Help with border please

I can't believe it's November!!! I hope everyone is well!! My creativity seems to be asleep and this is my first bed size quilt, it's a king size and the blocks are 14 inches and the border will need to be 12 inches. With such a wide border I'm stumped...... this quilt was a special request, and they wanted just a simple log cabin, nothing fussy or fancy, just something in blue.
1: 3in inner border with a 6 in log cabin block followed by another 3in border. 2: same as above with 6 in star block in either the dark blue or scrappy (same as fabric in log cabins). 3: just plain mitered borders in a dark blue, med blue and white. This is all I could think of and would appreciate any assistance and thoughts! |
I have two quilts I needed a wide border on, so I went with a piano key. Breaks up that large area. Maybe a thin solid border, then piano key and another solid.

If you go with the simple triple border that would leave great space for some fancy quilting. Plus, the border will be the overhang. Not sure I would add another pattern into the border (like a star). It is very pretty.

Great colours for a very peaceful looking quilt.
You mentioned a 12" border .... is that the max? Or is that the minimum? and it could it be 14". If so, what about another row of blocks .... To me, a log cabin is one of the quilts that shows off perfectly without a border. |

I would try a red, then gray, then black border. If you have pieces of the fabric, lay them out and see how they look. I think this would really look good. You could use a 2", then a 4", then a 6". Add seam allowances. I don't think a log cabin needs to be quilted fancy.

As someone else suggested a piano key border to give it character or what about a ribbon border? Don't know if that's what its called but it looks like 2 ribbons crossing over each other continually in the various blues or maybe use the red and neutrals to bring them out.
