Good one!

Funny, I wondered what the heck a "safety quilt" was...now I realize that I'm made more than one!! LOL!
Ahh, aren't you the funny one? Too late now but an alternative could have been to add sashing to each block to make them all the same. Of course, then it might no longer be a safety quilt. With that said, some of mine end up being safety quilts even before trimming. Bet you've learned a lot over the years and no longer have the scant 1/4" problem though.

You had me there...

Most blocks can be stretched as they are sewn into squares and one doesn't have to make sure they are all the same size. That is the point of using cotton fabric--it gives.
ohh love the name! I'll be sure to use it on some of my "pointless" quilts. :D They shall be named Safety Quilts from now on.
Too funny .... Thinking back, I've made a few Safety Quilts already, now they have a name!
You're funny! I thought, "I've never heard of a safety quilt!".....but I have now! Sounds like something I would do. Thanks for the smile, and a hug for you!
LOL
So that's the kind of quilts I make!
nice idea. I have started putting all my leftover blocks in one bin. Might try to put them all together no matter what size they are in one top. That may be a disaster or a masterpiece.

Well you really piqued my interest. I had no idea what a safey quilt was. Just had to see. Thanks for the good laugh. What a sense of humor you have.
I DO love that name you gave it. I have quilts with tht same name (plus a lot of other names, too).

That's pretty much what I always make. Are the points suppose to be there? :D |
hahahaha.. a safety quilt... I'm working on JUST such a quilt right now!! Our guild's BOM has been star blocks... and I ended up with a few points, but not too many... sigh... In fact, I stitched several blocks more than once, trying to be so careful... sigh...
Oh well... this is when being "global-minded" comes in very handy... I can still hear my sweet momma saying, "Oh don't worry... a man goin' by on horseback won't even notice!" |
Future reference:
You can try to "block" some blocks by spritzing them with water (or a little starch) slightly tuggin them into the correct shape and pinning them to dry. That has worked for me on some blocks. Another method is to add sashing to all blocks and adjust the sashing so the blocks are all the same size. It looks like the BOM blocks are framed. A third method - if the difference isn't that glaring, adjust the seam allowance when sewing the blocks together, particularly when there are points. Lastly - and YES, I have done this: Undo the block and resew it with a scant 1/4". |
Now there is a clever name to it, I can fess up. Yes, of course!!!
Love your attitude ;)
Thanks for the name "Safety Quilt", I know realize my flying geese quilts often have a few "Safety Geese". When I made my first flying geese, I apologised to the lady for whom I had made the quilt. She told me she wouldn't have know the difference and not to point it out in the future. I have taken her advise.

I have a star pattern that ends up like that, but it's called "Pointless Stars"!!!
Caught that right away, cut onw.
Good one! Yes I think I'm pretty "safe" most of the time.
what a clever way to put it, I've made a lot of those in the time I've been quilting
Thanks for sharing.
That's my first chuckle of the day and the day here is almost over!!! Thanks so much. I'll have to remember that one. Thanks for sharing.
Is that funny. I couldn't figure out what a safety quilt would be. I'll have to tell them at group. It is too cute.
Thank you for the name "Safety Quilts". LOL I have made lots of them.
Pointless stars are my specialty!!! Never heard them called Safety quilts, but it so works!!!
Ha ha, that is too funny!
That's why we were taught to use coping strips. Add 1 1/2 inch strip borders around each block, then trim them all down to the size if the smallest one, and no one will notice that the strips aren't the same width.

A Safety Quilt - how cleverly named! Got to remember that to bring a few smiles to us quilters when things do not go exactly as we planned. Thanks for the laugh.
   Sometimes it just happens that way!
