Have you tried the Slidelock?

If you have used the slidelock to prevent ruler slipping, please let me know your opinions as to how successful (or not) they were. I'm looking at them because I have problems with accurate cutting and thought they might be helpful. Thanks.

I've had one ever since I cut my finger with a rotary cutter. I bought it for safety back when it was only available from an Australian website. Much cheaper then the ER bill and follow up even after insurance. I have both sizes and will not cut with a cutter without it. I put it on top of my ruler, I don't use it as ruler. I don't know why anyone would cut with a rotary cutter and not use a safety device of some kind. My guild has a rule that anyone cutting has to use a cut resistant glove, a ruler grip, or the Slidelock. The guild has all three available to use when cutting . Having to call an ambulance twice because of bad cuts (one member almost sued the guild for no safety device offered, yes it can happen) the guild makes no exceptions about having to use a safety device when cutting in their meetings.

I tried it out and started cutting with my ruler the way you cut with one of these rulers whihc to me is backwards. The one thing I disliked was no lines to use to line up to cut. Do you have a friend who has one and ask to try it out? Test driving stuff is a great way to find if it fits your needs.

I love mine. Use it on top of my June Taylor mat to cut strips. It is the best thing I have found for keeping that mat from slipping. I agree it's not great on its own. Like the tip about using it on top of a ruler; will try that.

Dolphyngyrl 08-08-2015 01:33 PM

I use both sizes all the time on top and in conjunction with other rulers

Onebyone 08-08-2015 01:46 PM

It originally was a safety tool and the instructions were to use it on top of another ruler. It works best that way, so why so many started using it as a ruler is odd and is not the intended use. The makers I guess went with the idea it stopped miss cuts instead of safety as most won't buy a safety tool that is pricey.

I have both sizes and they're okay. I wish they were a bit wider because when I'm holding the handle, my hand is still in the way a little. I am confused about how it works on top of another ruler since the slippery-ness between the plain ruler and the fabric is the same either way. The slidelock has rubbery balls that would never even contact the fabric if it's on top of another ruler, and the other ruler is still slick on the underside.

caspharm 08-08-2015 03:25 PM

I love mine and am considering buying the smaller one. I have used it on fabric and another ruler and never had a problem.

imsewnso 08-08-2015 05:57 PM

Love mine.....best thing since sliced bread

TerryQuilter 08-08-2015 08:00 PM

Have the larger one and find it awkward and backwards. Going to try it on top of my ruler and see how it works--thanks for the tip.

redneckwoman 08-09-2015 02:45 AM

I have both sizes they are great. I cut 6 layers of fabric at once no slipping they are great

Grandma Nancy 08-09-2015 03:46 AM

I use mine on top of the ruler and it does help with slipage. I like mine.

pdriggs 08-09-2015 03:59 AM

I use the lines on my cutting board for the ruler and put the slidelock directly on the fabric. It makes cutting so much better for me. My cutting mat is accurate, so this works very well for me. I would not give it up.

I have one...but I think it has a different name. I use it quite often. Keeps everything in place and hands away from blade!

coopah 08-09-2015 04:16 AM

While I don't know about this product at all, I can tell you that I bought a small Creative Grid ruler to see how they worked. Since then, I've ditched my other rulers and bought the sizes I use most in the Creative Grid. I'm up to five rulers now and love them. They grip very well. I do check the numbers twice before cutting, though.

misseva 08-09-2015 04:37 AM

i have two. love them.

I would think you would lose the gripping ability of the Slidelock if you use it on top of a ruler. Doesn't the ruler slip just as much as using the ruler alone?

Here is a video demonstrating the Slidelock: http://quiltersslidelock.com/

maviskw 08-09-2015 05:14 AM

Sounds to me like we need a video on how these work and the best way to use them. People are using them differently, and maybe either way is correct? ? ? ?

ladydukes 08-09-2015 06:26 AM

I have one and use it all the time! LOVE it!

ladydukes 08-09-2015 06:27 AM

You don't use it on top of the ruler, you place the slidelock up next to the ruler, then remove the ruler.

