Invisible Zippers work well for pillows. Here's a link to a tutorial.

I have put many zippers in cushion covers. If you are using a top piece, a bottom piece and then a piece that goes around the middle or edge of the pillow, you would cut two strips (with seam allowance so that the finished size is the same as the rest of the strip), sew the zipper between the two strips and then attach it to the original strip and sew it to the top and bottom pieces.

For throw pillows, I do the "envelope" type using two pieces on the back, overlapping them approximately two inches and use velcro or not.

I have made lots of pillows and the envelope style is the easiest and looks real nice. You can even use a couple pieces of velcro back on the overlaped opening if you would like. Just don't skimp on the back pieces so they overlap at least 5 or 6 inches. I also put cottonballs in the corners inside to take up room that the pillow does not fill. Good luck

Ever since I found out how to do envelope style I no longer use zippers. They are so easy! You can also use buttons for the openings.
