Some of my friends love it, I don't. The reason I don't is because I think the seam allowance is too big. I like to make a scant 1/4 inch seam.

Hi schnurke, would love to know were that user name came from--- my brother used to call those he was close to schnurky and never knew where it came from.To get back to your quetion re. the quarter inch foot, yes I use one and love it --- just be careful and remember that if you want to zigzag stitch it has a round hole and you need to change the foot. love Letty, believe me I have the broken needles to show for ti.

I have a Singer, an inexpensive one because I originally bought it for my granddaughter. Howver, it works fine for me! I need a foot with the quarter inch guide, and Singer said to talk with their parts department. Problem is, I don't know if I have a low shank or high shank pressure foot - any help? I don't want to order something that does not work. For now, I use moleskin, and move over the needle. Not as accurate, however, as I have to remove the moleskin to change/fill the bobbin and reposition it. (not a drop in)

My Bernina came with a 1/4" foot with a guide, and I didn't like it, so I removed the guide. The reason I don't like it, is because when I match points, I use a pin, and sew right up to the pin. But the guide catches on the pin and gives the fabric a little tweak, and I get a crooked seam.
What I tell my beginning piecing students it that everyone finds their scant 1/4" seam differently. I find mine by adjusting the needle bar to the right one notch, and guiding the fabric edge just inside the feed dog hole. That would be guiding it from the bottom. Some find it by guiding the fabric edge along the edge of their 1/4" presser foot. That would be guiding it from the top. A good way to find your scant 1/4" seam is to sew on 1/4" graph paper, and see where you need to guide the edge of the fabric to get your needle just to the right of the line. |
I can live without the guide. The Janome 8900 comes with a 1/4" foot with guide, but I really prefer a foot without the guide myself.

I have one for my FW and Janome. They help some, but you still need to be careful.

I love mine. My seam are so consistent now, I couldn't be happier!!! :)

I have the foot with the guide and love it. I have another foot without the guide and used it for years before I got this foot. Piecing is a breeze,no matter what anyone says, fabric does slide a tad and it will throw off your seam allowance.
The guide helps the fabric stay in place. I teach quilting and I recommend this foot to all my studentsl |
I have used both kinds (one with a guide and one without.) I find new quilters learning to sew get more benefit as they do not have to break bad habits from sewer's days. I teach them how to guide with guide and that's how they do it. Also for me sewing too fast guide or not my seams can and will get crooked.:( Pegeth
