I have just bound a quilt, 6' x 6.6" using just one pillowcase

I un-stitched it, opened and pressed and got 14, yep 14, yards of binding from just one.

I thought what a marvelous use of all those odd ones tucked in your linen cupboards for binding scrappy and other odd projects

Holice 07-07-2011 01:53 PM

I bet you could rip the pillow case apart and resew it to make cointinuous binding.

lscho4jm 07-07-2011 01:53 PM

Great idea! I have dozens upon dozens of mismatched pillow cases in the linen closet. They will promptly be moved to the sewing room.

I use mine to store my quilts in. But this is a another good use.

patchsamkim 07-07-2011 02:04 PM

I have also use pillowcases to store quilts...much better than storing quilts in plastic bags....this is a great idea though to use for binding...will have to go through my spare ones and see if any could be used for that.

I love that idea !! But if you have some that would not work for binding ( color or pattern) you can always make dresses

I bought a couple pair of Ralph Lauren pillow cases at a yard sale. They had beautiful damask type weaving on very soft cotton. A binding would be a great use of the off white one especially.

Charity shops always has masses of them too, for pennies most of the time.

Funny you should say this. I just cut up an old pillow case and used it for backing and binding some mug rugs. I even used an old, good quality sheet as a backing for a lap quilt. Because the quality was so good to begin with, it turned out nice.

mimee4 07-08-2011 06:20 AM

Terrific idea!! Thanks.

What about stringing a cord in the hem to make a dirty clothes duffle bag for college kids. I think I'm going to try this for my granddaughter. They could even have several so they could sort their clothes as they go. It could be hung somewhere with the cord.

purrfectquilts 07-08-2011 07:02 AM
