Great grandma's quilt

1 Attachment(s)
I hope this works - first time sending a picture. Whew! Sorry about starting a new thread but forgot where I was on the board.

Here is the picture of the quilt blocks my Great Grandmother made back in the 1930ish. I just finished sewing half of it together. When its done it will be about 50 x 64. There is an assortment of colors so had to improvise a design. The 3 gray blocks on the left will be in the center when I get it done. These blocks have been in a shoe box for over 50 years at my aunts house and she finally sent them to me. Guess I'm the only one in the family that has an appreciation of family quilts. I would have rather hand sewed them but since I have never done that, I thought she would forgive me - at least it looks like a quilt now. I have to tell you that every single star point and seam lined up perfectly with the others and it was all done by hand. Doubt if they had rotary cutters back then. I'm so honored to be able to complete this quilt for her. I hope she is smiling down on me. It sure felt like her hands were guiding me through this project.

What a treasure you have. So glad you have it and really appreciate the work that was put in it. Wonderful save!

sarahrachel 12-21-2011 06:16 PM

it looks wonderful! and isn't it amazing the accuracy they had without all our new fangled things and we still can't be accurate?? I also have a quilt top of my great grandmother's and am determined to work on it next year and maybe finish it

Bobbielinks 12-21-2011 06:21 PM

How wonderful!!! Just yesterday my cousin in Georgia sent me a quilt top that our Granny had pieced (she passed away in 1975). I was thrilled when I opened the box as I had no idea what he had sent. It is the same pattern as yours, pieced with some cottons, some percale and some ticking. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.

You've done a great job and how wonderful to have a quilt full of memories from your great grandmother. Lucky you!

Snoflak 12-21-2011 06:26 PM

Beautiful!

Gladys 12-21-2011 06:41 PM

You did a great job and I bet she's smiling down on you from above.

Jingle 12-21-2011 06:50 PM

Beautiful, you did a great job on this. Your GGM would be so proud to know someone thought it worthy of being made.

breezyquilts 12-21-2011 07:24 PM

That is awesome and the blocks are lovely. How wonderful to work on a quilt that your great grandmother worked on, that is so special.

Lori S 12-21-2011 08:20 PM

Quilts are even more special when more than one generation has contributed. What a great family heritage you have continued. Will you put her name and your name on the back?

Daffy Daphne 12-21-2011 10:49 PM

What a treasure! Good for you, putting it together.

Rose L 12-21-2011 11:41 PM

It's a wonderful quilt. I'm sure your GG would be very pleased. It's a wonderful tribute to her.

Merivale 12-22-2011 12:45 AM

What a joy to share with your Granny, with every stitch she is with you.

katydidkg 12-22-2011 03:16 AM

This is a true treasure, what a beautiful quilt ! I was given my great grandmother's quilt in the 1970's. The odd thing about it was I never heard my mother say that grgrandma was a quilter.

Quiltshaker 12-22-2011 04:35 AM

A wonderful gift and your layout is so pretty. Can't wait to see the entire top. Beautiful.

thepolyparrot 12-22-2011 06:31 AM

Ohmigosh, what a treasure! And Lemoyne Stars - Lord have mercy! Those are so tricky - she really had a good eye, didn't she? :) I know you must be over the moon to have this gift and I hope you enjoy it for many, many years.

I think I would use a layer or two of pre-shrunk flannel for the batting instead of the usual batt - a woven would support the aging fabric and make your whole quilt stronger.

MrsM 12-22-2011 06:49 AM

Wow this is going to ba a beautiful quilt. It looks great right now. Enjoy!

valleyquiltermo 12-22-2011 06:54 AM

I have some blocks of Grannys and been thinking of putting them together for her.

gramarraine 12-22-2011 07:06 AM

Love the way it is coming together for you. You are so lucky to have the opportunity to finish it for her. She will love you for it.

Treasureit 12-22-2011 07:07 AM

That is great! We quilt lovers are a special breed! Appreciators of the old and creators of the new. Nice that you finished that quilt.

I agree and as Sarahrachel said it is amazing how accurate quilters were in the day without all the gadgets. You have a beautiful Christmas present from your great grandmother.

LindaDeeter 12-22-2011 07:22 AM

That is totally awesome!! I bet your Great Grandmother is doing a little happy dance in heaven!! How blessed you are to have this treasure in your possession!

jaciqltznok 12-22-2011 07:25 AM

awesome...make sure the label documents the history well!

fmhall2 12-22-2011 08:53 AM

You have a real treasure. Shortly before my mother died in 1959, she gave me a package of dresden plate quilt blocks (all but 3 were finished) and she said she had started them while she was carrying me in 1934. In the middle 70's I had a friend who said she quilted, so I showed them to her and she said she would finish them for me. She finished them fine, but instead of quilting it, she tied it with yarn, so there are big holes which make it impossible for me to take out and quilt myself. If only I had known I would be a quilter some day. I started in 1989, I could have done it myself. O well! I still treasure the quilt. Another think back then I thought I was doing good by sending it to the cleaners instead of washing it myself - don't do that!!

Definitely. I'm going to put her name on it with a notation that she did the hand sewing blocks, the year each was done. (Her's will be approximate of course).

As Kentucky author Jesse Stuart wrote in his book, "The threads that runs so true...." this quilt is what binds family. A very special quilt to be cherished and will be a treasure available for generations to come. You and your family are very lucky.

Canada Kate 12-23-2011 05:26 AM

This is gorgeous and the story of your great-grandmother warms my heart.

imdelagarza62 12-23-2011 05:29 AM

How very special.

KR 12-23-2011 05:29 AM

Ahhhh, LeMoyne Stars....my favorite! Your Great Grandma did a great job and would be so tickled that you care enough to finish what she began so long ago. Thanks for sharing and be sure to post a photo of your finished quilt!

Teacup 12-23-2011 05:36 AM

What a wonderful job you are doing! There's nothing like saving some family history and feeling that connection.

joysewer 12-23-2011 05:39 AM

Beautiful!!! How fortunate you are to have such a treasure!!!

Pieces2 12-23-2011 06:02 AM

A great pattern/fabric, glad you were chosen to finish this quilt.

cheaha39 12-23-2011 06:17 AM

Yes, she is smiling down at your accomplishment. I have several tops that I am leaving for my great-grandaughts to finish ;-}

jetmaio 12-23-2011 06:20 AM

I wish I had something left to me like that. All I got from my Grandmother was a rolling pin.

MarthaT 12-23-2011 06:47 AM

That is wonderful that you could finish it. Well made quilt! Glad someone is doing it that can finish it with the same quality the block maker used. Will it be finished with hand quilting?

Sadheart 12-23-2011 07:19 AM

How wonderful. Beautiful stars. Something to treasure always.

117becca 12-23-2011 07:33 AM

You go!!! I also made a quilt out of pieces that my grandmother cut out. I never knew the woman, and my mom was only 7 when Gma passed away. I consider it a true honor to have finished this project that she started. My mom is now blessed w/ the quilt and what an honor she must feel knowing her mother cut the pieces out and her daughter created something out of it.

Document the history so that down the road someone will know!!

Kim Bohannon 12-23-2011 07:40 AM

amazing! what a treasure and what an honor for you to be able to finish this fine quilt

Nanaquilts44 12-23-2011 08:22 AM

How wonderful. I love it.

cherylmae 12-23-2011 08:27 AM
