Our local newspaper sells end rolls for $5. it is more paper than you will ever use. We have packed 2 households for moving with it and still have 1/2 left. Check out your newspaper's office.

This works for me because I don't stitch through the paper, I fold on the stitching line (which I can now see, since the paper is transparent) and stitch right next to it. Saves me from all that tedious tearing. Saves wear on the needle, too.

I decided to try my hand at paper piecing so after I read this thread I tore out several sheets from a doodle pad from Dollar Tree and used my ruler and rotary cutter to trim off 1/2 inch from the side. It fed through the printer just fine and is working great for the Mariner's Star I am piecing. I am guessing you could probably trim as many as 20 sheets at a time. Harriet Hargraves says she uses her rotary cutter all the time to prep her blocks and it doesn't dull the blade. So 60 sheets for a dollar seems cheap enough. I still have to see how it tears off.

I've heard of people doing this with freezer paper but not regular paper - how do you keep your fabric from shifting about while you are working on your block? Do you glue stick the fabric to the paper or something? I absolutely love paper piecing and would love to know your method if you don't sharing :)

Yes, I also use a glue stick on the first piece when paper piecing. The newsprint tears off just great! I used the scribble pads until someone on the board mentioned the reams of newsprint paper. That is when I bought it, so nice not to have to cut the scribble pad paper before running it through the printer.

We bought an old print shop here in Oregon years ago that still had the typesetting machine, letters and lead pigs that were melted down! I have gotten the rolls from the local paper who finally started charging minimal. Any suggestions as to what to do with that heavy core afterwards - - - Marysewfun |
