how cold is it in Fla? about 28 and blowing snow all day here in maine
|
I purchased it last year at a quilt show, but don't know how it would come apart. I think it's supposed to, but haven't figured it out yet and don't want to break it. Lint really builds up in it, I've tried blowing it with canned air, but nothing works.

There are lots of other great things at Harbor Freight (and many hardware stores) as well. I bought 2 books of patterns to use with a jig saw. Many of the patterns are great for applique. Mechanic's tool dishes are great for pins. They come in several sizes and shapes. I have 3" and 6" round ones for various pins, bobbins etc. I got a great extending magnet on a stick that will even pick up my largest scissors

Are you folks getting these blades from an actual HF store, or are you ordering them on-line. I had never heard of Harbor Freight until I started perusing this board, and I don't believe that there are any in Florida.

my HF doesn't carry the package with the handle or the replacement blades anymore.
|
I found some HF blades yesterday in the carpet cutter section of the store. They fit my 45 rotary cutter. They were $1.99 for two.
|
would you tell me where in the store you find them?

while at harbor freight check out their tweezers. they have a package of 6 long tweezers for around $7.00. Much easier to use than the short ones found at fabric/craft stores.

I have use them in mine. They work fine.

They are Carpet Cutting Blades and if they don't have the replacement packages just buy the carpet cutter for 3.99 and it comes with extra blades. Still cheep.

They are not everywhere. They are also on line, although some of the more interesting things are in store specials. If you find a store, don't be put off by the fact that they are obviously intended for men. You have to look, because the clerks won't have a clue what you are talking about. I even got a piece of email addressed to Mr. Mary....

I have a Martelli rotary cutter and had lost the spring. My LQS was able to contact her supplier and he (gladly) sent me two new springs. He also told her to tell me that the Martelli brand blades have a notch in them so they have a nice tight fit; and if I'm having problems with the cutter, I should stick to the blades made for it. I do notice when I cut through thick fabric, my cutter wants to 'wobble' and doesn't always cut through all the layers. So I recommend that for regular cotton fabric, use any blade you have, and for the really thick fabric, use the Martelli blade in the Martelli cutter.

I bought blades from HF for my Olfa cutter. The blades fit, but the hole in the center is round and when I cut through several fabric thicknesses the blade rolls. It rolls right over the fabric instead of cuttting the fabric. Works OK if I'm just cutting 1 layer of fabric. I'm glad I only bought a couple blades, because I won't buy anymore. Will just buy my blades when they are on sale, and sharpen them.

Hi! They are called Replacement carpet cutter blades, ITEM # 97642. I bought mine in Clarksville, TN.
|
ITEM # 97642 Carpet cutter blades
These blades on the package says, "For Carpet Cutter 95378" |
Go to their website....Martelli Enterprises ... and click on demonstration videos. There are several, with close ups and easy to follow directions. When you replace the blade (which I have not in over a year, and it's still sharp enough to cut thro 10 or more layers) or the spring, the lint is easy to take out.

For Sandraphippard, I just ordered a Martelli rotary cutter and when I called was told if I chose to order the type with the casing that needs to be cleaned, take a wire twist tie- with paper removed, and push clogged fabric out. Hope this helps.

It fits the Fiskars.

HF blades work in Martelli cutters, but you have to unscrew the screw once in a while or it will get too tight. I think Martelli designed the cutter with the screw BACKWARDS so this would happen, and we'd think we couldn't use any blades but theirs!
Look at the cutter, and you'll see they put arrows showing which way to to turn it to change the blade. Anyway, if you let it get too tight, you'll need 2 wrenches to loosen it - one to hold the blade and one to turn the screw! The Martelli blades have a notch that keep them from getting too tight. Sneaky, heh! |
Just got back from a visit to Harbor Freight, and I am thrilled! Yes, these are the same size blades that fit the Olfa, Fiskars, Clover and Martelli. Any and all 45mm size rotary cutters. I love that they have a smooth center hole rather than the notched hole on Olfa blades. Cuts through fabric like butter. And at $1.99 per 2-pack, you can't beat that! LOVE IT!!
Just curious, I wonder how their carpet cutter that these blades go into would work on fabric....hmm |
Check the tutorial video on Martelli's website....there is a reason for the difference in direction....no righty tighty, lefty loosey.
I saw Dave doing these demos last year at the Lancaster Show....and if you do it right, there is nothing to beat the Martelli rotary cutter. But....I'm a bit confused....he told us the notched blades would not fit his cutter. Some of you have mentioned using this type. Perhaps that's why you're not totally happy with it. He, Dave Martelli, said to use the round centered blades. I am making flannel rag quilts for many, many, many granddaughters...lol...and the 45 mm Martelli cutter goes thro the many thicknesses like butter. I can cut 15 layers of flannel perfectly....you have to use the right pressure on the ruler....their rubber black one is heavy and good, but I really like the clear ones better for regular minimal thickness cutting. I'm going to buy the 60 mm cutter at the Lancaster show in March, definitely. He gives us a good deal on some items....I'm considering some of the feet as well. |

Just for ya'll to know--Martelli HAS TO USE their blades. The center cutout is not round like the OLFA. I tried it and te blade wiggles when you use it to cut. But-that said, I Love-Love-Love the Martelli and how easy it is to use and use it all the time.

My experience with the blades that are made to sell as hardware is that they don't stay sharp as long, but are still cheaper to use, even taking that into account.
|
Yes, Harbor Freight blades fit Fiskirs cutters.
|
I have Fiskars and they fit perfect. Have noticed that each one is a little different as far as sharpness. Doesn't seem to be uniform. The first ones I bought were extremely sharp. The second ones I couldn't get sharp even sharpening it myself.
