It's caused by loosely wound thread and it got hung on something.

sassey 10-22-2011 06:29 AM

Yes I also have a brother it happens when the bobbin is wound too loose or if you put bobbin in wrong also once when machine got partially unthreaded you can tell I have had my share of this oproblem

Sierra 10-22-2011 06:36 AM

Old thread can do this also. I started using my (long gone) Mom's threads and this sort of thing was the result. After the "old thread" incidents I had some problems again with new thread. I talked to my repair man and he told me to use "Bottom Line" -- it is thinner, stronger, and works like a charm. If I have trouble now its because my machine has been moved and the settings are whacky. Luck of the Irish... I walked into a store and they were discontinuing their Bottom Line and I bought about 30 colors for half price!!!!

Stitchit123 10-22-2011 07:23 AM

My brother says its either a bent needle or your needle is in wrong-He is a sewing machine repairman So check your needle

Grandma Duzzi 10-22-2011 07:34 AM

Unfortunately it has happened to me. Reasons - improperly wound bobbin, not the correct bobbin (I didn't realize that all plastic bobbins didn't fit all machines) and/or old thread. It too cost me $ to find this out! Live and learn I guess!

hudgoddess 10-22-2011 07:39 AM

Bad Bobbin. Don't do it again.
Hope you punished by rewinding onto a bobbin that was willing to play nice.

Linda - K. 10-22-2011 08:02 AM

I had a machine that I had to really watch what the spool was doing when I would a bobbin. For some reason the thread would either wind too loose or get caught around the thread spool holder and wind too tight! I finally changed brands of thread and everything worked just fine.

Tinabodina 10-22-2011 08:04 AM

Yes, what happens is if you have even 1 loop sticking out from your bobbin, you needle and thread get tangled up and rips the bobbin threads until it bogs down the machine causing the clunk clunk noise.

lavonneve 10-22-2011 08:18 AM

Had something like that happen a long time ago. I think the bobbin wasn't wound correctly.

I have had similiar happen when I did not hear a "click" when installing a bobbin w/case in a vertical bobbin.
Always push the bobbin in until it clicks when using a bobbin that goes in the case then in the bobbin assembly.

I have two brother machines that I have purchased from Wal-mart. I had this to happen to me once and come to find out, I had bought more bobbins off the shelf at Wal-mart and I had bought the wrong bobbin. Have you bought replacement bobbins and could this be your problem, also. I went back and bought somemore and compared them. One bobbin is a little thicker than the other and that is what made all the difference. Hopes this helps......

When it happened to me, my bobbin carrier had broken - not allowing it to unwind evenly, thus the mess..... I had to replace the carrier in my Singer.

Macie 10-22-2011 08:49 AM

WOW that is terrible. now I am wondering if I should buy the Brother 6000i I have been thinking about it. Would you recommend it?

Becky Mc 10-22-2011 08:53 AM

oh yes me to this has happened to usually when I am embroidering something, What a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cassie69emt 10-22-2011 08:55 AM

Oh my how many times this has happened to me .Make sure you clean EVERYTHING OUT.Rethread everything .I believe it is caused by the bobbin not being right or the top thread coming out of the right thread path

Yea on one of my older machines that did happen and yes for some reason the bobbin didn't wind tight enough so from that point on I always double checked to be sure it did.

CAS49OR 10-22-2011 09:07 AM

Happened to me when the bobbin wasn't wound correctly.

You could also check your bobbin case. They're supposed to be replaced every 5 years I'm told.

Linda

Yes I use to have this happen often when i first started sewing. It's from when you thread to fill a bobbin not going in the right direction and not filling properly.

On my machine when I put the thread around that little round screw or whatever it is I must over lap it like starting to make a 8 and pull it into the bobbin and it will wind correctly.

If I just pull it around that round screw thing and into the bobbin straight it will not wind bobbin properly and will cause what you have here.

Margie 10-22-2011 10:19 AM

Is the thread old?

