Help with border

1 Attachment(s)
I make a new quilt but can't figure out what kind or color of border I need. Please help

DOTTYMO 10-07-2013 10:27 PM

My idea for a border would be a solid to answer your question . Why do you need a border? Just bag out.

Reb 10-08-2013 12:00 AM

Very pretty colors. Choose any one in a solid and it will work. Take it to the store or use your stash to try different colors to see which you like. IMHO I think I'd choose a yellow. But I do agree with Dottymo that a border isn't needed. It's up to your personal preference.

117becca 10-08-2013 01:18 AM

I agree - i'm not sure a border is necessary.....I see a soft white actually.

JenniePenny 10-08-2013 01:58 AM

Your quilt is very pretty and fresh looking. If you know who is getting the quilt, you can pick out a border color. I think a pink solid would be a great choice, unless the quilt is for a man or boy. In that case, I'd use a royal blue or a deep green.
It also depends on what size you'd like the quilt to be. Some styles of quilts look great without a border, and yours is in this category as well!

QuiltnNan 10-08-2013 02:13 AM

i like it without a border.

snipforfun 10-08-2013 02:45 AM

No border needed

sandy l 10-08-2013 02:59 AM

Great looking quilt. I agree with some of the other suggestions, go without the border.

Misty's Mom 10-08-2013 03:01 AM

I vote for no border

Nanny's dollface 10-08-2013 03:22 AM

I like it without a border.

Inez Ruth 10-08-2013 05:20 AM

Another no border vote.

Tartan 10-08-2013 05:21 AM

Does it need to be bigger? You could do a border in the stripe fabric that is on the full diagonal, use a yellow solid that matches the yellow strip in the top (cause I love yellow) or do a piano key border using all the stripes to add to the movement. Great top by the way!

Dina 10-08-2013 05:30 AM

What a great quilt! Obviously it is personal preference. I know that I prefer borders, maybe you do too! I offer no help for a border selection though, other than to suggest auditioning different fabrics. That is the only way I can decide. I just wanted to tell you that I like your quilt!

Why not "audition" different colors for a border, just to see if that suits your fancy.
I personally like borders as they give your eye a place to rest.

DonnaPBradshaw 10-08-2013 06:09 AM

I would just add binding that has strips and cut on the bias!

bigsister63 10-08-2013 06:27 AM

I think no border needed. how big do you want the quilt tto be? if you need a bigger quilt and have more fabric then you just need to add more blocks. the binding will frame the quilt and almost look like a border. I think a yellow binding but use what ever color you have or what color you want the quilt to be.

mckwilter 10-08-2013 07:05 AM

I agree that it really doesn't need a border, unless it needs to be bigger or you really want to put one on. I would go with a solid, at least for a first border, then if you want to do a piano key or stripe on the diagonal, it wouldn't run into the blocks. Finish with a third border in a solid to "frame" the piano keys, then maybe do the binding as a stripe on the diagonal or a pieced binding using various lengths of the fabric you used for the blocks. I am a big fan of pieced bindings.

Whatever you do, it's a lovely quilt. Oh, my choice, if it's for a girl, would be a solid lavender/purple.

BellaBoo 10-08-2013 07:19 AM

No border gets my vote. I don't think a solid border does anything for a quilt but make it bigger. I use wide binding when I think the quilt needs a frame.

nativetexan 10-08-2013 07:21 AM

a solid cream or crème should look great.

cindyb 10-08-2013 07:26 AM

IF you need to make this bigger, I guess I'm different from all other suggestions. I would go with that dark color in the pink striped for the border. I would like to make that beautiful center POP - not blend.

barny 10-08-2013 07:32 AM

I see a lot of light lavender. Why not border with a pale solid lavender. And by the way, you have cut some KIND OF PERFECT SQUARES. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! I like it.

tessagin 10-08-2013 07:51 AM

REally like your quilt!

QuiltNama 10-08-2013 08:02 AM

I don't think it needs a border. Pretty as is, really like it.

cashs_mom 10-08-2013 02:40 PM

It looks great without a border! I'd probably just use a narrow binding in dark purple or dark green

ann clare 10-08-2013 02:47 PM

Beautiful quilt. I would go for dark binding, no border.

DogHouseMom 10-08-2013 03:00 PM

I like it as is with a striped bias binding ... but if you need a border for size ... I would add a narrow white or cream border with a wider striped border with mitered corners.

yel 10-08-2013 03:40 PM

pink chocolate or blue ...depending on the person getting it or what color the room is it is going in

AngeliaNR 10-08-2013 03:44 PM

I like borders--they seem to "stop" the pattern Though I'm not a yellow fan, I think a yellow border would look nice. Maybe choose one of the darker colors for a narrow border, then yellow outside of that?

AmyFreeMotionQuilting 10-08-2013 04:16 PM

My opinion: Either a solid border in one of the colors and bind with one of the striped fabrics, or no border and a solid binding.

GKSM 10-08-2013 04:19 PM

No border necessary but if you do solid, pink, yellow or blue. Nice job. Love all the different stripes.

irishrose 10-08-2013 04:20 PM

I'd do a 2 1/2" wide purple border and then bind it in a stripe cut on the diagonal. If you don't do a solid before binding or border you are going to have a lot of color bleeding visually if you want a striped binding. If you want a wider border, I'd do a narrow strip of purple first.

Retired Fire Chief 10-09-2013 03:02 AM

I also vote for no border, if you do add one please post a photo. I can't envision anything else added to your top.

Sandi 10-09-2013 03:35 AM

well your binding can work as a border if you use a solid. If you want a wider border, I like the cream color idea and then a striped binding. but audition first to see what you like, I really like this quilt a lot!

Lavada 10-09-2013 03:38 AM

no border pretty quilt

WMUTeach 10-09-2013 04:57 AM

You do not need a border. But if you realy want one the color that jumps out to me is the medium pink. A solid color of course with perhaps one of the darker colors as a narrow inner border. Like you use of stripes. Interesting and unique.

caspharm 10-09-2013 07:53 AM

It looks great as is, just use a solid for binding.

MargeD 10-09-2013 11:13 AM

You certainly can add a border, however, I think it looks great without one. Love your fabrics, and it's a beautiful quilt.

IBQUILTIN 10-09-2013 01:11 PM

I lie it without a border, but a solid in any of the colors would work

I agree. Your quilt is very colorful and white would make a nice frame for it.

duckydo 10-09-2013 04:29 PM

If you want to set it off with a border I would chose a small 1 1/2 inch border of the dark color in the stripes, looks like a brown, then I would chose any of the other colors for a second border. just mho. but it does look alright with no border. you could just bind it in any of the colors in the quilt
