Welcome from Oklahoma

Rulers: Absolutely necessary maybe not.... essential to sanity... definitely.
I quilted for years without them but after getting a set last year, I have used them extensively. My theory is that they weren't available to the pioneer women or my grandmother and their quilts were square and precise.

Doreen 04-14-2011 11:37 AM

I have a plethera of rulers. Some because it was required at a class and never used again. I find that your basics are needed. A 24", a square-various sizes, a ruler that squares your blocks.

Good morning & welcome from Liberty Hill TX. You'll love this msg. board - I just joined last mo. & it is filled w/wonderful sharing, helpful people (from ALL OVER THE WORLD - that's so cool)

I just have the basics I guess, a reg. marked plastic cutting ruler, a triangle & a square one. (not sure what brand or what they are even called, they are so old).

I was born just down the road from you, in Ft. Hancock - but that was 77 yrs ago, & my folks moved when I was young. Understand it was just a "wide spot" in the road then, & not much bigger now. ;-)

Have a blessed day & may all your quilts be filled w/love.

GABBYABBY 04-15-2011 04:43 AM

Welcome to the QB!!! I only buy rulers if I

maryb119 04-15-2011 04:45 AM

In a word....yes! I use them all eventually.

Absolutely, you will find that for each pattern, there is a need for a different ruler!

Welcome, and Yes, I use every one of my 12 or more rulers.

CarrieAnne 04-15-2011 07:00 AM

welcome!

helenhiwater 04-15-2011 07:33 AM

For years I just used scissors and a pattern. My daughter finally took me in hand and introduced me to rotary cutter, cutting board and clear ruler. They make cutting a lot faster and more accurate. I like complicated patterns, so they come out less wonky now than they did before.

katieranch 04-15-2011 07:59 AM

Welcome from Arizona...yes, rulers are good!

Little Sue 4.9 04-15-2011 09:44 AM

Ditto here

trolleystation 04-15-2011 02:16 PM

You never can have too many of different size rulers. Keeping track of them is my problem.

Hello from San Gabriel, California

Quilted Nana 04-15-2011 05:26 PM

I say if you can afford them get them. They make the quilting fun when you use the right ruler. You know "the right tool for the job." They are expensive, but I use Joanns 50% coupons to purchase them.

madamekelly 04-15-2011 07:02 PM

I do. Will you? Who knows, but you will learn as you go, what works for you.

Welcome from N. Texas. Yes, you need all kinds of rulers, from the straight ones to the specialty ones. I've got one for making Dresden plate blades and one for finishing the binding--so many different ones that it takes three special ruler holders to hold them all. But I didn't get them all at once. They just proliferated over the years.

Welcome! I grew up and went to school in El Paso and miss it.

Rulers! Can't have too many. There is always a new one that is better coming out and one just right for a certain project. They really make a difference.

Happy Quilting!

Flying geese ruler has changed my life. I really do use all the others.

Jammin' Jane 04-15-2011 09:12 PM

Yup! Gotta have 'em! Some are used more than others, but they sure make the job easier!

audsgirl 04-15-2011 09:47 PM

Hello from Minnesota. Being an incurable gadget junkie, the answer is "yes."

wtxpeach 04-16-2011 07:49 AM

Which flying geese ruler are you using? I have been looking for one, but have not found one that I like yet. Thanks! :)

redmadder, Did you see the one seam flying geese unit that was on here last week? I think it was Ricky Tims that did it.