SewRodeoGirl 10-22-2011 10:48 AM

You may try removing the bobbin holder to make sure nothing foreign is embedded or around it. Once, after sewing over pins, which I KNOW I shouldn't do, my bobbin acted up and I found two badly bent and broken pieces of pins under the bobbin holder. They were bent enough to stick up and cause problems. Also, that would be a good chance to take a brush and clean out lint from that area, something I need to do more often! Debbie

ORSunshineQuilter 10-22-2011 10:50 AM

Yep I have had that happen, just recently. It had nothing to do with a sharp object because mine loads at the top of the machine. I think the thread gets loose and it just goes out of control. It happened to me with a very fine thread. I removed that bobbin and did another one and it was fine. So, I will segregate that bobbin as maybe a bad bobbin. (probably toss it as I have lots) Anyway, it happens and as long as it doesn't do it every time or on a frequent basis, I refuse to worry about it! LOL

MargeD 10-22-2011 11:56 AM

WOW - that's one for the books. I've had thread get gunked up, but not cut like that. I don't know what to say or recommend, sorry.

Jeanniejo 10-22-2011 12:01 PM

I HAD THAT HAPPEN ONCE ALSO. I TOO THINK THE BOBBIN WAS WOUND TOO LOOSE.

Debra Mc 10-22-2011 12:42 PM

Yes & wrap around the whole thing.

dottientx 10-22-2011 01:21 PM

Have had that happen a few times in my life. Never remember from one time to another what caused it but it's happened....... again! All I've ever been able to do it just cut it loose from the machine and start over again.

threadsdmr 10-22-2011 01:37 PM

Is it a pre-wound bobbin or did you wind it yourself. I am curious? I don't buy pre-wound bobbins.

I wound it myself. I think I wound it on the wrong speed!

quiltingshorttimer 10-22-2011 02:07 PM

I've had it do a similar thing--I had to cut the bobbin out because just tangled in there--the bobbin had not wound correctly.

This is what I was thinking, too. Check to see if you were winding the bobbin correctly. I have been sewing for 40+ years, and when I bought my new quilting machine, I looked at the diagram for threading, but never thought to look at the way to wind bobbins, I just jumped right in. My first two bobbins were OK, I guess, but the third one came out looking like this one. That is when I learned that this machine threads in reverse of all of my others. The thread winds off the bottom of the spool! You have to thread it a certain way to wind bobbins! I hope it is a cheap fix for you too!

chairjogger 10-22-2011 03:07 PM

oh wow ! that looks like it would hurt .. something !! wow.

mimee4 10-22-2011 04:13 PM

Never saw anything like this. Hope you can solve the mystery.

writerwomen 10-22-2011 06:49 PM

Watch your bobbin as it winds to make sure it is making the full wind from top to bottom of the bobbin, wind slow to decrease tension. Sounds also like you had a birds nest waiting to happen- check tension top and botton- be sure you are using at least a coats and clark thread to avoid messes

connie d 10-22-2011 06:58 PM

Can happen when the thread is not wound properly.

DebLuvsQuiltng 10-22-2011 07:21 PM

No idea how the thread became broken, but my mother learned from her sewing machine repairman that bobbins "wear". He suggested periodically replacing all the bobbins because they get wear-marks and no longer perform as well.

Ditto--It was too loose. So glad you got it out.

justlooking 10-23-2011 02:49 AM

I've had that happen too. Bobbin was not wound tight.

Monroe 10-23-2011 08:24 AM

I have the same machine, and yes it appears to be due to poor bobbin winding. I found my bobbin doesn't make good contact with the spring at the top of the spindle when winding so it spins a little unevenly. I put a small washer under the bobbin to raise it and it's fine. Tried felt but the lint snagged in the bobbin thread. Until I figured it out I used a separate bobbin winder, and no more problems. Also- the machine is Very sensitive to lint, so remove the entire cover plate and bobbin holder and clean behind and underneath OFTEN. Be Sure to put a mark on the front of the bobbin holder before removal so you know the exact positioning to replace it. It's not clear in the manual. I have a lot of newish Coats and Clark thread to use up before I start buying anything else.

OneMoreQuilt 10-23-2011 08:51 AM

I've had the bobbin break apart and cause a big wadded mess but have never seen the thread cut like that?
