Has anyone made a quilt of just ten inch square pieces?
I am playing with the idea of making a twin sized top with just ten inch square pieces. Has anyone done one like this? I think I saw such a quilt at a Cracker Barrel restaurant and really liked it. I have some sports fabric that has big designs, and I am going to make a quilt for a boy at a Boys' Ranch. I am just having trouble visualizing if the ten inch squares would look good or yucky.
So, if you had made such a thing, did it end up looking okay? I know it would depend on the fabric and all.... Off to google a bit and see if I find any such thing. Dina |
Missouri Star Quilt Company has a pattern Friendship Star. Very simple.

I have. I used 42 blocks so it was 60x70 before borders. I used 7 different fabrics and two borders.
To make one slightly bigger my dh made one that had 2 inch sashing between all the blocks. |
My thought is to lay it out first and see if you like it. Could be nice - - -

I did one that as large rectangles all the same size. Mostly from cut up fat quarters. I'd have to measure to get size. But it was mostly to practice on a new sitdown quilting machine. It's a fun quilt that I use a lot and is usually the one I take on airplane trips.
I think 10 inch squares could be great (also think of offseting them so you don't have to match seams)..... Then think about a fun quilting pattern to overlay them. And make sure you quilt close enough together..... |
There's no reason you can't. I think I'd offset them or sash them, or both. I like the sounds of doing both.

I made this quilt for my husband several years ago, it's his favorite.
It has 8" squares and a 6" border all the way around. https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...952-389898.JPG |
I think the 10" squares would be great, and sew up in a jiffy. I'd be sure to separate busy prints with TOTs or blenders. Might consider a "coin collection" style as an alternative (make the 10" squares into 5x10" rectangles) and separate the columns with a solid or TOT. Takes a lot less piecing time.

I made a quilt using a Moda cake layer pack and just stitched the squares together, added a border. It was soft pastel prints and it turned out very pretty and went together quickly.
|
I have not done it with 10" blocks, but I have with the 5" and I was very happy how it turned out. I set it on point just to give it a little extra something
|
I saw this video on You Tube several weeks ago. This looks like a great pattern for 10 inch squares. I have not made it but it is on my to-do list.

My Daughter made one last year. She alternated print squares with solid squares. It looked great.

I made a quilt with just 10" squares some time ago. It wasn't twin size, but it was gorgeous. It was a charity quilt, long ago given away. One of the fast/popular QOV patterns is all 10" blocks.
It will be a treasure, not just 'ok'! |
I have made several quilts for Lutheran World Relief using 11" squares with half inch seams, resulting in their regulation size of approximately 60 x 80. Borders could be added.
I am always surprised how nice they turn out. I think boys would like a quilt like that instead of one that looks "fussy". As a friend told me, her daughter wanted her high school graduation quilt to be one that did not look like a quilt. |

Dina I have made several quilts of just 10 in squares pieced together and they can be beautiful. I saw one of these in a shop years ago. I asked to purchase the exact fabric and it had completely sold out with customers wanting this quilt. It had no neutral blocks and many different but beautiful fabrics. The quilting was row by row and was a small feather pattern. I display several quilts in my home but this big block quilt gets the most attention. I use well coordinated fabric and a 8 inch border. A small border looks out of place |
my daughter wanted to make a quilt over her holiday break, she chose to do simple 12" squares in large print winter fabrics. it was her first quilt and it came out beautiful! Go for it!

I also think you could, especially with sports type fabric. Can't wait to see it! Hope you show us.

I have done quilts using 10" squares of denim and corduroy, alternating them row by row. The quilts were definitely utility quilts, and they were on the heavy side when they were finished. That was okay. Before my father-in-law passed away, he was confined to a hospital bed. He liked the weight of the quilts. They didn't seem to slide off. I tied them at each intersection with twelve strands of embroidery floss and used very thick batting. I remember using a bed sheet as backing.
I wonder what happened to them? I know they never seemed to wear out, even with washing in a regular machine and going through the dryer. I'm sure each of the quilts got washed and dried at least once a week. |
Thanks everyone. I am going to cut out squares today and play. I think I need 35 squares, plus a border. I have been itching to start cutting already, but, unfortunately, I am one of those "one quilt at a time" people, and my personal rules won't let me start one quilt until I finish another.
I am just about finished with the quilt I am on....will be squaring it and attaching binding today. (It is also a quilt for the Boys' Ranch.) I really appreciate all of the encouragement. :) In my mind's eye, it looks good, Dina |
Not 10” but my t shirt quilt was 15”. I suspect most T-shirt quilts are at least 10” blocks. Sounds very nice with an I spy sort of theme which yours sounds like. I did sash and border which really made it complete. Go for it.

I made a baby quilt using assorted 10 in. precut flannel squares. Some solids, stripes, dots, etc. I was very happy with the look.
|
Am I right in understanding you mean just sewing the squares together without any further cutting or piecing? It wouldn't appeal to me as a project to do or a finished quilt, but I quilted a vintage top that was made of just random squares of fabric. They had been set on point with a medium green as the setting triangles and border, and I thought the look was better than I expected it to be. The green seemed to bring it all together.
|
Absolutely no reason why you can't do this. And, it would be a great opportunity to do some different quilting in each block.

I volunteer at a friend's quilt shop once a week. (Used to work there, now volunteer). When a customer asks me such a question, I usually answer "It's your quilt." (emphasis on your). If you like it, it's fine. My daughter asked for one such quilt with football teams logos.

Ha! It turns out I can't us 12 inch squares anyway. I am making this from scraps of another quilt I made for the Boys' Ranch, and it turns out that the biggest scraps I have will make 9 inch squares. So I am now playing with a smaller square, which I am pretty sure will look good anyway, just not the mental image I had. Often my mental image doesn't end up working out.... :)
So I am now playing with 9 inch squares...48 instead of 35. I was going to try to get a pattern going, but it may be completely random now. I have 4 sports fabrics and 5 solid or blender fabrics. Still, should be fun to play with. Dina |

I made this as a donation quilt, using 10" squares. I don't have a photo of it after quilting, but this is the top all pieced.

I have made one that is only the flimsy right now and when I get is sandwiched and quilted I will take a picture and show you.

Dina, for the quilts for the boys ranch check out MSQC Big Wonky Star quilts--go together fast and can be very manly if right fabric choosen. My guild used this pattern for a mentoring project with high school FACS class of boys and girls--works great cause the fabric really defines it.

I have done 2 of these. 1 was 42 squares of Kaffe with a fleece back for someone going to Denver for surg. Got a thank you that said it was perfect for snuggling on the way home. The 2nd was a 21 pc. with fleece baking that I am using as a lap quilt.

I saw on in the new keepsake quilting catalog that arrived today, called the "sunrise stag kit".
|
I found this little ''book" 5.5" x 8.5" - Cutting Cake" by creeksidestiyches.com. it has four quilts in it plus ideas how to make changes to some of the blocks. I made one so far.
|
I guess I misunderstood the question!!! :l
|
My mom wanted to learn to make a quilt, and that's exactly what we did. No muss, no fuss, just sewed the big 10" squares together and then I quilted it for her. I wouldn't have picked the colors she did (we used scrap fabric, basically, and most of it was Wal-Mart quality!), but I made no comments and just let her do it. She decided to use an old sheet for the back because she didn't want to spend money on backing. It now sits on the wooden trunk at the foot of my bed and reminds me of her every day. Not the prettiest quilt in my house, but the one with the most meaning. :)
