Have You Ever Made a Second One?
 

I designed this one that I'll include a picture of and I like the design but there are so many mistakes on it that I called it Technical Difficulties and I really think I could do it better now. You may not see the mistakes in the picture, but they are legion.

Has anyone ever repeated a quilt because they just wanted to see if they could do it better the second time around? I would do it in different colours.

What do you think? Waste of time? Move on to something new? Or try to improve my technique?

Although the quilt is beautiful, I personally would not be tempted to do a second one. Maybe a different design using the same techniques, but not a duplicate. Just my opinion......

Congrats on the red ribbon! I think the wonderful aspect of our craft is we are welcome to create what inspires us! Working to improve a technique is quite inspirational to me.

As far as doing another one - if you want to, why not?

Sometimes one has to prove something to oneself, and that's the only criteria needed for doing something.

But I would be willing to bet that you would make changes as you went - even if the original intent was "to just do it better" the second time. :)

Yup. I'm doing that now with a quilt pattern, and doing it in completely different fabric choices and it looks different. It's one of those patterns where the 1/4" seam has to be exact each and every time, so the practice is good for me. And there is a quilt I made for my daughter where I didn't read the pattern correctly so every bock was messed up, but no one saw it but me. I'd like to do another just to prove to myself that, yes I can read.

I am going to go just a little farther here and talk about art. Now remember, this is relative to my personal opinion. This, to me, is more in the art category. Don't you agree? Now looking into an finished art painting of many artist's of the past. They often made pictures more than once. Sometimes on the same canvas. Right? I don't find it unusual to want to tweak a design so it is just right to your level of satisfaction. Also, we sewers know when we repeat something over and over, it gets easier and becomes more natural in the execution. I say, you go girl. Not because I see any flaws, but because you feel a need to advance on to a higher ground.
I admire those qualities myself and aspire to work at those pinnacles of excellence. I just wish I had the time and skill set to go there myself.

By the way, did you name your pattern/finished piece?

I agree. I've 3 partial Dear Janes to finish. I'm thinking, though of starting from scratch, and finishing this time, to make another. I've learned so much since then and am more confident to make a better quilt.

This is a beautiful quilt and one that I would not try to duplicate. I would try another quilt that uses the same techniques so you could tone up some of your skills. I would find it to frustrating to try to duplicate.

I think it is amazing. But I am usually doing very simple quilt patterns so to me it’s awesome. You should go ahead and do it until you accomplish your goals. Then and only then will you be satisfied.

I would not hesitate to use the same design to make another quilt. You don't intent to make a copy, you're going to make a new version. I've made several quilts that were "first versions" to learn and try techniques, and I prefer to finish them and give them away so I don't waste the fabric. But I know when making them that they are a learning experience.

I've already made two complete "Affairs of the Heart" quilts and have 12 blocks for another (need to put them together) and now I'm planning on doing a fourth. Each one has used different techniques for the applique and embroidery. And they all look quite different when finished.
