yourself?

I've made many quilts.
Quilts for parents, in-laws, family, new babies, friends, charities, etc.

I have tons of fabric that I absolutely love and for some reason there are a few pieces that can't bring myself to CUT.
(duh, that's the reason I bought it. right? - at least I'm pretty sure that was my intention when I fell in love with it.)

SO.. DMIL was here from Indiana last week.
(sweating her booty off in S.E. Texas!)
I took her to a quilt shop in Old Town Spring.
It's stacked 3 and 4 bolts high throughout 2 houses.
ALL Moda fabric.

http://grsfabrics.com/

Well.. I made a decision.
I bought 3 charm packs and 2 cuts of coordinating fabric.
I've given myself express permission to CUT this fabric and MAKE something of it!
Come hell or high water, I'm determined to make a lap quilt for myself.

It feels kinda good to assert myself to do one for ME for a change. :)

Code:

Of course...now I'm feeling a little guilty and selfish. UGH! What a complex.
Anyone else ever have/had a problem making something for yourself?

Jim's Gem 06-28-2011 07:25 PM

Yes, I have made myself a couple of quilts. No need to feel guilty!!!! You need to make something for yourself!

huntannette 06-28-2011 07:26 PM

i always start out making it for myself...but thy always end up with someone else!!! lol

mzmama 06-28-2011 07:27 PM

I make them for myself until someone comes along that needs just that quilt. I know that if I like like it, so will they. Right?

JanTx 06-28-2011 07:33 PM

I bought a kit of fat quarters in blacks and creams that I WILL MAKE FOR MYSELF. I promise me. So there! Now I just need to get the rest of the things I'm working on finished so I can really do that. I took a basket and put it on the table in my dining/sewing room of the things I really need to finish before I start anything else. So far, making good progress - then me, me, me! (Well, unless I need to start getting those Christmas projects moving along .... )

tammy cosper 06-28-2011 07:39 PM

Thats what I do with those fabrics, I just don't want to cut. Cause obviously I got them because I like looking at them.lol

babyfireo4 06-28-2011 07:43 PM

I plan to keep the very first quilt I ever started (its still not finished lol) mostly because there are more flaws than any other I've made ;) There's also some black and white fabric I have that I want a lap quilt out of...... no one's claimed it yet so here's hopin!

(When a family member wants me to make em a quilt I have em go through my stash and pick out 3 or 4 colors they like and go from there. That way I don't have to guess if they like it or not.)

raedar63 06-28-2011 07:50 PM

Not yet,but I just bought all batiks at a LQS to make me one. I am nervous though I have NEVER spent so much. I usually do scrap quilts.

blueangel 06-28-2011 07:51 PM

I have made for everybody, but the last one I kept for me.

cmputerdazed 06-28-2011 08:00 PM

I have the same problem, no I have not saved one for me. I do however have two that were made for me by my grandmother.

auntpiggylpn 06-28-2011 08:10 PM

Nope! Everything I make is gifted to someone. I did buy a wall hanging quilt kit this past weekend at a quilt show. It is definately my taste and I know that nobody will appreciate it as much as me, so it is MINE!! Now, to get it put together....

maine ladybug 06-28-2011 08:16 PM

Yes, I have made a couple of quilts that are mine. When someone askes who it is for, I just say "ME" and leave it there.

pab58 06-28-2011 08:25 PM

I've never made a quilt for myself. :-( Someday I will do just that!!! Maybe I will make an appliqued quilt JUST for me!!! :-D

irishrose 06-28-2011 08:38 PM

I have mine cut out, but life and deadlines of other quilts gets in the way of piecing it.

Mamawcj 06-28-2011 08:42 PM

Yes, I made a lap quilt for me. My DH calls it my security blanket because I always take it with me when we travel and it's on my chair when we are home. I am also working on one for our bed, but it will be a while before I get it finiahed because I only work on it when we go camping.

Painiacs 06-28-2011 10:10 PM

Just made me a queen sized quilt!!

kidmenot43 06-28-2011 10:17 PM

I usually buy more than enough fabric to do a quilt. The left overs end up going into a scrappy kind of quilt that ends up on one of the beds at our house. Haven't really planned a quilt out just for me. But maybe it is time to start looking at patterns that I like and plan to make one. Thanks for the motivation

sarahrachel 06-29-2011 02:28 AM

I can't make myself give any away (granted I only finished 2 and one of them is only as big as a pillowcase) but my mom did that a lot. She made quilts for the fun of it, and once she ran out of people to give them to, she kept them in an old suitcase in case someone would need them. But we had about 4 or 5 in our camper that she made for that reason, and as we've gotten rid of the camper, they're in our house as they were a little too beat up to give away. Now they're great for winter time when it's just a little cooler than comfortable. And let me tell you, the cats love them! But go ahead and splurge and make one just for you everyone's allowed to be selfish once in a while!

