I've made several baby quilts with the alternating snowball/9-patch blocks on point. It's fast (cut it out one night, sew it the second night and quilt it the third night)and easy. Of course, each of them were made with a different style of fabric.

Or is each one a unique creation?

I have made several log cabin memory quilts as gifts but no two were exactly alike.

I made a French Roses quilt 4 years ago for my mother and obviously forgot what it was like making it. I've gone ahead and am doing one for myself now. The first one was twin sized and this is an oversized queen. I'll probably have this quilted on a LA. since it's so big and since I have arthritis in my hands.

Yes many times as gifts.

We've repeated Potato Chip, Yellow Brick Road, Friendship Star, Turning Twenty, Alternating 4-Patch, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Rail Fence. The only time we didn't change the colors was on the Friendship Stars; they were for 2 of our nieces who are cousins and best friends, and they like to get things alike.

Of course, those are all beginner-type patterns. I guess we should move out of our comfort zone a bit. It is nice to be familiar enough with a pattern that you can make one up pretty quickly.

Merryquilter - the potato chip quilt is a simple two-fabric quilt where you frame a Fabric A square with Fabric B strips, and vice-versa. There are cutting instructions here:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-35373-1.htm#764321

We have finished three of them. If you click on my name and look at my topics, one of them is "Cooper's quilt." Also our first two finished quilts were Potato Chips.

I've made a few quilted binder covers, but each had a different fabric and used different quilting on them.

Momsmurf 04-09-2011 08:32 PM

I've made the same quilt more than once, and each is original and different from the prior simply because the fabric makes it so..........plus I probably screwed up in different places on each!

CMARAS1234 04-09-2011 10:32 PM

If I am making a GIFT quilt( that i really like) I alway cut two, and then later I sew the second one to keep.

4MTS... your fabulous baby quilt... could you give me the name please.... I would appreciate that... thank you.

katigirl 04-09-2011 11:16 PM

Disappearing 9 patch. Did a d9p all shook up recently and had many others at the retreat trying it also. :)

Never heard of potato chip pattern, what is it like?

Wesing explained the pattern. It only takes two colors, and it makes a nice baby quilt or lap quilt. It really is fun to make, and you don't get bored with it.

[quote=Maybe1day]Yes : I have twin beds in one of my guest bedrooms and so I made two matching quilts for this room.

Oops! This post reminded me that I have done other duplicates on purpose. It's just been so long since my kids were little enough to share rooms & bunks, I completely forgot. Old-timers ?? But yes when my boys were little a matched pair of quilts for their bunk beds - which are still on the same bunks actually, just nobody uses them & they are in the back corner of the basement bunkroom. Then when the girls shared a room and the same passion for pink & purple, I painted their room white & DH airbrushed pink & purple stripes. I made matching pink/purple reversible comforters, dust ruffles, curtains, etc... Those are still in a cupboard also. I'm a packrat, that is starting to get ready to start parting w/some of this stuff. I've been waiting for the day when I'd want to use them for the rest of the g'kids I guess.

I've made more than one of a pattern but it's never the same quilt!!! Different fabrics, change the size of the pieces, add/remove sashing/border etc.

sarahconner 04-10-2011 08:00 AM

Yes, I h have made the "Trip Around the World" pattern 3 times, just becuz I like it

Marvel 04-10-2011 08:10 AM

At times I have been known to make about three of the same design for gifts.

weasier22 04-10-2011 08:16 AM

Right now my project is making 6 quilts for my cousins grandchildren...they are all the same pattern, but making it in different fabrics didn't make it boring at all. Each has a look of their own.

quiltinNsmilin 04-10-2011 11:09 AM

I give almost everything I make as gifts -( In 20 years of quilting, I have one king and 2 lap quilts.) I have used several patterns multiple times - Yellow Brick Road, Disappearing 9-patch and
Bento Box - since I can just make them without the pattern in front of me. The first two are much faster, the third great, tho, when I have a lot of batik left overs. Sometimes, how much time I have to complete the gift determines which pattern I make.

i use the 4 patch pattern from downy quilts for kids all the time, did the one they sent & a couple more frm my stash & sent those out,.. made a couple more for project linus...

made it w/horsey fabric for oldest dgd to take to kindergarden for naptime, w/a matching pillow.

