I was sewing along with my Brother 6000i and suddenly everything froze up with a clunking sound. When I finally got the bobbin out, this is what it looked like. Have you ever had this happen before? What could have caused it????
Linda

I didn't cut the threads, this is the way it came out of the machine...

Wow, no have never had that happen. What a mess. Looks like something in you bobbin casing area cut the theads but can't think what would have done it.
Hope you figure it out.

toomanycats 10-21-2011 08:59 AM

wow is right. at least you were able to get the bobbin out of the machine. maybe a tip of a needle broke off in there sometime and is cutting the thread?

cjsparks 10-21-2011 09:02 AM

I agree. Check for something sharp. Also feel where you place the bobbin to make sure there is not a burr on anything.

Deborahlees 10-21-2011 09:05 AM

happened to me once, think the thread was not wound on the bobbin correctly, like not tight enough.....

QuiltnNan 10-21-2011 09:08 AM

i've had the freeze up and clunk, but not the cut threads.

craftybear 10-21-2011 09:09 AM

Wow, what a pain, is your machine sewing okay now with a different bobbin

yes i had that happen once or twice. I also think it was caused by the bobbin not filling correctly. mine wasn't quite that bad but enough to cause a problem. i was able to remove the cut threads then rewind the rest onto another bobbin and it was fine.

CarrieC 10-21-2011 09:13 AM

Unfortunately my answer is an embarrassing yes. It happened when I didn't wind my bobbin properly - according to my repair man, after the $65 check was accepted, the loose rounds on the bobbin got caught up and the result was uglier than yours.

Sadiemae 10-21-2011 09:24 AM

Like bakermom my first thought was a poorly wound bobbin.

doris.meek13088 10-21-2011 09:26 AM

Yes, on my previous mahine. I agree that it had something to do with not winding the bobbin properly. I have purchased the bobbin winder machine and wound just a couple but it did not do a good job like my machine and I had trouble with skipping stiches. It may be just the way I use it but I will be listing it on Ebay to solve the problem.

RkayD 10-21-2011 09:47 AM

timing off maybe? and the needle was hitting it just enough to cause that? Thats odd..hopefully your machine isn't damaged. =)

Lady_Paquette 10-21-2011 09:55 AM

My old machine did that to me before. That thing was possessed I swear. I think it was a combination of a few things. Tension, timing and the demon living inside it needed a snack.

mmdquilts 10-21-2011 10:20 AM

I have had it get all wadded up but never cut.

Similar problem bobbin not wound tight enough.

MadQuilter 10-21-2011 10:24 AM

I have had issues with bobbins on the Brother but not to that degree. I always forgot to set the motor speed to the high setting for bobbin winding.

sewmary 10-21-2011 10:32 AM

Yes, just the other day. Bobbin not wound correctly. Next one worked fine. Now to try to get the thread off the mis-wound bobbin.

M.I.Late 10-21-2011 10:43 AM

I've had that happen before. Something obviously inside did do the cutting. It's definitely cut. I think I realized that I had the bobbin backwards or that it was improperly wound, I can't remember which.(Oh, or wound too full - that might have been it. I no longer wind them until they stop. (I also use brothers).

MisDixie 10-21-2011 10:49 AM

Yep, I have a Brother 6000. Very fussy when the bobbin case has some dirt/lint in it. The auto cutter will stick out and that can be the result. Clean it often and that prevents the bobbin mess.

Pam Riggs 10-21-2011 11:35 AM

Yes - it happened to me. I took my machine to a little quilt shop down the road from me and was told that my bobbin was the wrong size. I needed a "mushroom top" bobbin. Haven't had any trouble since. It was weird.

newbee3 10-21-2011 12:36 PM

I would say it was put in the wrong way

Thank you, MadQuilter and everyone who responded. I looked at what was left on my bobbin and it was not wound tightly. Weird, because I had used over half the bobbin before this happened. My machine was set on medium speed, so maybe I forgot and wound it on that speed. I rewound it on high speed, and so far it is doing fine. I'm so glad it didn't damage the machine!
Thanks for everyone's help! You guys are the greatest!

leatheflea 10-21-2011 03:01 PM

Yep my brother did it a few weeks ago. Have no idea what the problem was, I'm just glad its not doing it anymore!

Carole Angel 10-21-2011 03:24 PM

Mine did that a couple of times so I got out the manual and discovered I was placing the bobbin in the machine backwards!!! It's a wonder it was sewing at all...

wvdek 10-21-2011 07:13 PM

Yeah! Glad you found the problem.

luv2so 10-22-2011 02:41 AM

Yes! It happened to me on my Brother 4000D. When I took it in to check it, the needle cutter had a piece of thread stuck under it and stuck in the cutting position. I've since turned the automatic cutter off.

Babs194068 10-22-2011 02:47 AM

It usually means my machine needs to be cleaned

Thats exactly what caused this to happen.. ask me how I know.. lolol I actually sent a picture to brother asking them what is wrong with my machine. As I am a newbie.. I just knew it had to be my machine..couldn't be me.. as I did nothing wrong. ha ha ha..

Kuusistoquilter 10-22-2011 03:11 AM

Yes, several times. If I fill the bobbins too full, or too loose, this happens with my Vikings.

thenonnielady 10-22-2011 03:18 AM

yep. not good.

OH YES ONE OF SEWING MACHINES TAKES A 66 PLASTIC ONLY A 66 METAL WILL NOT WORK IT DOES THAT THING ALL THE TIME MY OTHERS WILL TAKE METAL OR PLASTIC BUT NOT MY 360 MODEL SINGER ONLY 66 PLASTIC.

Elisabeth J 10-22-2011 04:35 AM

I had it happen 2 times this week at retreat. I figured out the thread wasn't wound tight enough.

Yooper32 10-22-2011 05:03 AM

I think that your machine has the thread cutter??? If so, your bobbin thread may have hit a hiccup, got caught and as a result popped up slightly and commited Hari-Cari on itself or slit i'ts own throat.

Noiseynana 10-22-2011 05:10 AM

Yes i have, just last week. Had to change the bobbin thread. It appeared to have been wound too tight. Works fine now.

Kath12 10-22-2011 05:18 AM

I've had that happen before too. I think it is a poorly wound bobbin and the loose threads got caught in the tension and under the bobbin case

Mona Marie 10-22-2011 05:21 AM

It has happened to me.

Have had similar problems. Didn't get the bobbin filled properly. When it happens I use for hand sewing

J Carol 10-22-2011 06:01 AM

Was this a pre-wound bobbin baughten from a store or one you wound?

vickig626 10-22-2011 06:13 AM

yep...it's happened to me too. not sure what causes it but once this happens, this wound bobbin is no longer usable. It pulls too much and causes the thread to wind too tight around the bobbin. I just put these aside and use for hand sewing.

I have a Babylock and it happens occasionally, usually when I need to clean the bobbin area thoroughly with a vacuum.

Or, as someone else mentioned, maybe the bobbin didn't wind properly.
