I sat down yesterday to sew a rip in DH shirt pocket. I started sewing and noticed my machine (Pearl by name) was making a popping sound every few seconds. Oh no, not my new baby! I pulled the bobbin, nothing wrong there. Pulled the thread, re-threaded, still popping. Checked tension setting, it's right. Getting nervous now. I hate to think what this will cost in a repair shop. Checked to be sure foot screw was tight, no problems there. I picked up the package of needles and put a new one in, still popping. Tried different fabric, getting desperate, still popping. Walked away. Came back to try again. Rechecked everything. Still popping. Changed thread, changed bobbin, new needle. Still popping, now I am beginning to wonder how long it would be before I could afford to get it fixed (fixed income). I gave in and took it all apart and put it back in the box. With tears in my eyes, I started clearing the table of sewing supplies, to get old faithful (Penny by name) out to used for the time being. As I picked up the needle case, I looked down, and realized I had been using the size 18! I had been practicing the day before and the last thing I worked on was denim! Dufus! Dufus! Dufus!

if that's stupid I'm right there with you. Isn't it nice to have company
how frustrating. glad it was a simple fix
The flip side is that sweet Pearl can come back out of the box!!
yep!!been there done that!
Whew! Been there and thank goodness that was all it was!
I have done that before too. I know right away if I have the wrong needle in. My machine tries to eat my fabric if I have too large of a needle in. Good thing you figured it out before it went to the Doc. :D
Well, you figured it out. Congratulate yourself for that!!! Beats taking a working machine in for repairs......
I am so glad I never, ever, ever make any mistakes when sewing ROFL BAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Awwww. It happens. Glad to know it was something that didn't cost anything to fix.
It happens to us all. Don't feel stupid, just be thankful that's all that was wrong!
The first thing I thought of was a piece of paper in the pocket. Glad it was just the needle and not time for the repairman!
Glad it was a simple fix.

I'm trying to get into the habit of putting a post-it note on my machine indicating what size and type of needle is in the machine at the time. It's sort of a low-tech version of those things they sell that you velcro onto the machine (where you move the slider to the needle size). Even the magnifier on the needle boxes isn't quite enough for me anymore... I can never see the numbers on the needles LOL.
whew, at least Pearl isn't sick

We have all had to AHA moments. Glad it was an easy fix for you

That's not nearly as bad as when I left my plastic template in my embroidery hoop. Couldn't figure out what was making that popping noise. I didn't realize what it was until I took the embroidery out of the hoop. Now my template has a cross shaped hole in the middle of it. I hate to admit it but that's not the dumbest thing I've done, and we're only talking about sewing.

Welcome to the crowd of new machine owners with DUH! moments!
I'm glad you figured it out fairly quickly and it was a no cost fix! |
Just did that one myself! Must be something in the air.
Glad you found out what the problem was and i bet Pearl is thrilled she dosen't have to go to the dr....
glad it wasn't the machine. I know that feeling when it starts talking to you and you don't know what to do to help it except take it in to the "machine doctor"
My "ESSIE" was looping bottom threads really bad the other day. I rethreaded, refilled a bobbin with the thread I was using on top, just in case it was different. Cleaned everything I could, redid everything again....I had been sewing just fine when this decided to happen....I had even put in a new needle the day before....I was thinking as you were...service will be a loan, I'm sure. plus my closest dealer now is about 100 miles away. Decicde as last resort to change needle...sews beautifully as almost always usual again....Must have been a bad needle....Panic attack is now gone! WHEW!
You can check that off your list of wrong things to do, there will be more to come. Just when I think I've made all the possible mistakes, here comes another, or I start all over again. Glad it was an easy fix.
what a nice easy valuable lesson! and what a good girl Ms Pearl was to let you know something was not right!
Praise for Pearl and a needle keep for mom are in order! Happy sewing! |
Oh, I'm so glad Pearl is OK! I had a night like that last night, too. Guess we're members of the same club.

Just be glad you didn't take Pearl to the "Doc" and the "Doc" tell you that you had the wrong needle in and had to pay for it !! (been there, done that !!LOL)
By the way love the name my dear departed gma's name was Pearl. |
I'm glad you discovered what the problem was. I had a problem with my machine a couple of days ago. I kept getting a message to rethread my machine. I changed bobbins, changed thread, cleaned out the bobbin case, changed stitches, turned machine off for a few minutes, changed the needle and still was getting the same message. So, I packed my machine up and took it to the repair shop 50 miles away bracing myself for a period of time without my favorite machine and a $100 repair bill. I got there and the repairman got the same message and after a bit of fiddling around he got it fixed. He said the take up spring was stuck. He did a quick look over to make sure everything else was in working order, told me "no charge" and sent me on my way. I was just thrilled!

Glassquilt, do you have a pattern available for the teal block? I love it. Flynuts2
Soooooo happy you figured out what was wrong! When reading your post I almost started crying for you when you said you took it all apart and started putting away your sewing supplies. That's like ripping our hearts out!!!!
Don't you just love those moments?
Headsmacking moment....love that term...
So with a Size 18 needle you were drilling holes... good thing on DH shirt and not your quilt.... Positive flip side.... |

I love your machine names.

I recently had to change the size needle I wanted to work with. I realized that with my memory (none) that I wouldn't remember to change back. I wrote the needle size on a piece of painter's tape and taped it to my machine to remind myself to change back. I find I have to write notes about most everything nowadays. You should see my kitchen cabinets. My daughter is getting worried about me.
