Has anyone bought one of these or even seen them?

I was in my local Wal Mart Fabric department (and we don't have a problem with it being staffed) when I saw this machine. I am going to try it because my DH "forced" me to buy it. It is called a Rotary Cutting Machine by Simplicity. It has a pinking blade and a regular straight blade. It says it cuts by pressure not sharpness. It is supposed to cut cotton, fleece, felt, paper, duck cloth. It is supposed to cut any fabric. If you have ever used one, let me know what you think. You can dial the width from 3/8" to 2 3/4". If it works, it would be nice for doing jelly rolls.

I just noticed that I took the picture of the "French" side of the box. OH WELL, our ladies in France will enjoy that.

QuiltnNan 03-12-2012 03:29 AM

have fun with your new 'toy' :)

quiltymom 03-12-2012 03:32 AM

My girlfriend has one she got for Christmas and really doesn't like it!!!! Good luck with yours!

craftiladi 03-12-2012 03:36 AM

I have been eye balling them at Joann's , please let us know after you have played & experimented .

just retired 03-12-2012 03:43 AM

Everything that I have read says this is not worth the money,, I have looked at it and after reading the reviews on this did not get it..... Hope yours works better,,, let us all know.....

bunniequilter 03-12-2012 03:52 AM

These machines are a neat concept, but I still prefer cutting myself, its part of the process. I am one of those weird quilters who even enjoys hand basting, its very theraputic to me.

Moedeenie 03-12-2012 03:53 AM

I do not have this machine, but do own the bobbin winder and binding machine which I love! I agree this would be great for making jelly rolls...also for sashing strips, borders and I think it would make log cabin quilts a breeze! Lucky you! Have fun Twinkie and let us know how you like it!

hobo2000 03-12-2012 03:55 AM

I had one and never could get it to cut a perfect strip so I took It back. Good luck on yours.

BellaBoo 03-12-2012 04:14 AM

I have one but it's impossible for me to get an accurate cut strip for quilting. It's great for cutting strips for rag crochet, wrapped clothesline for bowls, rag rugs and other craft projects. There is two machines, one is the bias binding maker. I have that one too and I use it all the time. It works great. Odd you haven't seen or read about these machines, they have been available for several years now.

twinkie 03-12-2012 04:27 AM

I haven't been out much LOL. I just don't usually shop for "expensive" toys like this

I would save my money. I don't have one, but have read many, many complaints about the machine.

auntpiggylpn 03-12-2012 06:08 AM

Good luck with your new toy! I had one and I just couldn't get accurate strips from it. If you do a search here on the board there are numerous threads about this machine. I wish you luck!

Handcraftsbyjen 03-12-2012 06:16 AM

I couldn't get accurate strips so back it went. I hope you have better luck.

mighty 03-12-2012 07:08 AM

I have one but do not care for it. Can not get good strips with it.

threads57 03-12-2012 07:21 AM

I do not have one but I would suggest you try it out for yourself. You may love it.

charlottemarie 03-12-2012 07:30 AM

I bought that exact model and I don't like it at all. It rips some of the cuts and is just horrible. Barely cuts at all!

Dixie1954 03-12-2012 07:34 AM

I work in the fabric department at a WalMart. When these rotary machines came in we were curious. We took one out of the box and played with it. IT DID NOT WORK. When a customer asks us about them we tell them of our experience using the machine. In my opinion if there was a way to run a stick of hot butter thru it it would not slice it.

caspharm 03-12-2012 07:48 AM

That is the Canadian side, for selling in Quebec. I have the Bias maker and love it, but have heard mixed reviews about the strip cutter.

babindg12200 03-12-2012 08:05 AM

Hay, that sounds good. How much did it cost?

katsbmr 03-12-2012 08:21 AM

I bought one and returned it. I hated it! There was no way to keep the fabric straight, and I couldnt cut straight strips.

