He Saw My Machine

I had a man come in to clean my carpet in my livingroom. My sewing room door was open and he said Oh, do you sew? Yes, stupid me says, I love to sew. Oh, says he I have four pairs of new pants that need to be shortened, could you do them for me? Thinking FAST, I said Oh no, I only sew quilts. He looked at me kind of funny. Can you imagine?

Candace 03-12-2012 06:13 PM

You weren't even tempted in the least to say, "Sure, take them off." And then give a dirty grin. :>

DebraK 03-12-2012 06:17 PM

lol! Talk about opening a can of worms ;-)

b.zang 03-12-2012 06:19 PM

Maybe you could have traded the shortening for the carpet work.

QuiltnNan 03-12-2012 06:25 PM

good quick thinking

Maureen 03-12-2012 06:29 PM

Wish I thought of that Candace!

Patsy Beaubouef 03-12-2012 06:38 PM

Why do people think that just because you sew that you would like to do alterations? It's like getting a root canal.

Good thinking!

Tollergirl 03-13-2012 12:14 AM

even my DH laughed when i read this post to him!

QuiltingCrazie 03-13-2012 12:25 AM

LOL I'm with you I detest alterations! That's funny.....why do people assume because you sew you want to fix all their clothes??? Craziness!!

LavenderBlue 03-13-2012 01:28 AM

Hate, hate, hate alterations!!! A few of my friends have asked for them and I try to at least hesitate. So far, they have not given them to me. I've decided if/when the subject comes up again, I'm going to be good to myself and tell them it is like punishment.

Merivale 03-13-2012 02:07 AM

The cheek of him. You are so much calmer than I would have been. Take a pat on the back for your quick and polite answer.

MaryLane 03-13-2012 02:26 AM

It's the same as people saying, "Oh, you're a doctor? Hey, I've got......What do you think?" My DIL says she doesn't deal with anything below the clavicle and I have still seen people try to get her to diagnose their various ailments.

I would probably be quicker to do his alterations than to make him a quilt!

mpspeedy 03-13-2012 03:11 AM

Hey, Don't knock it till you have tried it. Alterations bring in a lot of money. I think my husband married me because I could do things like repair the pockets in his jeans and cook from scratch. His first wife could do neither and was proud of it. If you wanted some extra money for quilt stuff you could earn it real fast doing even basic alterations or repairs. Ask anyone who has been a bridesmaid lately how much it cost them to have the dress hemmed, altered or fitted.

gailinva 03-13-2012 04:15 AM

I always say my machines can't do alterations, only make quilts!!!!

judylg 03-13-2012 04:32 AM

Several weeks ago, I was in a quilt shop in a small town. A guy walked in and took off his coat, then he said to the owner, can you fix this, she said yes. However she was not ready to drop everything and fix it right on the spot, unfortunately he thought she would. They finally settled on doing it within the hour. I thought, typical mentality of some people, you can do it the minute they want it. I left, she was working on it. It was a Friday afternoon, I know he might have needed it for the weekend. But still. Hope she was able to get her money out of that deal.

Raggiemom 03-13-2012 04:34 AM

I know what you mean--I hate hemming!

AliKat 03-13-2012 07:03 AM

Hey, that is how I used to get extra from. I don't mind and I set my own timeline. After all hems are easy breezy.

If you don't want to do it, that is OK. If you do, you will probably get the job.

I am with you on that.People in my small town hear that I can quilt and are always stopping me and wanting mending or hemming.I detest that but politely say I quilt and cannot work on clothes-2 different worlds

Jingle 03-13-2012 11:08 AM

I only quilt also, I use to make clothes and now I hate to sew a button on, maybe I am just lazy.

kuntryquilter 03-14-2012 03:01 AM

Sewing was my first love, quilting came about 4 years ago. I still do limited alterations for people. I at one time was a professional tailor and dress maker, left that business about 20 years or so ago. I do charge for the alterations I do & I have my steady customers & I still enjoy it.

jitkaau 03-14-2012 03:19 AM

I find it is a quick way to make pocket money.

BeverlyH 03-14-2012 03:26 AM

That's a hilarious answer, Candace! hahahahaha!

I do alterations for people, not so much any more. But they want miracles for $5. I don't know who you know that is making $$$$$$s from alterations but it is not here in PA. People who think you sew at your kitchen table expect the world for a little money as possible. Now I sew for a select few people that I know and can trust to not take advantage of me.

Pieces2 03-14-2012 04:20 AM

How funny!

jfkquilts 03-14-2012 04:35 AM

When heariang stories like this I often think of this quote: ' Asking a quilter to mend is like asking Picasso to paint the bathroom!!!' Don't know where I heard this, but I like it!!

callen 03-14-2012 04:40 AM

Tooo funny!!!

Elaine433 03-14-2012 04:45 AM

That was fast thinking on your part.

Scakes 03-14-2012 04:47 AM

I believe if you have a sewing machine, every body thinks you do alterations. I have a friend who keeps telling me since I have so many machines, I should open an alterations business. What do the number of machines have to do with anything? LOL. I just keep explaining - I like to make quilts - not alter clothes.

Debbie C 03-14-2012 05:09 AM

The only altering I do on clothing is to cut them up and make quilts!! If someone wants their clothes cut into small squares and triangles, them I'm your girl!! LOL

twinkie 03-14-2012 05:18 AM

WOW, How funny!! A little off color but funny. LOL

I love to quilt, but, hate to do alterations, hemming, or even sewing buttons on. If anyone asks, I just tell them that I only do quilts.

jaciqltznok 03-14-2012 05:40 AM

imagine the nerve of him "assuming" that just because you have a sewing machine, that you would actually KNOW how to tailor his pants! How silly is that!
Of course in the Good old days a women with a sewing machine DID in fact take in sewing why else would she have the machine!

solstice3 03-14-2012 05:42 AM

First ;you sew...then you cook ...then...smart move

Caswews 03-14-2012 06:01 AM

hahahahha- when DH's brother and his <ahem> wife moved in for a stay till they could find their own space-I was constantly being asked to help her sew this up or that up (but yet she knew how to sew!pffftt no she didn't!) and then when he found out I had an embroidery machine too- he wanted me to embroidery several shirts etc.. Ummmm let me think- No but Hades NO ! LOL (and I helped her once to do her hemming;then she knew how to do it all !LOL)

FLQ 03-14-2012 06:27 AM

Lol!!! Some guys are weird.

bunbytes 03-14-2012 06:56 AM

Hey, I applique in church and afterwards (the minister is just fine with it) and I've had men ask me what I'm crocheting! This guy had a really big set of ______. To see something in someone's house where he is providing a service and assuming you would want to do alterations takes a lot of guts! I like your response. You are so kind.

VERY funny.

Yeah, nobody sews anymore. Someone once offered to pay me to sew on their buttons.
And to think I took sewing in HomEc as a kid and made an apron. I still have it!

The worst ones are your friends whom it is hard to say "NO"to.