mcdaniel023 06-29-2011 03:19 AM

I made me one...because I was jealous of DH and Katie cat all cuddled under theirs during the cold winter. I actually have a few I kept.

emerald46 06-29-2011 03:20 AM

That is exactly why I haven't cut my OBWs yet. Got 2 beautiful pieces of fabric that I just love. I play with the mirrors and design like crazy but cutting them alludes me. DH says I should just hire someone to cut for me..lol.
Love the avatar. We've made several wonderful lap quilts with the flannel I got from you.

katier825 06-29-2011 03:45 AM

Oh yes! I've got a couple that are completed just for me. Most of my WIPs are also for me. Selfish, aren't I? LOL I often have to put mine aside to make gifts. I do a lot of gift giving! I'm trying to get back to them. I've only got one planned as a Christmas quilt, so the pressure is off this year.

sueisallaboutquilts 06-29-2011 03:50 AM

Loved reading your cute story!!! :)
I think I have one or two that are mine but that's it lol

mcar 06-29-2011 04:00 AM

Does anyone do or make something just for you??? But you can !!! and should. There is nothing like sleeping under a quilt you made yourself! I enjoy my "work" so much that I cannot give it all away.

Tinker Tots 06-29-2011 04:03 AM

Ok I guess I am weird I guess I am really weird to y'all. I have made about 12, and the only one that has left my house was to my daughter. I just finished another one, and was thinking about giving to my niece for her wedding NEXT WEEK, I just can't let them go, they are my babies. What is wrong with me? I love and admire and I think I am scared they won't appreciate the hard work, so I keep them, so maybe one day hummmm when I get enough I can slowly let them go. I guess I am selfish.(THEY ARE ALL FOR ME).:)

quiltingme 06-29-2011 04:41 AM

Yes - I have made two quilts just for me. However, the latest one - my sis has designs on it, so it may end up at her house... we'll see. :)

reginalovesfabric 06-29-2011 04:50 AM

I actually have 6 that are called "MINE" One is a I spy Santa with a big fabric door panel of Santa appliqued on the back, my daughter wanted it an I told her she would have to wait until I left ths earth

atvrider 06-29-2011 04:55 AM

I have a hard time parting with the quilts I make!

munchkinmama 06-29-2011 04:57 AM

The reason I began to quilt is because I LOVE quilts. I make them for myself mostly. I have made quilts for immediate family and very close friends. From now on they are all mine unless I want to make one for someone else - hasn't hit me yet. I would like a collection of different traditional styles in my house. The grandkids love to cuddle in them when they are here.

Joan Dickson 06-29-2011 04:59 AM

I finally finished a Quillow for myself after making many, many for the grandkids, etc. Love it!!!

Raggiemom 06-29-2011 04:59 AM

I've made a couple for our house. I can't say they're specifically mine though as I do share them with DH and the cats.

Well, I think I just did the opposite! i made a top that was intended as a gift for a guy. It came out so nice, and i really don't think a guy would appreciate that hard work... maybe I'll make him a simple one and keep this one!

dinlauren 06-29-2011 05:26 AM

I'm so glad to hear Old Town Spring has quilt shop still. I haven't been there in ages but will make it a point to stop there on my way through Houston this summer. Hope you make YOUR quilt soon.

Val in IN 06-29-2011 05:48 AM

I've made quilts and clothing and loads of things for everyone but me. I'm seriously trying to get my ufo's done and dedicate myself to do ONE quilt for ME.

misscarol 06-29-2011 05:59 AM

I did make a quilt for ME, but everytime I want to use it my husband has it! I don't know why he doesn't use the one I made for him. Silly Hubby!!!

I promise myself I will do a quilt for me when I finish downsizing my house, get the yard (2 acres) in shape. finish other projects and oh yes, load the dishwasher.

Mariposa 06-29-2011 06:06 AM

I just bought a pack of 10" squares of the new dogwood prints fabrics. These will be used in a quilt for me! Now I need to figure an easy pattern to best show the fabrics! :)

vickig626 06-29-2011 06:14 AM

I met a lady who only makes quilts for herself. Her house has quilts hanging everywhere. She also teaches classes. Not sure why she does this.

My DH kept saying "you've never made ME one" so I did... now he's quiet about me giving so many away. LOL

joyce888 06-29-2011 06:15 AM

Yes did my first "for me" a couple of months ago. Just finished a king-size top for my bed yesterday.