AliKat 03-12-2012 08:24 AM

These work best if you either Best Press or starch your fabric first. Then the cuts are true and straight.

bakermom 03-12-2012 08:54 AM

i have one and while it does cut the fabric fine, I had problems getting the fabric to feed thru straight. maybe it's one of those things that you have to do enough to get the hang of it.

Prism99 03-12-2012 11:01 AM

This gets really bad reviews from quilters. It does not cut with sufficient accuracy. It is probably great for someone who cuts up fabrics to make rugs, where accuracy isn't such a big deal.

I would take it back without even trying it.

jcrow 03-12-2012 11:06 AM

I bought one and was so excited to use it. Well, it didn't work at all. So I took it back and got my money back.

OzarksGma 03-12-2012 11:17 AM

I have this machine, strip cutter and the bias maker. To me this one wasn't worth the money. I had a problem keeping the strips uniform, especially the bias strips. The straight strips were a bit easier, but you don't make bias tape with straight strips. I cut my strips on my Go cutter, then run them through the bias maker, much more precise strip cuts.

virtualbernie 03-12-2012 01:57 PM

Take it back...

Lori S 03-12-2012 02:01 PM

I got one when they first came out , took it back the next day. The cutting was not very precise.

Helen Bankert 03-12-2012 02:10 PM

This machine is not much good. You can cut the stripe straight enough for quilts. It can be used for making rugs. However the blade did not last long. I would not buy it.

Linda1 03-13-2012 02:43 AM

I have one and I don't like it. I am going to return it.

twinkie 03-13-2012 02:58 AM

DH always reads the instructions on anything new (I am not that precise) and he adjusted the tension for me. It cuts just fine and I think you have to play with it to learn how to guide the material in the groove. Mine works much better if I have the machine sideways so I can feed the fabric in (somewhat how a sewing machine works). It reminded me of learning how to sew a 1/4" seam accurately. I don't think I am going to return it just yet. I was able to get some pretty accurate strips with it. I am sure it would be great for scrapbooking also. Thanks for all the reviews from you ladies.

gammaginny 03-13-2012 03:01 AM

I have one, and it is very difficult to get an accurate cut if it cuts at all. The blade never quite cuts all the way through. I have adjusted it many, many times with no luck. It just sits on a shelf. Sorry. It is quite expensive for a machine that doesn't really work.

Drumrunner1966 03-13-2012 03:12 AM

I bought one anD returned it the next day. Quicker and more accurate to just use my mat amd rotary cutter.

grann of 6 03-13-2012 03:51 AM

This is just my opinion, but I have seen it too, thought it was rather pricey for something that just cuts strips. I have the June Tailor slotted cutting mats and find them excellent for jelly rolls and charm squares. I tend to shy away from the gadgets as they always end up in the back of my closet not being used. My DH used to get me gadgets too. Remember the electric scissors?!?!?!

I love my June Tailor slotted ruler too! I have almost all the strip dies for my accuquilt and I still find myself cutting the strips by hand!!! I haven't even used the strip dies once!!!

jaciqltznok 03-13-2012 04:36 AM

good luck, in the industry this is known as an egg....meaning it does not work worth diddly.the concept is good, the marketing ploy is good(as in you think you can cut jelly rolls), but it is hard to hang on to the fabric and get a straight cut, you have precut strips to fit the space and you can not do more than one layer at a time!

onaemtnest 03-13-2012 04:41 AM

I found your comment that you're finding that it cuts 'fairly accurately' interesting. I would want consistently accurate. With the price of fabric putting it through this device I would expect accurate every time and to be user friendly from the get go.

Saving money in not having to replace mis-cuts of fabric and saving time would be bottom line for me, in determining if this device was something I would want taking up space.

Lavada 03-13-2012 04:45 AM

Have never seen one and guess from all these nice quilters here i do not want one

Grannyh67 03-13-2012 04:56 AM

I bought one and took it back. I hated it. It didn't work right. Maybe you will have better luck.

hoppa 03-13-2012 04:57 AM

have seen them but have passed on buying one
