I have just finished hand quilting a twin size quilt for my daughter and I used 2 and 1/2 spools of thread to quilt, 150 yards each spool.
There are places where there is no quilting (more than 2 inches) but the fabric is very stable and tightly woven (it is 100% cotton drapery fabric) and I used batting made of cotton/bamboo. The backer is a muslin that was 60 inches wide so there is no seam (!!).
I am really tired of quilting this one.
I know with machine quilting there is a LOT more, but what do you all think about coverage when hand quilting?

irishrose 05-20-2011 06:18 AM

I like less quilting for a softer look and feel. Yours looks perfect to me. The batting package usually tells the minimim distance for quilting, but I can't imagine less than two inches. Smile and pronounce it finished!

It's avery pretty quilt. Beautiful prints and colors with excellent quilting. Lucky daughter!

You have done a fabulous job. The batting package gives a recommended space to be quilted. This would appy to hand or machine quilting. Personally I think you have done more quilting on this than some do with machines. It's lovely, I say, CONGRATS!, your done! :)

feline fanatic 05-20-2011 06:23 AM

Hand quilting, like machine quilting can vary alot in density of quilting. It is all dependent on what your batting requires and what kind of look you are trying to acheive. It sounds to me like you have enough quilting in this for your batting. If it looks like it has enough to you call it done and bind it up.

Edited to add: This looks fabulous and your quilting stitches are wonderful.

I think it looks great! I'd say call it finished and enjoy the fruits of your hard work!

I think it is great! I have a full sized quilt that I bought for when my Mom caame to visit last year and there wasn't time to finish a homemade one. It was hand quilted and I must say it has less quilting than I thought it would have. It is holding up nicely through use and washings. In some areas it is quilted at 2 1/8" intervals and then in the borders it is almost 11 inches apart. I like the way you have done yours. :)

Beachbaby12 05-20-2011 06:54 AM

You should be very proud of your hand quilting - it is simply gorgeous and a treasure! To me, it is personal preference. I love hand quilting.

amma 05-20-2011 06:55 AM

What are the quilting requirements on the batting package? If you have fulfilled them? Then I would call it finished!
You did a beautiful job on this quilt :D:D:D

Holice 05-20-2011 06:58 AM

Forget what the batting requires in regard to the amount of quilting. It is the look you want and the amount you need for the pattern to give good stability. Also the use of the quilt. If a wallhanging, the batting can shift in hanging, if washed then might need more quilting for stability. If always used as a spread then less quilting because it doesn't get much hard use. I believe there should be a sufficient amount of quilting reqired for any of these reasons.

Your quilt is beautiful and stitches are very nice. I don't use a set amount when hand quilting, I just kind of quilt by what the pattern of my fabric is...I am looking for the puffyness of the quilt to be just what I want...I guess I think 6 inches in some areas but in other parts of the quilt more or it could be less...yours is awesome..

Painiacs 05-20-2011 08:19 AM

I think you are DONE! It is very beautiful! U did a great job!!

rusty quilter 05-20-2011 08:55 AM

It looks great. Call it done, and pat yourself on the back for sticking with it!

Beautiful quilt. What a lovely present.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-20-2011 12:18 PM

You did a fabulous job!! I'm sorry I don't really have an answer for you though. For me it depends........
I never seem to work on one straight through as I get tired of doing the same thing but I always have one to pick up to work on.
I'm sure you're glad it's done!! :)

eastermarie 05-20-2011 01:18 PM

Your quilt and quilting look just right. Nicely done.

EXACTLY.

sinceresissy 05-21-2011 03:52 AM

Looks like you have lots of stitches in there. Looks good. I don't put as many stitches in a print as I do plain material. It just depends. Yours looks very nice.

#1piecemaker 05-21-2011 04:13 AM

Oh my!! I see your tiny perfect stitches. How wonderful a job you've done. And it looks like you've done a super job quilting it too. I'd say you were finished. Your batting should tell you the proper distance required for it. And, the standard rule with the old cotton batting is 2 inches. But, with the newer batting you can get away with a lot lot less. Bind it and forget it.

katlady 05-21-2011 05:16 AM

Really a lovey quilt, I like the idea of less quilting so it is soft don't like so much quilting that it is a stiff board.

To be honest, these were fabric samples that came to my job. All discontinued Scalamandre fabrics so their colorways all blend. Can't take credit for that!
Only had to buy batting, backer and THREAD!

I appreciate all the reassurance that this is enough quilting.
The batting says every 2-4 inches and there are places where it is more than 6 inches but it will lie on her bed most of the time, or be rolled up at the foot. Also, it being a twin and not a double/queen probably helps. I just barely covers the bed...I ran out of pieces!

Linda; If you are HAPPY with it then it's finshed.

ButtermilkMama 05-21-2011 07:05 AM

Very nice!!! I really do want to more of that!

Sneed 05-21-2011 07:11 AM

I usually do more hand quilting on plainer fabrics and less on the busy ones. Kind of like on a whole cloth quilt you load it, and on those where the quilting won't be seen you do only what is necessary...minimum 4"

KathyKat 05-21-2011 07:29 AM

I think it looks great!! Plenty of quilting and you did a beautiful job!

momcpo 05-21-2011 07:33 AM

beautiful quilt. Looking at the pics of the back, looks like you did a very nice job. Stick a fork in you, you're done.

Jume 05-21-2011 08:35 AM

You are to be commended! Quilts are such thoughtful gifts.

I agree w/Irishrose - Wall hangings might have more quilting & thinner batting, but it should be a personal preference & depend on use. To me & as a hand quilter, "quilt" means "soft", so I like less.

ShirlinAZ 05-21-2011 09:50 AM

Your quilt is beautiful. I believe in the old addage "less is more". IMHO most quilts I see are over-quilted. Unless the quilting actually adds to the finished quilt, I like the least quilting that will hold the sandwich together firmly, usually what the batting calls for. If you want the quilting to be the main feature you might as well do a whole cloth quilt. To me, flat heavily quilted wall hangings are fine, but quilts to cover up with should be thick, fluffy, and cozy. To each his own, but this is my preference.

Sharonsews 05-21-2011 09:57 AM

Looks great!

MarySews 05-21-2011 10:21 AM

In the old days they just quilted enough to hold it together and it is printed on the package -- usually the package says something like 4 inches -- it looks lovely and classic without all the machine quilting which takes away the 'loft'.

Great-great granny 05-21-2011 10:57 AM

AGREE

Taughtby Grandma 05-21-2011 03:07 PM

That is really pretty. It looks like it's quilted close enough. I'd call it a job well done!

I totally agree with irishrose. For my taste, too much quilting takes the focus away from the fabric and the piecing. And with a quilt that has so many interesting prints, it would get lost anyway. I can't even imagine quilting through heavier fabric by hand. It looks great the way it is.

Nice work!

I can't make a recommendation, but I just finished hand quilting a scant queen size that I have picked up on and off over the last 5-6 years - and I'm still not sure it is enough. I washed it and the batting did fine, but, I may add more quilting. But, like you, I'm tired of it!!!

charlotte625 05-21-2011 06:33 PM

now I am no exspert blike this quilters but it looks great to me

Rose L 05-21-2011 06:34 PM

Haven't read all the comments but the Bamboo/Cotton mix battings are usually 8"-10" on the spacing. I think you're good to go! Gorgeous quilt, BTW ;)