Kitsie 08-09-2015 06:44 AM

Oh, that's a good idea Prism99! Just wish you'd posted it one day sooner as I cut several thousand 1 1/2" strips yesterday with my June Taylor - and there was my Slidelock sitting right there! Oh, well, 100 black strips still to cut today!

when I first started quilting I measured the fabric I wanted to cut from the left hand side of the fabric. I am right handed. My first cut was started against the ruler then veered off the ruler and ruined almost half of the fabric I had. Obviously there was a problem. After that fiasco I turned my fabric around....cut from the right side of the fabric. After squaring the end of the fabric, I measure over the amount I want to cut. Eg. a 3.5" strip. I use the ruler to measure then put the slide loc next to the ruler....remove ruler and cut. Works GREAT!! Before the side loc I had always used 2 rulers......just worked for me.

I would not feel safe putting the slide-loc on top of another ruler.

This video is a great demo....and what I have always used.

If you are having trouble using this I would suggest that you LOWER the height of the table you are using the slide-loc with. I would think you are not above it to apply proper pressure.

feffertim 08-09-2015 07:13 AM

I have both sizes and love them, I use them all the time and will not cut without them. Make sure you read the direction sand use them correctly. You DO NOT use them on top of your ruler, you line up the ruler on the fabric to the correct size you want to cut, slide the slide lock tightly next to it and then remove the ruler.

there is video on their website

My friend bought these and I was skeptical and didn't buy them. I borrow one of hers and fell in love with it. She bought them at a show and got a good price. I'll be buying them at the next quilting show. I put my ruler with the markings up against the slide lock and it worked great. Now, I'm used to the fact there are no lines on the sidelock and feel comfortable with using the markings on my cutting mat. It did take some getting used to.

JanieH 08-09-2015 07:49 AM

This sure looks like a great product. I went to their website and saw that they will be at the Houston show in October. They are definitely on my list of things to look at. Thanks for posting about it.

I have both and love them. Measure your fabric you wish to cut with a ruler, and then place the slidelock next to it, remove the ruler and cut. It makes it very accurate and does not slip.

Onebyone 08-09-2015 08:35 AM

You DO NOT use them on top of your ruler, you line up the ruler on the fabric to the correct size you want to cut, slide the slide lock tightly next to it and then remove the ruler.
That is the original purpose of the Slidelock to be on top of your ruler. Not on the cutting edge of the ruler but to hold your ruler in place. It use to be called RULE STEADY. I have one of the first ones from Australia and one of the newer ones. They are both exactly alike.

Perhaps they have found that they work better IF they are NOT on top of a ruler.....the video does not show that at all.

I think like a US marketer, the no miss cut feature will sell more then the safety feature.

duckydo 08-09-2015 09:00 AM

I have the large one, and if used correctly they are great. Really good for someone with arthritis, all you have to do is put pressure on it for it to hold

Karen G 08-09-2015 09:53 AM

I watched the video, I placed an order!

Eisy 08-09-2015 10:07 AM

I think they should have lines on too so I took a marker and made my own. Works great now.

onaemtnest 08-09-2015 10:14 AM

After reading on the board here, how experienced members had a moment of distraction with a rotary cutter and were emergency room bound, Painful recovery times....I wince just thinking about it.

I was convinced the Slide Lock was a necessary item for my sewing room. For me there was the learning curve of using two rulers one with lines to measure and then placing the Slide Lock next to the ruler and then removing the lined ruler. I cannot understand placing the Slide Lock on top of another ruler as other's have stated, I would think you have defeated the purpose of the Slide Lock locking onto the fabric to keep the ruler from sliding?

I first bought the smaller one because the demonstrator suggested it was her 'go to' size. I used it and loved it eventually purchasing the larger one which is probably my 'go to' size preference.

cwcquilters 08-09-2015 11:21 AM

I purchased them when they first came out. The long and the shorter one. Now they have lights and I surely wish mine did. I really really like them.

imsewnso 08-09-2015 11:32 AM

Mine has the "lights" However, unless you cut at the right angle you do not really see the "light". I tell you this so you realize you are not missing out on much...really and truly. If the light in the sewing room hits the slide-loc at the right angle, where you are standing it shows, but you already have the ruler in the correct position....so it is redundant IMHO.

It's not 'lights' per say, it's the fluorescent acrylic that makes the ruler appear to light up. I totally agree with the previous post that says you really aren't missing anything as I don't find the 'light up' ruler that helpful on my cutting area/setup.

Best money I've spent. Broke my wrist 5 years ago & it's still weak. The slidelock makes cutting so much easier for me.
