Am I the only person who finds the new cellophane packaging on purchased items (like DVD's) a pain to open?! The other day I was having a fight with the new DVD and it was winning. I looked up and lo and behold on my counter, ready to be thrown away, was a seam ripper I did not like. To make a long story short, the seam ripper worked like a dream and has found a new home instead of being discarded. :-D

Used one this morning to open an old package of quilting binding! Thx for the tip!

Stitchnripper 06-12-2011 08:21 AM

Great tip! I saw on a news show that packaging may be changed to smaller, less, etc. because of costs to produce and ship.

What's worse is the ties that hold items in place in packages. Every try to get a toy out of the ties holding it in place in the package? Before I give a toy I clip the ties first. I've seen many a child not be able to take the toy and play with it because it took an adult forever to get the stupid ties off if they could find scissors, or use a knife which is an accident ready to happen. A good seam ripper works great to break the ties.

no1jan 06-12-2011 08:53 AM

I've done that or used the edge of my scissors. Also great envelope openers.

Thanks for sharing.

Great idea! I find them hard to open as companies are trying to make it difficult to avoid theft.

MelodyWB 06-12-2011 09:01 AM

I keep one in the kitchen to remove labels on cans that have the Boxtops for Education. Just stash it in the container (recycled candle jar) that I keep the coupons in until I remember to get them to church or school.

Great idea ... and I'm really an expert with my seam ripper since I've had enough experience with it :-P

Also nice for cutting articles or recipes from magazines, and cutting off UPCs for refund offers.

Don't let my family know this or I will never be able to find that seam ripper when I need it.

jeanneb52 06-13-2011 02:40 AM

EUREKA! Brilliant. Thanks

ncredbird 06-13-2011 03:43 AM

I cleaned out my sewing box and found that I had 6 seam rippers that I had acquired over the years. DH and I now have one each in our desk drawers for this purpose as well as for opening letters and those postal envelopes that they use the industrial adhesive on.

And, not only are you clever, you're recycling! Bravo! Debbie
P.S. That's the only kind of cycling I do nowadays. : )

auntiehenno 06-13-2011 04:19 AM

How about items in the really, truly hard to open hard plastic packaging?

charlotte625 06-13-2011 04:21 AM

yes those nlittle tools are so handy..gave one to Dh for tool box..and he gave me...a magnet that extents to pick up pins or other metal objects......

MissJMac 06-13-2011 04:48 AM

You are not the only one. Years ago when Beta and VCR recorders were all the rage, I kept a seam ripper near the machine to tear the cellophane off the tapes, then I used them to open delivery packages that were taped with the tape that had the "string" added to secure pacages in transit. Now I use them for everything - they're all over the house. I'd never throw them away LOL
They're great in the kitchen too, opening meat packaging (Hot Dogs, Bacon, etc. -Possibilities are endless.

pollyjvan9 06-13-2011 04:58 AM

Great tip, I have at least 4 in a bottom drawer. I am definitely going to take one to the kitchen.

lillybeck 06-13-2011 05:02 AM
