After being off work for 14+ months, husband is finally approved for disability ! I was so scared I already filed our taxes, so I could hurry and get them back. SS even called to verify. Thank you Jesus

Great news!! I know from experience how difficult the task of getting it approved!!

pjaco 01-21-2011 10:20 AM

suebee 01-21-2011 10:27 AM

That is great news. We went through the same ordeal a few years ago. It is terrible that we have to suffer through their ridiculous process. God bless you and your family. Happy times are here again!!!

Raggiemom 01-21-2011 10:29 AM

That's great. I'm glad it worked out for you.

I am so glad for you. That process took me almost 3 years. I'm so happy for you both.

sewwhat85 01-21-2011 10:46 AM

hope things get better for you all

pjaco 01-21-2011 10:50 AM

Thanks Nancy. Thanks everyone. After being married almost (next week) 34 years and my husband at his job..with benefits for 27 years. I was really spoiled with the benefits..you get used to that. I'm so stupid, I had no idea that prescriptions prices vary so much. What a rip off!!! I have no idea why I don't remember that stuff with my parents. Just didn't pay attention, I guess. Duh

DebbyT 01-21-2011 11:06 AM

I felt your relief 2 years ago. The process took my husband almost 4 years. Courts were backed up 30,000+ cases. Judges from other states were used for the overflow. When he got hurt I was planning my retirement. I had to wait an extra year+ and work as much overtime that I could get. It was a very tough 4 years. Got real burned out. When it finally came through it was hard to feel it was for real. I don't recall a confirmation call. Waited until the 1st check was received and cleared at the bank. He also got a Workman's Comp settlement, which took even longer. --- We are both enjoying our retirement. Now it is time to enjoy his retirement. Hope you have plans to celebrate.

crashnquilt 01-21-2011 11:16 AM

Congrats! It took me 2 years for my disability. My lawsuit is still "pending" after 4 friggin years! The courts awarded a very nice settlement, BUT, what they don't tell you is the company has right of appeal. Once the appeals run out, the company can ask for ANOTHER hearing which, you guessed it, gives the company MORE appeals! No wonder the court system is so choked up!

Gee, when I was injured I didn't get to appeal my injuries! I didn't get to appeal all of the surgeries! I didn't to appeal my termination! So, why does the company get to appeal their responsibility?

pjaco 01-21-2011 11:30 AM

It has been a nightmare. We still can't beleive it. We couldn't beleive it when the Dr took him off work. That disability company UNUM sucks, I hate them. Why do we have to beg, cry and call over & over. Do they really think a man would do that. what would men do without their wives?

Mary M 01-21-2011 11:43 AM

It is sad that those who truly injured and can't work have to wait so long. It is because so many people have abused the system of S.S. that it now hurts the good and honest person. Sure makes a person stop and think to always put something into savings for the rough times.

tjradj 01-21-2011 11:52 AM

I am so glad I asked my accountant to wade through my paperwork recently when my employer terminated my position after being on LTD for 5 years. It was a nightmare, and if I had to go it alone, I think I'd have had a stroke! Why do they have to make it so difficult?
Glad it worked out for your hubby, finally.

moonwork42029 01-21-2011 12:30 PM

Glad to see it finally worked out.

My husband went through the same problems. When the lawsuit was settled (Arizona), social security then took away part of his benefits each month until the money he received from Arizona lawsuit was paid back to social security. This happened in 1981. Not knowing what the current laws are, back then Reagan passed a law that any lawsuit compensation arriving from injury must be deducted from any social security payments. To me, it was wrong! Hope this does not happen to you. Nobody, even the lawyers, told us until we got the letter from social security about 3 months later.

CarrieAnne 01-21-2011 02:59 PM

I am so happy for you!

Quiltforme 01-21-2011 04:27 PM

I am so glad your was settled for you it is a stress relief. Mine was a miracle to have been done in 60days. I had to go through some pretty intensive testing to prove my disease in the end it was worth it.

LivelyLady 01-21-2011 05:17 PM

scowlkat 01-21-2011 05:44 PM

Praise God! So happy for you!

PJisChaos 01-21-2011 05:49 PM

That is great news!! I had to fight them for 4 years and apply 3 times to finally get approved for disability. All because I am "too young". grrr!! So glad things are looking up for you and your family.

Jim 01-21-2011 07:06 PM

Glad DH's finally came thru...I retired at 40 from a strep germ that destroyed the veins in my legs...I was off only 10 months when I was accepted ...I can't imagine the horrors of waiting 4 yrs...Thank God he has been accepted finally.

quilterj 01-21-2011 07:06 PM

Congradulations.

stpatmom 01-21-2011 07:10 PM

marknfran you are so right about what SS. does. They do
do this and they also do that if a spouse is still working
and they make over what SS. thinks is allowed, they will
take it out of your SS payment until it is payed back also.
Witch means the spouse can't afford to work period.. :(

Back in 1986 we had a child born with a majority of his small intestines dead and had to have over 1/2 them removed and he ended up with a condition called Short Gut Syndrome. By the time he was 1 year old, he had ended up having 8 surgeries. He was confined to NICU for his first 4 months of his life, he came home connected to his TPN machine. He was on TPN (Total parenteral nutrition)for the first 10 months of his life. The doctors at the time told us he may never get off TPN and be able to eat foods. Only time would tell. So they had us sign him up for SSD..and he was denied...because he was gaining weight. They said stop the TPN and he would get it. He would have died had we done that, as he was eating predigested formula mixed at 1/4 strength. Then it was only 1 oz every 3 hours. Everyone knows a 6 month old eats more than that in a day. We were young and just gave up.

pjaco 01-22-2011 04:37 AM

I understand. They all want us to "give up". Don't you think? It sucks having to beg for insurance coverage. Is your son OK now??

Yup!!! One day at a time!!! My husband was only retired a year or two when he discovered the lung cancer. We had planned to do some traveling after I stopped working. But that all changed in a big hurry. After lung surgery he couldn't hike or take long walks because of shortness of breath etc. Then it attacked his esophagus, so he couldn't swallow, no dinners out. You just have to go along as best you can, and make lemonade out of those lemons dropped at your door.

pjaco 01-22-2011 05:26 AM

Bless you

It doesn't seem fair to have to go through further hardships caused by stress. I wonder if they catch all the ones who are really trying to "beat and cheat the system" while those who really are disabled are in such dire straits.

Just wonderful news!

TanyaLynn 01-22-2011 06:55 AM

It took us so long to get my dh disability payments paperwork straighten out after it was approved and payments started - they approved the wrong amount of payments, then wanted to eliminate payments until the overage was paid back and said we should have know how much we were entitled to and have corrected SS's mistake. I remember all the inept people we dealt with and the delays and their bad attitudes, that now I seriously doubt anyone is trying to beat and cheat the system. If I wanted to run a con game it wouldn't be for the peanuts that disability pays! I remember our paperwork being assigned to one worker that answered every question with "I gets to it when I gets to it. Ever time I gets called I puts that paper on the bottom of my pile."

pjaco 01-22-2011 07:04 AM

The lawyer told me about that and to watch out cause they always catch up. If your not disabled, you will be after going through all the bs and red tape. We used almost all of our IRA 's just to live !!!! ARG !!

It is very hard to get approved for disability. It took me 2 years. That was after having back surgery 5 times. The last one was not successful.

Joan Gaddis 01-22-2011 07:37 AM

God bless!!!!!! i know you are happy~

My daughter went through this, too. It took over 3 years. What a relief for you.
