Okay so I'm trying to figure out how to label my quilt for the United Way silent auction...

Hand Made by machine?? It's sounds funny. How do you say the quilt was hand made, without making people think it was hand pieced and hand quilted? Both were done by machine.

As always, thanks for helping me out...:)

sahm4605 08-25-2011 04:58 AM

home made would work. that way people understand that there is a person who made the quilt.

KR 08-25-2011 04:59 AM

What if you say "handcrafted?" Or "created?"

JeannieT 08-25-2011 04:59 AM

machine pieced and quilted

That's enough.

Those that know will know. Those that don't still won't, but at least they'll know it didn't come from the Pottery Barn. ;-)

I don't think you need to specify the method.

shortstuff 08-25-2011 05:09 AM

I liked created

I agree :)

Ladyjanedoe 08-25-2011 05:12 AM

Of course, there's another angle to throw into the mix when a person only does the piecing and not the quilting. It's no longer the work of only one. In that case I think "created by " both the piecer *and* the quilter is most appropriate.

Specially made for _______ by ___________.

One-of-a -kind quilt made by ______________

I've wondered about how to label things, too.

patd 08-25-2011 05:22 AM

Is it a pattern or came out of your head. If yes it can be original design or creation by michael.
Or original design lovingly created for the unit ed d way by michael

Carol J. 08-25-2011 05:28 AM

Every quilt is "hand made" if you think of it. Just say,
Made by and your name. If it is an original design, mention that and if you used a pattern from someone's book, give that person the credit by adding:

"A --------design"

blueangel 08-25-2011 05:31 AM

Ditto

miholmes 08-25-2011 05:34 AM

This was a Tube quilting design. So I can say "A Missouri Star Quilt Company Design" because that's where I saw it. :)
So does this look ok? Or too wordy?

Quilt: Simple Scraps
Size: Lap Quilt
Desc: A quilt created by scraps from previous projects. All fabric is quilt shop quality. Pieced with Aurifil 50 wt, and quilted with Superior brand quilting thread.

Pieced and Quilted by Michael Holmes.
Design by The Missouri Star Quilt Company

What about "custom made"? Which it is!

I like "created", even better than my suggestion of custom made.

I didn't know that the design idea orginated with the MSQC, did it? The method, maybe, but think the actual design idea is much older than that. To be honest, if it was me, I'd leave that part off of the quilt itself. For the label, I think the:

Pieced and Quilted by Michael Holmes.

with the year and location added to it.

Maybe tuck the rest in with a small sign to be displayed with the quilt. I know you want to give credit where credit is due, but that would be more label than what I'd want, personally. :)

I wanna see the quilt, btw!! ;)

Annie68 08-25-2011 05:44 AM

I would just say, machine pieced and quilted by (your name.) No one would care where the fabric came from or the brand of thread.

Good luck

Grannymom 08-25-2011 05:46 AM

What's wrong with saying "hand made"? Did you use your feet?
Hand pieced=stitched by hand
Hand quilted=quilted by hand
Hand made=made by using your HANDS....

So, "Hand made, machine pieced, machine quilted"
or "Hand made, machine stitching"

cutting, pinning, sewing, sandwiching, quilting - all done by your hands....

miholmes 08-25-2011 05:48 AM

Ohhh and just to clarify, this is for the silent auction card so people know what they are bidding on.

Not the actual label that is on the quilt.....I never label my quilts....(I know I'm bad and that I should...I just haven't yet)

Annaquilts 08-25-2011 05:51 AM

Simple Scraps

Hand made ( or Created by or Home made) by Michael Holmes

optional date in smaller numbers and maybe washing and drying instructions

Hand made does not equal hand pieced and hand quilted to me. If I pieced and quilted a quilt by hand I would state so hand pieced and hand quilted. Hand made-To me it means you sat behind sewing machine and made it. It was not some big machine in a factory.

I can't wait to see it.

leatheflea 08-25-2011 05:53 AM

Pieced and quilted by__________
in 2011

This is what I do. I let them figure out if its by hand or machine. its not hard to tell, and most who collect quilts or buy them easily figure it out.

Fine for the card. For the label your name and date are sufficient.

Carol J. 08-25-2011 07:43 AM

Custom made usually means made according to a specific size, color and style, just for one person and one of a kind.
Michael, your idea is perfect and gives all the information needed for someone interested in purchasing your quilt.
Answers all the questions about contents, designer and who made it and who is donating the quilt.
Go for it, you are on the right track.

I'm with Anna. What's wrong with using hand made? It is an apt description.

sewmary 08-25-2011 08:43 AM

Thanks for the great ideas! I am going to do the same thing for United Way and wondered about this alos.

fabric_fancy 08-25-2011 09:21 AM

since this is a silent auction to raise money i'd leave off the fact that its scraps of fabric leftover from other projects.

it might lead people to bid less thinking its leftovers from the real project.

try to make your label read in a way that people want to bid more money.

quiltedmermaid 08-25-2011 09:50 AM

I always say machine pieced and quilted also...

QuiltnNan 08-25-2011 12:08 PM

you could say 'crafted by'.

NanaCsews2 08-25-2011 12:30 PM

'Created especially for you by the hands of ...'

I have used this many times.

jitkaau 08-26-2011 03:09 AM

"Machine pieced and quilted by Michael Holmes",plus date would be sufficient, I think. Although, I must confess that I usually reveal the thread and materials used so that the buyer is aware of the quality.

brushandthimble 08-26-2011 03:56 AM

I usually label mine something to the effect

machine pieced and machine quiilted by My Name

or made by My Name
machine pieced and quilted

Exactly! Same is true for "home made"...sounds like a jar of jam.

My suggestion...
Title: Simple Scraps
Size: XX" x XX" lap quilt
Desc: 100% cotton fabric, cotton thread
Machine pieced and quilted by Michael Holmes, your city, state
August 2011
Design by The Missouri Star Quilt Company

That is the basic information that the owner would need to provide to an appraiser so why not make it easy for them. ;)

aronel 08-26-2011 04:02 AM

Homemade - is what I tell everyone. I plan, cut, piece and quilt all my quilts, they are homemade (by machine and me).

I often use the terms, "Custom made by" or "An original by". How about "From the machine of"?

I agree with this. Handcrafted is what I use.

When I made and sold pottery on my wheel, the tags said, "Stoneware handcrafted by Betty Herloski."
