewing store.
lol that was soo funny
that's funny. I don't know what a dressmaker's ham is either, but I know it isn't one from the grocery store. I like your quick reaction.
When I was at the store the other day a young (high school age) girl asked if I wanted to use my savers card and I said yes because I really need the savings I get on gas. (our grocery store gives u so many cents off gas for each certain mark u spend on food) and she smiled and said "ya thats what all the old people say". I AM 29!!!!!! I just smiled and nodded and walked away. She was totally oblivious. Some peoples kids. My DH and Mom thought it was hilarious though...so did I after the fact LOL.
I laughed so much I peeed my pants, now could you direct me to where they keep the depends.
lol trupeach, get a package for me too.
That was the best comeback i ever heard and it didn't hurt anyone. You are one quick cookie on your feet, crashnquilt. Wonder if the clerk ever figured out what it was? |
No you started out right.... ignorance. It amazes me that most people that work in Fabric stores don't know which end of the needle to thread.
LOL, I'm not yet 50 and I know what a Ham is!!!
A dressmakers ham looks like a ham but is filled with sawdust and covered with two different types of fabric so it can be used with satins and velvets.
Another name for it is Pressing Ham because you use it for pressing curves in garments. Hope this helps. |
LOL.   I think her light bulb is still a bit dim. :D :D :D

That is so funny!!! I am 44 and have know what a dress makers ham was since jr. high school. :D

Oh my gosh, I think that is the funniest thing I ever heard. And it is so true, those young'ens don't have a clue. Marge, still laughing
The word 'dressmaker' should have given the poor girl a little clue. I don't know what one is either, but geez louise. Great comeback!
I saw a bumper sticker recently... 'stupid should hurt' ! |
Great comeback!!! My daughter and husband would have come out with something like that, I usually can't come up with anything quickly.
lmao
I have several size hams I found at thrift stores. I don't use them very much but when I do need them they are great to have.

Oh my goodness. What a laugh. I'm doing it quietly since i'm at work!!
what a hoot! my hubby was in Lowe's or Home Depot and asked some clerk there where the natural sponges were and she said "they don't make those anymore" !. sure hon.  and yes, I know what a dressmakers ham is. i have one too! |
THAT IS HILARIOUS!
Good job with the snappy comeback. We've always called it a tailors ham. |
I thought about this long and hard and if it was me I would go back and approch the same girl since you asked from dressmakes ham I would now ask where the quilters balogna is.
I wonder if she could have directed you to the jelly rolls or layer cakes?
LOL..I loved the story and am SOOO glad someone explained what it is...I'm a ummm mature 50ish person who does NOT sew...just struggles in this wonderful quilting world we live in!

Well, I can kind of understand the young clerk now knowing what a "dressmaker's ham" was -
Not many people that I know use them or have them :? (I think I have four, by the way - two in a drawer and two on me) |
   I do love that one. But you know unless you do sew actually you don't know what it is. Then on the other hand if you work in a shop like Joann's maybe you should know. LOL!!!!! Thank you for sharing.

I have to teach my younger students what a ham is and how to use them. Hopefully they will tell some one that not all hams are in a grocery store. |
OMG! Thanks for the laugh! Still wiping tears..... :)
Oh gosh that's funny!
