I have a 14" plastic hoop, and a snap together frame. Jim got a great price on it, and I feel a little guilty that I do not use it very often, but I can only do straight lines on it. I user my hoop all the time and am even thinking about getting another so that I can work on two quilts at the same time.

it depends on the project- I often do not use either- I just baste well & hold the fabric- some projects I choose to use a hoop, and once in a great while I set up the big frame & load up a quilt- just depends on what you are comfortable with- there are no rules- you can do it any way you choose.

I usually use a hoop, about 14". Sometimes nothing. The main reason I like using the hoop is that it allows me to easily find where I stopped working the last time!

For the life of me I cannot use a hoop to hand quilt. I love hand quilting but the hoop gets in my way. I like to rock my quilt as I sew if that makes sense. Can't do that in a hoop.

This thread is very helpful. I've been wanting to try hand quilting, and I have loads of embroidery hoops of all sizes. I used to have a Q-snap that I used once then sold, and I was thinking about getting one of those wood standing hoops because I thought I needed that, but you all are proof that I don't – and that I shouldn't get one until I try hand quilting with what I have for awhile!

I have a Grace standing hoop which I use and love. My DH also bought me a standing quilting frame that uses springs attached to boards to hold the sandwiched quilt in place on the frame. Can't remember the manufacturer and right now the frame is in storage since we will be moving in a couple months.

I have 2 hoops, 14" and 18", that I use on small quilts, and a Grace floor stand that I use on larger quilts.

I use a small PVC quilt frame, pin my quilts, then quilt on my lap. This allows me to sit on a more comfortable chair with less bending over any frame. My back thanks me !

I prefer a floor frame but have now limited my had quilting to smaller projects due to health reasons. Hoops do not like me so mine have been passed on to others. Larger projects are now machine quilted.
