the great quilt makeover!

The queen bedspread in my guest room was wearing out (just fabric front and batting back), so I decided it was time for a "makeover"... I pin-basted a solid floral to the batting side, then started log-cabin style sewing 8 inch wide strips to the "front". I just sewed each seam right through all the layers so the floral side would look quilted when I was done, and kept adding strips until I got to near the edges. Then I folded the floral to the scrappy side for binding. A fun three days while keeping my other eye (and ears) on the grandkids playing in the next room!

Aren't you a smarty, it looks great too.

Pat625 07-13-2012 12:24 PM

A save! I would never have thought of that! And with the price of batting, if you use your stash it's a free project!!

erstan947 07-13-2012 12:32 PM

This is a great "SAVE". Beautifully done and either side is great. I think the floral for Spring/Summer and the patches Fall/Winter. Love your idea!

What a great idea!! Great job!!

piepatch 07-14-2012 03:17 AM

What a great idea! You made a pretty "double" quilt, and you recycled at the same time! nice job.

janegb 07-14-2012 03:22 AM

Glad you mentioned this, I've got a quilt thats becoming rather tattered and worn out, and was thinking about doing a remake of it. Have lots of stash, and the backing is still in good condition.

joyce j 07-14-2012 04:03 AM

love that quilt. never thought to make a log cabin that big. Now I will have to make one like that. Thanks. joyce j

Way to re-do and re-use. Love it. It's homey and cheery.

I love it. I am very glad you posted . I never would have thought of this. You are one smart lady.

justme CA 07-14-2012 08:41 AM

You are a most creative person and your solution is beautiful, you now have a new quilt.

Helen S 07-14-2012 08:55 AM

GREAT idea! We have a king size lightweight down comforter that is beginning to show it's 12 years of wear. It's all white. We both love it, so hate to part with it and they are cost-prohibitive, so need to do something with it, and have always hated how the sides were too short to reach the bed skirt, so this would be a great idea to make it what I always wanted it to be! lol Thanks for posting!

Patti25314 07-14-2012 09:34 AM

OK. I'm confused! How did you get the quilting lines on the back to all be vertical while sewing log cabin on the front? I would think you'd have a log cabin kinda look on the back, too.

MacThayer 07-14-2012 09:45 AM

What a positively brilliant idea! Not only are you saving instead of throwing out a perfectly good batting, but you are using up stash, using your creativity, and creating a brand new, double sided quilt! Brilliant! I have exactly the quilt that needs that "assistance". It's in great shape, but the surface is worn in places, and stained. I can just cover it up, and do it in the evenings when I like to sit with some handwork and listen to music or books on tape (I rarely watch TV.), and for me it can take as long as I want, since the quilt is not currently in use. Thank you so much for your most wonderful creative idea!

grandme26 07-14-2012 11:34 AM

Beautiful!! A great idea!!!

i love what you did to save your quilt. love it.

Jingle 07-14-2012 05:26 PM

A very creative idea. I don't have any quilts that are worn but, you idea is a great one. I love the blue floral, looks like silk. Both sides are beautiful.

barny 07-14-2012 05:29 PM

So now you have 2 new quilts. If you get tired looking at one side, turn it over. Very nice.

Latrinka 07-15-2012 05:41 AM

Looks great!

dahlshouse 07-15-2012 06:35 AM

This is such a great idea - THANKS FOR POSTING IT! Great way to purge those larger scrap pieces and smaller yardage pieces from the stash, it cost nothing, and something BIG that's finished just feels terrific!

Love it! Once i covered a quilt top where the top fabric was worn, but backing and batting were good.I used leftover bits of velveteen, corduroy, etc to make crazy quilt squares and just sewed them down. I think it is still in good shape somewhere in my boxes,LOL.
