I have made a couple for myself now. Sometimes I feel guilty spending the money for me. Now, I've got wall hangings to be hung, and no where to hang them. So, they just pile up and sit in the closet. :(
I've made one for our bed and a lap quilt for each DH and myself, one for the guest room. I have fabrics for another quilt for each of the beds.
Oh Yes! The problem is I always make for others first.......I received a quilt from a friend for Christmas one year....it is one of my most cherished posessions.I love it....it must have taken her hours....pineapple quilt.
Me, too! I've been quilting for 11 years, and 2 years ago my husband asked me if I knew anybody who made quilts. I couldn't figure out what he was getting at, but he said we needed one for our bed, and he was just wondering if I knew anybody that would do it.
That did it! I made us a quilt. I've since made us a couple more.

use your fabric and see the happiness it will bring to her face
you can always keep a piece and nake yourself something |
I just made one for myself. We have several around the house for different uses (bedspreads, annual anniversary quilts for my husband, petspreads/quilts for furniture) but this one is 'mine' for when I'm sitting in a recliner & reading. I have made a couple of wallhangings we're keeping (complex paper-piecing &/or art quilts). All others find homes: family & friends' gifts, or who might request a quilt project. I'm gifting some that are perfect for charitable causes too.
We can only 'use' so many and storing them is like having fancy china that's never used. May as well enjoy them or be sure someone does! |
I know that shop--beautiful Moda fabrics! Glad you're making one for you!
Once, on a Shop Hop, I found a Take 5 kit in animal prints that I loved, so I bought it and made it for myself and I use it in the family room when I am watching TV in cold weather.

(duh, that's the reason I bought it. right? - at least I'm pretty sure that was my intention when I fell in love with it.) SO.. DMIL was here from Indiana last week. (sweating her booty off in S.E. Texas!) I took her to a quilt shop in Old Town Spring. It's stacked 3 and 4 bolts high throughout 2 houses. ALL Moda fabric. http://grsfabrics.com/ Well.. I made a decision. I bought 3 charm packs and 2 cuts of coordinating fabric. I've given myself express permission to CUT this fabric and MAKE something of it! Come hell or high water, I'm determined to make a lap quilt for myself. It feels kinda good to assert myself to do one for ME for a change. :) Code:
Of course...now I'm feeling a little guilty and selfish. UGH! What a complex. |
When I first got the quilting bug I tool a reversable quilt class and actually finished it. My husband who is now deceased loved it and it has been forever know Boots quilt. One of his daughters really wants it but I refuse to give it up. When I die I want it to be burried with me. It reminds me of him. I told her I would make her one but she wants that one. To bad, it's mine. I have many other kits and fabric that I like but have them to give to other family members. Maby one day when I retire I will get some made.
Yes. I made a queen size quilt, all applique in yellows and purples, and loved it so much I decided I was keeping it. The label says "This one's for Me". We make quilts for family and friends and for donations. We deserve to have a quilt or quilts for ourselves.
Yeah! Another quilt shop to explore close to home, thanks for the link! Been thinking about visiting Old Town Spring for a few months - just need to go - thanks again.
I've mostly ever made baby blankets/quilts for grandkids, neices, nephews, ect. Now i'm actually teaching myself to peice quilt and I decided I need to make at least one for me. So while I have a number of tops done waiting to be quilted, the Bargello im currently working on, beggining stage, is for me, me, me! :-D
The very first pieced quilt I ever made is on MY bed. I love it. smile....
Hard to cut into the really pretty stuff, but since seems like I end up w/ a little extra fab or a few extra squares, that can go to a small wallhanging to decorate the room, still get to enjoy what normally gets given-a-way.
Did make one for another use not long ago, but have used twice... so guess I get to keep, for a car throw :) Definately make something just for you!! |
Only 1 and that is from a swap on another forum. I have 3 or 4 (gee, I forget how many) more quilts from swaps I need to put together. Other quilts keep getting in my way!
Old Town Spring is great. I used to live close to there and loved it but I haven't been in a while but would love to go back
I have fabric, but haven't cut it yet. Too many other quilts to make & finish.

It's definitely going to be more appreciated now that it's not sitting on a shelf in my sewing room! :) |
I must do things backwards because I kept my first because it was practice! And it was bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have lots of quilts I have kept. I have made many quilts for family and friends but If I like a quilt pattern I make it up for myself unless someone needs a quilt. I find it hard to give mine away except for family because I hand piece, and hand quilt them so it's like a baby by the time I get it done.
I have only made one that I gave to my niece when she was a young girl. Everything else is for me because when I ask people if they would like a quilt, I get wishy-washy answers. So, they are all mine! I do make quilts for charities though, I can't hog all the fabric to myself! :)
I made myself a beautiful scrappy hearts quilt, that I custom fit to my bed. 110" x 112". I put it on my bed, took a picture, and refolded it, and put it away. Make me a quilt? Yep, easy. Make me use said quilt that I worked so hard on, not so much.
I am in the process of making a mystery quilt and it is the first one for my bed!!!! I have been quilting since 1989 decided it was time for one for me. :D
I always give all my quilts away. This year I made one for me and love it. I do not feel guilty.
I started one two years ago for myself. I messed up the machine quilting so I quit working on it. I should get it out and finish it but am so discouraged with myself for the mess I made after I did such a great job putting the top together.
I made one for myself by accident! It is not quilted yet, but the piecing is done. I had started collecting rich browns just because I loved them. One day I realized they were the same colors as my dogs (Brittanys) so I made a cream and brown log cabin out of them. I now have my very own Brittany Lap quilt. When it is done, it will be all mine!!
And no, I don't feel guilty at all. |
In a word yes.
Not yet, but I am collecting various purple fabrics for a purple and black Cathedral quilt for myself. Currently in process of making a series of wallhangings for myself.
I have started several for myself. They all went to "visit" someone else though. Have two UFOs sitting here and one on the frame that are supposed to be mine. We will see what they tell me when they are finished. Will they stay or will they go?
I made a Christmas Strip Quilt, and I just finished a Flannel Rail Fence with two batts because I don't have heat in my bedroom.
I am still in process of making quilts for others and like you, just can't give me permission to make one for myself (LOL). I too have some fabric I can't seem to cut into - wonder what that is really all about. You need to make something for yourself for a change.
I think we put so much planning and buying that letting go is hard after you do all that and then not to know if they would really like it and take care of it like you would. I take a lot of pride in buying and holding my fabric. I like to take it out of the bag and it on a table where I can see it alot and hopefully one day I will get the courage to make something out of it then it's like would he or she really like it and would that tell me the truth. That seems to be my thoughts and delima about giving my creations away.
Yes. The first 10 years I made quilts, they were all give aways. In the last two years, I decided to make wall hangings or other assorted small projects for relatives. I am dedicating the rest of my time to making some king size bed quilts for myself. Hubby says it is about time. I felt guilty for a while but I now that I have a could of tops to quilt, not so much.
Nope - always give them away either for Project Linus or other charities and a few as family gifts. But when I am old, grey and wanting to finish up my Bucket List, I will make one for myself...........oops, old? grey haired? Yep, I am falling way behind as I have not done one thing for me on my Bucket List. lol
have fun making yourself a quilt
I kept one small wall hanging for me. I had another one but my DD claimed it as hers, my DH has 4 from me, my mom has about 9, my Nana has 10 or so, friends, other family have them, but the one I intended on for me was recently claimed by DH who said he needed a new cuddle quilt for the couch.
One day maybe. |
We can make things for ourselves??? ;-)
I'm also trying to start on one for myself.
