Or made one for that purpose?
Let's face it... you would be changing a tablecloth a lot more than you would a bed quilt. More opportunity to include the fabrics you love in your daily life! |
Just made one for my DDIL. It is at the LA quilter as I type. Can't wait til I give it to her:)
I haven't, but my MIL and her mother do it all the time.
Yes I made one several years ago to fit our diningroom table.
It is (neutrals) biege, tan ivory, etc. I really like it but you have to be careful with a small light weight glass as the cloth is heavier than what people are used to. When I learn to post pictures, I'll put it up for you to see. |
I purchased several old quilt tops at IQS many years ago and that is what they are used for to this day.
Isn't that what a Tabletopper is? A mini quilt...Now I am confused...if it is not, please explain what the difference is!
Yes I do. I really didnt need anymore big quilts but wanted to keep quilting so I started making tablecloths/runners/placemats/wallhangings, anything to keep me in the loop.
Most of the tablecloths are seasonal. |
We use them on the picnic table out on the deck all the time when we entertain out there in the summer. Makes me feel like one of the Waltons sometimes.
yes. some have made just for the table. I use a large piece of heavy plastic that you buy off the bolt at the fabric store over the top so if something is spilled won't stain it.
I have several and use them all the time. They look great, protect the table well and can be changed around with the seasons too! Did I mention they are fun to make>
I have a Christmas one that I use on my LR coffee table during the holidays. I'm planning to make another now for a more year-round purpose. I usually leave that table uncovered but when folks are over for coffee and cake, etc. it saves the hassle of coasters and the like and I don't make myself crazy thinking about the wood being scratched!
My mom always had one on her dining room table,,,was first thing you saw when walking in front door..she used a cheap $1.00 clear shower curtain liner to cover quilt when we ate in dining room for holidays and get-togethers, Plus helped keep table from piling up because wanted to 'showoff' newest quilt.
What great ideas - makes me think! I have an antique round dining table and would love to make a quilt tablecloth for it, rather than usual tablecloth - maybe just back it but no filling??? at the least a very thin filling like flannel.
My Quilting buddy has a small kitchen table with 2 fold up leaves--enough for 2 people with leaves down--pushed against the wall. She puts a small quilt on top of it, then covers with clear vinyl plastic. She changes it seasonally or whenever she feels like it. I'm always checking to see what's on her table.
This is on my (long) list of projects. I have a wood table in my kitchen. I had a piece of glass cut to protect the top, but I want to make a Christmas quilted tablecloth. I'll put it under the glass. I was planning on just lining it, no batting, but haven't decided yet.
Great Idea, never thought of that.
I love using my quilts for a tablecloth and also table toppers. When I wash it, I put on a different one. I have them for holidays and the seasons. People really take notice and a couple of my friends started quilting so they could have one for their table :D :D
yes, i made one for just that purpose, camping!
i use hvy duty clear plastic to cover it. |
Would love to do that! Just haven't yet.
Yes, I have 2 table covers that I made specifically for that purpose. I love how they look!!
I do all the time, just put a plastic placemat on top for dinner.
No I would not , I would have to cover with plastic and ... the plastic cover would remind me of the old couch covers , that no one ever took off.
Yes, I have covered my table with a quilt...do it often mostly for "looks"...if just family, we pull the quilt off when it is time to eat, and I put it back on after meal is over/clean up done. If I ever want to use it with company, then I do have plastic to put over it to protect the quilt.
And I have lots of tablerunners and tabletoppers too! |
Do you use batting in the tablecloth quilts?
Sounds like a very good idea to really display some handiwork. |
I plan on making a Christmas table cloth using a bow pattern. I think lots of pretty bow blocks should look good.
I made several for picnics for each daughter and they love them - use designer fabric samples. I also make full size oval table cloths for the table as they are hard to find around here - I use a backing that can be used as another one by flipping it over - easy to wash and use and lots of fun when the grand kids come.
Yes, I do it especially when we get together to donate our pillowcases for the APQ challenge.
Every time I do it I remember the cartoon I saw several years ago. The husband and wife are sitting at the table and she says to him "I don't think we can afford this restaraunt. They have antique quilts for tablecloths." |
Yes, one of my first ones, and several others. One was made to cover my table at a craft fair; flannel backing with no batting for items to lay flatter.

No I haven't, but I make seasonal table runners, dinner napkins and placemats for my Mom. She seems to enjoy setting a formal table during the holidays, and I'm always willing to oblige her with the bit of joy that it brings her.
I love the opportunity to showcase a quilt favorite on a special occassion. Don't do it anymore because I no longer have my dining table. Miss it for that purpose. Will need to find another way to incorporate my quilts into my "public life" (outside the bedrooms). Enjoy them!
Do you actually quilt them?

yep and smack clear plastic on top to protect from stains!
I do it all the time. I have a red white and blue one I use every 4th of July. A halloween one too. I usually plan on it being a tablecloth and use only thin batting or no batting/
No it would be too much work for how worn it would get in no time.
I have a frien who was looking for a small throw rug in certain colors and never could find one. Until one day she looked up on here wall and there was one of her quilts she had not hand quilted yet, in just the right colors. It now is on her floor under her glass coffee table.
I have several table toppers that I have made and I love them because I can put hot things on the table without a hot pad. I usually just make it the size of the table top and don't have anything hanging or the edge. It works great.
