My sewing room is like my church. It's very special to me and off limits to casual visitors. Mostly because I have pieces I'm working on and do NOT want any comments until I'm ready to show my work. My DH brought my SIL in to see my room, I heard her gasp, like the people do when they see hoarders. I was in the middle of a project and you really could not walk in the room. My DH was trying to show off my work so he gets a pass, but I asked him to please never show my craft room again. I was at a loss for words when I heard the gasp of horror...She does not do crafts, so no messes at her house. I do clean up and put away once I'm done with a project (okay, sometimes I do). I guess the best attitude is if momma's creating the best thing to do is duck to avoid flying fabric.

cosyquilter 02-22-2011 11:36 AM

I gasp at my own mess...LOL.

JulieR 02-22-2011 11:37 AM

Nope. I sew in a room with a door for a reason. As they say, you have to break a few eggs to make a cake!

She doesn't know what she is missing.

KatFish 02-22-2011 11:46 AM

Yes, all the time. I tend to just step over and around my mess while I'm working on a project. I clean it up and put everything away when I'm done. I enjoy the clean room for a day or two, and start all over again. People look in my room and gasp when they see the mess, then look in DD's room and think mine looks almost clean.

Raggiemom 02-22-2011 11:46 AM

Me! I gasp at my own mess! :)

I agree! I tell my DH to close his eyes till his hand is on the basement door. (you pass through my craft room to get there)

wytetygeress 02-22-2011 11:52 AM

I don't have a room yet, but yes i gasp when i am doing a project.Cus is a mess. I do have a very good motivation tool to keep everything nice and tidy when i am not quilting...An 18 month old whirlwind. If it is out ( i sew in my living room, and cut in my kitchen) he is going to check it out..and run off with it. I don't know how many scraps of fabric i have found in his toy box...
You SIL should have been respectful about your space. If she doesn't like how you keep your stuff, well her loss, not yours.

Tropical 02-22-2011 11:53 AM

Nope. My messes aren't all that bad and my husband just says I can clean it up when I am done. We both know that I am the one who makes messes. It doesn't bother him. He has even offered to sleep on the futon in the exercise room when I am still using our bed at bedtime to lay out the quilt blocks. He's a Love. :)

And that's all that matters.

I can't hide mine. When you come into my apartment and around the corner to the livingroom the first thing you see in my sewing are right behind the couch. My friends and family are used to it.

Me too.

I cleaned it all up yestereday and even (gasp!) vacuumed the carpet! YES! There is carpet under all the snippets and thread ends!

So, today, I'm busy making a mess in it.

champagnebubbles 02-22-2011 12:06 PM

Nope, I am a clean as you go girl. I really do pick up before I leave the room in the evening. I learned the hard way when it was all in my dinning room.

lindy-2 02-22-2011 12:07 PM

i gasp when i see my sewing room if it was any messyer a small child could get lost in there. i realy need to clean it but my kids dont like it when i spend to much time in there.

quilt queen 2 02-22-2011 12:09 PM

Almost everyone has always gasped when they see my room but they sure like the results that come out of it. When it gets tidy I still get gasps so it's a no win situation!!

SueDor 02-22-2011 12:22 PM

My sewing room is almost every room in the house. And it is a mess.

hobbykat1955 02-22-2011 12:24 PM

Actually I must have strange SIL and girlfriends because they ask me not to clean up because they want to see where I create my quilts and get a flavor for it all. My girlfriend visited from NV and was disappted I clean up and organized.

benjafroo 02-22-2011 12:26 PM

I clean as I go. Everything is sorted by color and in easy to see clear plastic bins. Once in a while I'll just put my rotary cutter on the shelf instead of in the proper place, but I can't leave the room with it messy.

Please...check this out...though I have to say, it is better this week, and I have been in there working...

remember this is one corner of a 8' x 10' room, NOT my entire house...

dixiebelle162002 02-22-2011 12:30 PM

My sewing room door stays locked.....no joke.

MadQuilter 02-22-2011 12:31 PM

I don't gasp, but I sometimes have to scratch my head. How does the room get that way? It's only me in there. Even when DH is in the room, he just sits in his chair and watches TV.

trupeach1 02-22-2011 12:32 PM

I don't have a sewing room I have a sewing house. Fabric on the couch, quilt top hanging over the china cabinet as I decide if I want to add another border. Several sewing baskets on the floor. I gasp all the time..........

thequiltmama 02-22-2011 12:33 PM

I wish I had that problem. I don't have my own space. I have to haul it all out every time I sew. So yes, I would rather hear a gasp and know that I had a sewing room than have no room at all :)

collector49 02-22-2011 12:37 PM

YES !!
That's all I'm going to say.

smockingRN 02-22-2011 12:38 PM

My sewing room is so stuffed with fabric, etc. and it is a mess. I am kind of ashamed...but I do get alot of stuff made...so I'll just have to deal with it!

debbieumphress 02-22-2011 12:40 PM

Are you kidding me???? I have been gasping every day looking at mine but it's getting there. To me that is our room and permission should be granted to visitors. Honestly

exactly...to me the sewing room is like an underwear drawer...if it is not yours you have NO business looking into it!

SuziC 02-22-2011 01:20 PM

I am the only one who gasps at the mess i make! Just feel sorry for her that she is missing out on a great hobby!

suezquilts 02-22-2011 01:38 PM

The don't gasp from the mess, but a pin in the foot on occasion.

Michelle 02-22-2011 01:40 PM

When I have one or two projects on my design wall & no room for anything more I lay blocks out on the floor. You have to walk through my sewing room to get to the kids play room (both in the finished basement). My kids know the drill, they just tip-toe very carefully over my project & straignten it if they mess it up.

No matter how bad my sewing room looks, the play room is always worse, so it's all good.

tjradj 02-22-2011 01:45 PM

Does the gasp have to be limited to the sewing room to qualify? LOL

vjengels 02-22-2011 01:49 PM

As a matter of fact.... I just let out a horrified gasp yesterday
!.. I'm working on a broken dishes quilt for a co-worker with fabric she gave me,( most of it is poly cotton, I wouldn't use, couldn't bear to throw it away.. it'll have memories for her.) anyway, what a huge mess! there's pieces of fabric strewn from one end to the other and starting to migrate into the hall way; I think I'll be done with the cutting this week, so I can clean up.

Purplequilter2011 02-22-2011 01:50 PM

I don't have a sewing room so my "creativity" gets to be spread all over the living room especially as a deadline approaches. My DH is particularly patient about it. My DS who is 6 doesn't always understand why he has to pick up his toys and I don't have to pick up mine. :)

ROFLMBO....cute! Now go pick up your toys..ehhehe

Rainy Day 02-22-2011 01:59 PM

I'd be more annoyed at SIL for her reaction! It is your home, she is a guest! Unless it was a gasp of "OMG, I love that creation"! :)

Jennifer22206 02-22-2011 02:06 PM

jaciqltznok - do I spy a part of a Dear Jane quilt in your photo?

And no, no one gasps at my area. It's not huge, but I do try to keep it semi tidy between projects.

auntmag 02-22-2011 02:09 PM

My husband admires my work and used to ask me to show it to everyone who stopped by. I finally told him to stop, I appreciated his pride in my work, but I would only show it to persons that I thought would appreciate it. As for my sewing room, I gasp every now and then and stop to pick up some of the clutter.
