Have you ever fallen in love with fabric you don't want to cut it?

I have fallen in love with a few purchases of fabric I just can't bare to cut. One is just "quilted" using a walking foot.. yes, it is more like a blanket.. but some of the fabric is just BEAUTIFUL !

PolkaBabe 04-04-2012 07:18 AM

Of course I have & I have alot of them. However at the same time I don't know what I want to do with some of them.

DebraK 04-04-2012 07:29 AM

I have some waiting for just the right project, then I will have no problem cutting it.

OKLAHOMA PEACH 04-04-2012 07:34 AM

I love pretty fabric! Have a few pieces, just because they are so pretty, no plans to use, just so pretty. Maybe stretch and put on a frame and hang, yes maybe so.

chairjogger 04-04-2012 07:55 AM

This is where I miss the facebook like button.. agree.. have held onto fabric and years .. 5 years later.. the perfect project came up. stretched on a frame.. hmmm.. never thought of that ! how fun ! Thanks for posting !

jaciqltznok 04-04-2012 08:13 AM

oh...like the 300+ civil war FQ's, or the 200+ 30's repro FQ's or the 150+ Asian FQ's....yep..collections....

Sew N Tune 04-04-2012 09:52 AM

My mother has a whole room full of those. Love ya Mom - LOL

MaryMo 04-04-2012 10:00 AM

collections are so much fun to add to ... and yes, when the right project comes along, it will be so much fun to make. No, I'm not a hoarder but a collector ... of fabrics, of projects, of ideas, etc.

Rose S. 04-04-2012 10:11 AM

I am just glad I am not the only one...the ones I find hard to cut are my batiks....been collecting a few along for years. I am trying to get up the nerve to start using them. I have used a few in baby quilts for my granddaughter and for my nephew...but that is it. and not very many at that.

Pat625 04-04-2012 10:34 AM

OH YES!!! I don't feel so crazy anymore!!! I do think that maybe the perfect project may make me cut it, but even if it doesn't as long as it gives me pleasure to own and look at it, I guess that's OK too

fireworkslover 04-04-2012 10:43 AM

I've heard some people say thy'll use a large piece of it like a panel and include pieced blocks around it. I have not done this, but think it's a good idea.

Jingle 04-04-2012 10:43 AM

I have some too. I have cut large pieces and sewed them with a sashing and borders to make them for our bed. Those I keep for me.

SouthPStitches 04-04-2012 11:14 AM

Yes, when you find that piece of fabric that truly speaks to you, it's hard putting the rotary cutter to it. On the other hand, if you use it for a project, it has fulfilled its destiny rather than sitting among the hopefuls in the stash/hoard. I've also loved a fabric so much I've ran out and bought more of it, after I've used the original yardage up. Or bought the same thing in a slightly different color scheme and not known it until I've gotten it home (no wonder I liked it).

Quiltaddict 04-04-2012 12:53 PM

All the time.

calla 04-04-2012 01:15 PM

Guilty, the hydgrenga fabric from 6-7 yrs ago and the lilac flower (Martha Pullen) one too.............needs to be something really special

annie123 04-04-2012 01:55 PM

Yes i have been there. There is a pattern called "Just Can't Cut It' that might be of help.

Krisb 04-04-2012 02:32 PM

Or the sidelights pattern, which I have fabric for. When I get to it. Someday

Krisb 04-04-2012 02:35 PM

Or the sidelights pattern, which I have fabric for. When I get to it. Someday. The fabric I am most unable to cut was dyed by my sister for me. Logically, I know that fabric just sitting on the shelf isn't bringing any joy to anyone, but emotionally, I just can't take a cutter to it.

