How about holding your meeting in your local library? We hold ours there every Monday evening...free and fun. Why belong to a group that isn't fun? I'm at the stage of my life where if it isn't enjoyable I don't do it.

We used to meet in a firehouse meeting room once a month. We used it free and once a year we made a tied quilt for the firemen to raffle as a fund raiser. Could be an option for you to use in negotiating a space.

and when a group is just starting, FREE is the best you can do.

THe churches want $150 for a 3 hour day!

We sew every Wednesday or Thursday at our local firehouse. It's free we just give a donation every month to cover electric etc. We each pay $5.00 a week to sew, that covers donation to firemen, ironing boards, irons, cutting mats, rulers etc. I love it.

is this the Dallas guild that has the big show in March
That must be one amazing guild..that show is one of the best and I go every year...yes, it is a 6 hour drive, so I spend the weekend...it is that good![/quote]

It is the same guild. Hopefully it will be a good experience & more folks who are not retired and/or housewives who don't leave the house. (Sorry, but I can't be a part of one that has meetings every Monday from 10 am to 2 pm; I have a job...)

I won't go to a quild meeting anymore. I tried to join at one time. I sat thru that whole meeting and not one person in there even acknowledged I was even there. One lady near me I tried to talk to but she was rude only thing she did tell me was about the food and that was the extent of her friendliness. Now its not safe to be out at night, and there are no day meetings. So I will never belong as much as I would like to. I have a friend that has the best guild, and she is the reason I tried to join, figured all quilters were like her guild. WRONG.

Since I'm just beginning to quilt again, I don't belong to any guild.......but I am taking classes from our local quilt shop. Maybe they will talk about some or when I become comfortable, I'll inquire!

Do you have a Senior Center near by? I think they're always looking for new activities. I started a sewing group a couple of years ago and it was VERY successful!!

Oh gosh. I read all the posts here and I can empathize but I so love my guilds. Have to keep myself from joining more. I get involved, join the bees, go to retreats, etc. The more you know , the funner it is. Hope you all have one close you might try again. WE switch out board members every year and you can't serve mroe than two. Gives us new leadership and variety. And the bigger guilds can pay to have some wonderful people do classes. Jackie I wish you lived closer. YOu seem to be someone who would really be an asset to a guild.
