Had to improvise

my quilting area. Had trouble with this latest quilt using my usual L shape setup. So rearranged some things and came up with this. So far seems to be working great. This is not the first queen quilt I have done on this DSM, but for some reason had issues with this one. Am still going to get a extension table for it. Being a retired widow on a fixed income one has to do with what one has. :D

Looks like you have the whole quilt supported and that works best. As long as the cat doesn't decide to jump up on his favourite spot, you should be good.:D

FURBALLS 02-10-2015 11:13 AM

I have him pretty well trained so if he heads for the quilt I tell him NO and he will stay off. At least while I am looking.;)

Crqltr 02-10-2015 11:21 AM

My sewing room is cobbled together...works for me! I don't think my machine would sew any straighter in a expensive cabinet!

Prism99 02-10-2015 12:15 PM

Have you considered suspending the quilt? It would take less space and actually works better than spreading it out. I will provide a link to a commercial system (Jenoop quilt suspenders) you can purchase, but several people have built their own for about $30 out of PVC:

Looks good to me, I'm in UK and my problem is space, I have a small sewing room, a gal has to do what a gal has to do

Stitchnripper 02-10-2015 01:49 PM

Looks like a good set up. Love the furry assistant!!

Jingle 02-10-2015 02:18 PM

It doesn't matter what you use, if it works for you. Some can afford nice cabinets and tables, some can't.

ManiacQuilter2 02-10-2015 02:49 PM

I like your setup. It is very similar to what I have. It makes quilting so easy. I adore your assistant. Wish I had one but the apartment management would be very unhappy.

bee3 02-10-2015 03:13 PM

what is that long metal looking pole to the right of sewing machine, it looks like its attached to the thread ? and feeding into the machine ?

tessagin 02-10-2015 03:22 PM

very similar to what I do. My ironing board is always up and ready to go. Helps when that extra support is needed!

That is one of those thread holders. It has a metal base. I use cones and the thread from CT. Also seems to make the tension feed better, at least to me, from the spool to the machine.

bee3 02-10-2015 03:26 PM

neat, i didn't know they even made those. Looks like a perfect room for a cat, good views, lots of light and quilts!

bee3 02-10-2015 03:28 PM

and all those steps up to the window !

mike'sgirl 02-10-2015 03:31 PM

Love the quilt your workimg on. Looks like your getting it done. You quilt inspector has an identical twin cousin down here in florida named Spanky. :)

Dina 02-10-2015 05:11 PM

It looks like you have a good set up all figured out. Good thinking. I love your quilt inspector, and he sure sounds better trained than mine. :)

Dina

Thank you Prism99 for the website. I have been wanting to make one - but this looks to be all inclusive instead of trying to put things together that I am not sure about.

I like how Furballs had to rearrange, I too have tried various ways and now decided to break down and just order it.

nanacc 02-10-2015 08:41 PM

I like your setup. Somewhat like mine, but much more room to spread out. I can also see that you like Willow Bend Creations. Your wall hangings are great! I did the bear from them for my grandson.

cathyvv 02-10-2015 09:26 PM

Looks like you're doing very well with what you have!

Did you upholster your chair? I like it!

coopah 02-11-2015 04:54 AM

Looks great to me. I am space challenged in this house. You have a custom chair cover and a lovely furry assistant. Who could ask for anything more?

twinkie 02-11-2015 05:01 AM

Looks good to me.

Linda1 02-11-2015 05:37 AM

I like your setup. I use the thread stands at all my machines including the embroidery machines. It feeds better for me and doesn't get tangled.

elly66 02-11-2015 06:44 AM

Looks great! I have a sewing table I bought from a yard sale, a desk gotten at a second hand shop, and a folding table from Walmart that I combined similar to yours. It did shrink my space some but love the set up.

An expensive sewing station is completely out of the budget due to health issues. When I think about it, I'm not sure I would be any more pleased with an expensive sewing desk and cabinets than I am with what I came up with. For under $100. I have seen the suspended system and wondered about that but for now my station works.

Thanks, I did redo the chair. Had some old quilted fabric and a thrift store chair. Got tired of looking a black. Hope to get a newer chair soon.

My sewing machine was on an old farm table, but it was always cluttered with my tools and projects, so I found one of those old oak desks that teachers used when I was a kid, and now the clutter has real drawers to live in. I especially love the two slide outs that are either side of me when I sew ( like a breadboard in a kitchen), now I just need to make a small ironing pad to use on one of them. Best $35 I ever spent at Goodwill.

wildyard 02-11-2015 09:37 AM

How wonderful to have room for all that help with supporting your quilt!!! Color me green!!!

To be honest, that is what I have found to be best for me in the long-run -- and often the least expensive too, especially if I count not only gasoline but time. As I have gotten older, TIME has become my most precious commodity!

MargeD 02-11-2015 01:36 PM

That is a great solution, where the quilt is entirely supported while you quilt. Great use of those tables.

lynnie 02-11-2015 02:24 PM

looks great and your kitty loves it. that's the important part.

Michellesews 02-11-2015 02:39 PM

Prism, I was going to ask her the same thing! I have the Janoop and recently a lady brought me a quilt her grandmother had made out of double knit poly. It must have weighed 90 pounds. She wanted a new binding put on and that support made it so so easy! I love it. And I don't have the space she has.

nativetexan 02-11-2015 04:10 PM

Ha, ha. Tables come in handy don't they? your cat likes it!!!

chris_quilts 02-11-2015 07:20 PM

Hope the quilt inspector thanked you for the new viewing station at the window.

I like the setup and could see me doing that if I didn't take over the dining room table most of the time when I quilt. I also just got a lovely vintage sewing machine in a cool cabinet for my annivalenbirday present. That is anniversary, Valentine's day and birthday present all rolled into one - all within 3 weeks of each other. Ugh!! I need to get it cleaned up and some moved out before I bring it upstairs to use.

IBQUILTIN 02-11-2015 07:31 PM

whenever I am working on a large quilt, my sewing room is wall to wall tables too. Works for me and that is all that matters. I too am a widow trying to survive on Social Security, so I feel your financial pain

rj.neihart 02-12-2015 03:25 AM

You set-up looks marvelous! A lot like my own - if it works, why fix it?

Laurajbr 02-12-2015 03:51 AM

I love your space. What a nice haven.
I built my own quilt suspenders using left over blanket binding strips and 50¢ clips I bought at the hardware store. The trickiest part is fastening them to the ceiling.
Now I have a permanent ribbon swag in one corner. I really like it in use, and as decoration.

zennia 02-12-2015 04:01 AM

It's amazing what we can come up with when need be. Your idea looks great. Who needs fancy. Just something to get the job done.

Texas_Sue 02-12-2015 05:04 AM

Couldn't resist - I ordered for my Sweet16 sit down quilting system. Thanks for sharing.

Texas_Sue 02-12-2015 05:12 AM

I think you have a great set up.

caspharm 02-12-2015 10:17 AM
