Having Trouble Squaring Up Blocks

Hi friends,
I'm doing the Mystery quilt and have all my HST's done. However, they are about 6 inches and I have to trim to 4.5 inches. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this!!
I have every rule known to man/woman :)
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Susie

If you have the Bloc Loc rulers I would start with that.
Trim two sides (about 1/4") then slide your ruler and
position it to the 4.5" mark and you should have a 4.5"
square. There are lots of videos on Youtube on how to
trim HST's.

When squaring up HST, I sew them into the square and put the 45 degree mark from my square on the seam line. I then square the one corner and 2 sides and then move the square to do the opposite sides.
However, if they need to remain triangles until you know where they go, they will have to wait until the pattern tells you their location.

I'm making mistakes :( When I put the bloc loc is on the 4.5 it will cut off too much.
I've already ruined two blocks GRRRR

First off I would question any pattern that has you make 6" blocks to be trimmed down to 4 1/2". I simply can't fathom why the designer would have so much waste. That is crazy and makes me think there is a typo in the pattern. I can see trimming down a 6" block to 5 1/2".

When I trim down hourglass blocks (like you have pictured there) I would be lining up the center of the block at 2.25" mark both from side and top to make my first two cuts (along side and top of block) using a regular ruler.

Trimming an hourglass block is much different than trimming an HST block.

It wasn't a typo- I did it myself. I used charm pack fabrics and that's why they came out so large. Thank you all for you help! I think I have it now :)

Well that's not a HST. That's a QST or Quarter Square Triangle.
Feline Fanatic already gave you the instructions.
I agree about lots of waste making that block.
Usually you trim a sliver. Not that much.

Yes, I meant to say QST- and yes there is a lot of waste. But it was my own fault. Thanks everyone!!!

You need to put the 2 1/4 mark from your ruler at the center point of your block. Trim two sides then turn your block. Put the 4 1/2 lines on the cut sides and trim the other two sides

The ruler is in the wrong position.

Here is the tutorial video to help you. Quarter square is included too. Good luck!