RkayD 04-04-2012 03:15 PM

Surely! Thats how a stash starts... =)

auntpiggylpn 04-04-2012 04:43 PM

I have my favorites too! The ones that are too beautiful to cut. These lovely pieces have a special place on my shelves, separated from the other fabrics that too are pretty but won't feel like I am cutting off my arm when I cut them for a quilt. They get special attention too. I often take the yardages out, unfold them, admire them, pet them, let them get some fresh air and then refold them and place them back on the shelf. I often will just glance over at them and give them a loving look when I am working on a project. They will probably still be uncut when I leave this earth. They quite possibly could line my coffin or maybe they will be wrapped around me mummy style!!!

hperttula123 04-04-2012 05:05 PM

Oh, ya. I think alot of us have a few fabrics like that. I have started using some of the ones I've been hanging onto for so many years now. It's very hard. Some, I just look at, fold back up and stick it back on the shelf. :)

But. . . it brings joy to me!!!!

DeMaris 04-04-2012 05:46 PM

I have way more than I need of fabric like that. I am going to start selling it off soon. I figure that if someone wants to make something out of it it will go to a better home and be used...LOL. Lets see what I actually part with...LOL.

jemma 04-04-2012 07:08 PM

Can't wait to see your posting in the Thrift shop/Yard sale category!!!

irishrose 04-04-2012 07:14 PM

I have one that I started to use in a mystery quilt and just couldn't - it's just too pretty to use when the end product isn't known. I will cut it when I can use a pattern that will showcase it. Warm Wishes, maybe.

Stitch124 04-05-2012 03:24 AM

I just bought some beautiful fabric for a wall hanging. It's actually in fat quarters. They are folded into triangles to stack and then they are tied together to for a star. I hate to break up the star of fat quarters in order to cut up ... but the wall hanging will look so pretty! Now if I could just learn to quilt!

liese 04-05-2012 03:29 AM

Fabric you love and don't want to cut?

I'm finding I make a much better collector than a cutter of fabrics. I just love looking at them, touching them, folding and re-folding, etc. Guess I would get more cut and sewn if I spent less time looking at everyone else's work on this board. LOL

TacoMama 04-05-2012 03:31 AM

Yes, there are some that are just too pretty to cut!

orangeroom 04-05-2012 03:36 AM

I fell madly in love with a particular pattern when dh and I were in a LQS. I stated "We need to get out of here right now." As we were driving away he asked why we had to leave so quickly. I informed him that I wanted to buy the whole bolt (16 yds), and had to leave before I did. He said I could buy anything that I wanted to buy. So I returned in a few days during a shop hop with my ds(10 yrs old at the time). He carried the bolt of fabric for me and he went right to the purchase counter. The employee stated that he needed to go to the cutting counter and my ds stated "No we don't. We're taking the whole thing." The woman behind the counter was surprised and shocked. Have used it as a backing a couple of times. Still absolutely LOVE it!!!

You may not realize it, but this is how a "stash" is born.

Yooper32 04-05-2012 04:31 AM

Some people's kids just dont' understand, but some fabric IS too precious to cut into.

ellenmg 04-05-2012 04:46 AM

I had a beautiful piece I got when I first got back into quilting. Purple, green, yellow, with a criss-cross yellow running through it. I just COULD NOT bring myself to defile it by cutting into it. Finally, last year I steeled myself and put it into an Ricky Tims' Harmonic Convergence. And I am glad I got brave enough to do it. I used a good bit of it so it really shows.
I now have a number of those "Waiting for the perfect design" fabrics....What's a gal to do???

This reminds me of a photo I saw on a blog (http://www.purlbee.com/swatch-portra...portraits.html ) . A wall decorated with embroidery hoops with pieces of gorgeous fabric stretched in them. Different sizes, big prints, small prints....unbelievably gorgeous in a sewing room.

solstice3 04-05-2012 05:29 AM

Oh yes! And DH questions why I dsbuy more....because I can...hehehe

Mary Britton 04-05-2012 05:30 AM

Yep! Bought a "Quilt for the Cure" kit in 2005 with beautiful roses. Could not bear to cut into the rose fabric. Finally in 2010 decided to do the pieced blocks with the other fabrics and see how that went. When I finally got around to cutting the rose fabric I found that there was not enough room to fussy cut all the squares of roses without piecing some corners. I was very disapointed! Quilt was finally finished (handquilted) about a month ago. It is lovely if you don't look too close at the rose blocks.

Too funny as I can relate. There is a book out called Just Can't cut it but it hasn't helped me move forward...lol.