made it with some size variations for my friend michele's sil who was dying of cancer... 5" blocks rather than 6" to accomadate a particular fabric, just made more blocks to make it longer & wider... fused some photos on it, zig zaged a "frame" around them... done in 1 day... i was stunned when i went to the wake & they had it draped over the lower half of the casket & then buried it with her...that was the most humbled i've been in a long, long time.

working on another variation using the lorilie nursing panel for a friend of mine who passed her boards..the panel cuts up to rectangles, and i am collecting fabrics to make the 4 patchs...even if they are rectangular rather than square...

youngest dd has been accepted to umass lowell... we will be going up there in the next couple weekends to ck out the campus... dad the worrier is concerned because lowell is a tough town... i hope to get to the bookstore and get her a t'shirt, so i can get an idea of the colors... then she will be getting one for her dorm room.... maybe they still make those scrubs with the school logo on them like they did years ago & i can get some for the large patches in this pattern...

her 2 best friend are also going there, so i am afraid i will wind up making 3 of them... hence the easy pattern!

thank god those don't have to be done until end of summer.... i'm so far behind now, i think i'm first!

What an honor!! She must have treasured that quilt! You brought her a great deal of comfort and you should be proud of that. Thank you for doing that for her.

I always say I'm going to make the same pattern more than once, but in different colors, but I never do.....

Sierra 04-10-2011 02:30 PM

I made a quilt called "Yosemite Dreams" which showed (my version of) El Capitan, Half Dome, the Valley and the River, with a red wood on one side and Bridal Veil Falls on the other, complete with bears and rock climbers in the distance and squirrels up close on a wall.

It was my first landscape quilt. I made another much better one. If I find a lull in my life I'm going to make it again, hopefully even better. They were both queen size. Each was truly an adventure.

Jennifer22206 04-10-2011 02:32 PM

I've made several of the same pattern, but it's super rare for me to use the same colors in the same pattern again and again.

I actually got sick of doing 9 patches so I used the fabrics chosen for my last Blooming to make a Lone Star. ;-) The star is done but it's in my UFO pile (for over 4 years  ) while I ponder the setting.

I've made several RainyDay quilts - again, just testing how the the different fabrics can work.

I don't ever use "collections" of fabrics, or charm packs or layer cakes. Way too matchy matchy for me. I much prefer making my own fabric choices. Totally.

I have a fabulous baby quilt I make all the time because it's perfect and graphic and ignores whatever 'decor' the parents might have in mind. ;-) And I always, always know I have the fabrics needed on hand.

With the exception of the baby quilt (which can look similar even though each has different fabrics), I consider each one unique.

Can you tell us what the pattern for the baby quilt is that you use? It's nice to know there's one that ignores whatever the decor is. And a pic please.

I have very few patterns I make twice...that boredom thing. But I have a couple I will make when in a hurry, cuz they're fast & easy.

Judie 04-10-2011 05:05 PM

One time I made the same quilt 3 times...

I made it once for a fund raising quilt for our Navy reunion, I made the second one concurrently with the first one because I didn't want to give one that I loved and not have one... So I figured I could make two quilts at the same time without feeling like I was repeating myself and getting bored...

I got the two finished and I was so pleased with my self.. Only trouble was I asked my husband how he liked it. His answer was 'well, it should be Red, White and Blue for the Navy." I had used Burgandy, Navy and Cream... He did not like the 'Americana' look..

So I made another one which was the true Red, White and Blue we all love. Lesson learned, don't ask.. he will tell you what he thinks! Then promptly sold the americana one for $600!

What a great way to express the sentiment!

I love this also. A great sentiment!

Yes just in different colors

IBQUILTIN 04-11-2011 09:55 AM

I have mmade several from the same pattern, but they never look the same

Joan Gaddis 04-11-2011 11:38 AM

yes but because it was easy and fast. and because it was requested ----- trip around the world

Jo Mama 04-13-2011 06:00 AM

Yes, when I was a quilt pattern tester - in different colors or sizes but the same pattern.

Jacqueline m l 04-13-2011 05:56 PM

Yes

lclang 04-13-2011 08:00 PM

I often make a whole pile of blocks and then put them together in different ways so the quilts are not alike but the blocks are the same. I like a variety of ways to set blocks.
