sewbizgirl 09-29-2019 02:16 PM

Love the quilt Don!

Great yard sale finds, too. I love sales like that!

juliasb 09-29-2019 03:27 PM

Nice work on the quilt top. It is stunning. What a fabric haul! I just love it when I see things like this!

osewme 09-29-2019 04:03 PM

Yes, I've ripped out the same mistake twice & after the second time I just walked away from it to pick up on another day. When I start making mistakes like that I know it means I am tired & not concentrating on my work. What a wonderful group of fabrics you found at the tag sale. Happy sewing to you!

Wow, You got a really good deal. Wish you a lot of fun using this fabric. I love all the colors. Some of that is different for you isn't it? Your quilts are going to be beautiful in those colors. I can't wait to see them.

I have ripped things more than twice. On one, I had the first border around the center medallion finished and just couldn't stand it, so ripped it all off and found some different stuff. Much better. Then I had put 1/4 inch lines around some portions of the pattern, and had to rip them, too. It's hard to fit in that extra 1/4 in. when it isn't planned for. Then I had four corner stones around the center. When the entire top was finished, (I thought) I found that one was sideways. By the time I found that, I was all done. I couldn't rip again, even though it was still a flimsy. Most people don't see that one square has the little bow ties going sideways while the other three are up and down. The quilt took a blue ribbon twice.

I love how the sashing comes together! Beautiful.
I tried set-in circles for the first time and had to rip out the same circle 4 whole times and then only partial segments of it again a few more times. I didn't think my fabric was going to hold up to that much ripping!

Sharonquilts 09-29-2019 08:49 PM

Hahaha ... only twice? My bargello has been ripped so many times I've lost count. That's why it remains a UFO. I'm like Osewme ... when I rip twice, I walk away too and it's usually because I'm also too tired.

Don, your work is always so nice it's encouraging to know that even a quilter as good as you has an off day. But I'm sorry you had to do it.

luvstoquilt 09-30-2019 03:45 AM

My ripper and I are well acquainted! Love your quilt and lucky you to get that amazing bargain!

Battle Axe 09-30-2019 03:50 AM

I'm ripping one out right now. My top went together swimmingly. But this piece border is a nightmare. It just doesn't fit. It's the Bonnie Hunter Smith Mountain Morning, little three inch blocks, I should be able to do this. It's got to be a migrating seam allowance. When I measure it, there are numerous places it is off. Pics to follow.

grannie cheechee 09-30-2019 04:37 AM

Gee, Don, only 2 times? I was making a bear baby quilt that had two different sizes and colors for ears. I ripped 4 times, and went to my quilting friend, and had her pin it together. Came home and put it in the pattern upside down. I had made this same pattern for 5 other babies. lol Love your fabric find, Don

When I was making my Storm at Sea quilt some 20 years ago I was using old style cutting and piecing techniques. I believe in doing all of one step at a time for consistency purposes, and so I sewed the long skinny triangles onto the large diamonds wrong on every single bias-edged piece. I carefully took them apart and did it again. And when I say again, I mean, I sewed them on wrong again!

It was bad enough the first time but the second time all I could do was mutter to myself that if I didn't like doing this I should be aware that it was all in my control and I could prevent it from happening again. And so far that mistake hasn't happened again. At least not twice in a row :p

I don't quite have the words down, but my aunt has a saying about "if all you can say is that it was a learning experience, that isn't saying much!" Not that learning things isn't a good thing, but how we get those experiences can really be awful.

Here is my problem. Top measures 63 5/8 and the number of blocks in these two strips is 22. When I got them all trimmed and sewn together I come out one inch over. Do I go back and snug some up? Try to ease it in? Hack off the extra?

Both times I get the same result. The plain strip is a 2 inch cut finishing at 1 1/2 inches which adds 3 inches to the top. On paper it come out. Not in reality.

I call these pieces "Peaky" and "Spiky". Mine were cut on the Accuquilt. I already take Parkinsons medication and have cut a much-missed-slice off my left index finger.

Iceblossom 09-30-2019 05:24 AM

To get the design to match up at the corners you pretty much have to ease what you have in. Yes, it would fit better if you took off one of the half triangles. If you've made the other side units and have similar issues, I'd consider extending the floating border as being simpler to alter. You could take it off, or maybe a narrow really dark additional inner border.

If you can make the corners so you can end at the valleys instead of at the halves of the triangles, you can just trim down that floating border slightly.

I know you are quite the detective in figuring out the problem, I think double check the seam allowance on the bottom, especially where the triangles meet. Sometimes when you are doing the seam allowance correctly it looks funky as you do it, so you adjust but it's not what you want. When we sew, small differences become huge when repeated because each mistake can be doubled by the two sides of the pieces.

Everyone has ripped out on a quilt top once or twice...seems to be the normal. It's when you are actually quilting the darn thing and have to rip out that bothers me.

isewman 10-01-2019 05:23 AM

Me ripping out was a minor thing compared to what Ive read Everyone take care and will post again later on when I get my quilt top done, maybe

lorimax5859 10-01-2019 05:47 AM

Wow!!! You hit the jackpot!

tuckyquilter 10-01-2019 07:13 AM

Score on the fabric....
Yes, I have ripped out quilt parts "more than once, twice and ??" The Last Mystery quilt I made was more ripping than sewing or so it seemed. I'm experienced, but for some reason that particular pattern scrambled my normal thinking. I finally got it done and gave to a friend for a huge favor they did for me.

Jordan 10-01-2019 07:39 AM

Yes, I have ripped out many seams and re-sewed just cause I am such a perfectionist and that really frustrates me. I put it all on myself and that is why I don't get too many quilts done.
You really got a great deal on the garage sale. All that fabric will keep you busy for awhile and it is very pretty fabrics. Enjoy sewing them up.

Ellen 1 10-01-2019 09:33 AM

Hello Don, The bright fabrics seem a bit out of your box and I cannot wait to see what you make with them.

And, yes I have ripped out large areas to “fix” something that I notice when the quilt top is all pieced and ready to quilt.

Ellen

I think it was just a 'bad brain' week - I ended up sewing most of a "simple" half square triangle quilt 2x. I managed to put both blocks rows on backwards. It really steamed me at the time and now it lingers with a border but no backing yet. I feel like we need some space before we can approach each other again! You got some beautiful fabrics there - enjoy!

sewingitalltogether 10-01-2019 11:10 AM

Yes. My current work is a Vintage Rose of Judy Niemeyer. It has a large arc for a petal and one for the other side. I lost count of how many times I've ripped out the same seam!! I'm not a newbie at her patterns. This is #3 of her patterns. But holy cow. I had at least 3 days last week where I have sewn all day and made no progress. Sew a little, rip a little.

Cheshirecatquilter 10-02-2019 09:17 AM

No. Not me. Never. Ooops! my nose just grew 3" longer. I am not only on a first name basis with my seam ripper, I have applied to adopt it and give it legal status.

Hi! The Binding Tool Quilt that I just finished was a quilt that I made so many mistakes on that it took me forever to finish. At one point, I had all the blocks (16") sewn together and realized that I had 2 sets of 4 blocks rotated and sewn in wrong. I stewed over it for a couple of days and then decided to take the whole quilt apart and start over. I did it and then used 6 yards of bias tape (that I made), sewed it on the quilt to hide the outrageous mistake and finished it! I am so happy that I did. I love the quilt and so does my son. Whew!!! Dodged another bullet, as they used to say! Yolanda
