Since your blocks are solid color fabrics, I would choose a small print that has the green, blue and yellow for the sashing. I think it would tone down the bright colors.
|
I was perusing the children's fabric at my LQS last week and there are some adorable fabric lines in bright colors with all sorts of themes (dinasours, bugs, aliens, etc). I wonder if you could work these blocks into a quilt using these kid's fabrics. Maybe even use your blocks as large cornerstones in a themed quilt. Try window shopping online for children's fabrics to get some ideas. What you have is an opportunity to exercise the creative side of your brain (I can never remember if it is the left or right side). I would have brainstorm away and have fun with them!!

I'd go with the same dark blue as sashing then a narrow border of the light blue and a wide border of the dark blue again. Another obvious choice is a black marble in one wide border with the dark blue as sashing. The blue will balance the yellow without making it look sickly (or sickening). I actually like the colors. |
Sorry, I don't think that yellow is hideous. Hope you can figure something out or save them for someone who wants orphan blocks!

Actually, I really like red and yellow together. |
YOU HAVE GOTTEN SOME REALLY GOOD IDEAS HERE TO WORK WITH. I THINK IF YOU WANT YOUR COLORS TO POP GO WITH THE BLACK SASHES THEN THE BLUE OTHERWISE THE TWO BLUES WOULD BRING IT TOGETHER. THE BLUE IS KIND OF UNIFORM FOR IT ALL. GOOD LUCK AND LET US HAVE A LOOK SEE WHEN ITS DONE.

i MADE A QUILT WITH THE SQUARE IN A SQUARE IN A SQUARE AND DID THE SASHING IN DAISY PRINT THAT i BOUGHT AT jOANN'S. IT TURNED OUT VERY WELL. tHE DAISIES ARE WHITE
|
People love hideous colors nowdays. I think some white or floral should tone it down abit. You might try that. I like the blocks, myself. I think they would look great in a kids quilt. You might even applique some little animals or ballons or something on to draw attention off the yellow.
|
Well -every thing old is new again- take a block with all 4 colors back out to Hancocks or WalMarts I'll bet you will find those colors in quite a few printed fabrics especially WM s marked downs I needed some brites for a baby quilt sashing and borders and Wally had the better selection
|
Why not use your machine to do lines of embroidery over the offending colours to make them look better? You could always fussy cut some blue flowers/hearts/stars etc. and applique them to the blocks to embellish them a bit. Then try steel grey or black for the sashing. (Just my suggestions).

Would white or black tone it down with sashing??? ;-)
|
"Bright" blocks can be fun. Play with some bright colors for a sashing. I would use some bright blue and use the same for a border.
|
I have the exact same blocks and they are put away because I don't know what to do with them either. I had an idea in mind but when I did a 'sample' sashing, it didn't look good. I bought my blocks when they had been reduced to 50% off and thought I could surely find something to finish them. Would you like me to send you my blocks and you could put them all together and have a quilt?
|
They blocks would look good on a baby quilt since they are made of primary colors.
|
Don't try to DO anything with the colors but use them!
Browns or black would really mess the happy quality of the blocks up. Find the same colors in polka dots, or stripes, or florals and go with the flow! If you really don't like it for yourself, think how happy a child would be to receive such a happy quilt! I have made baby quilts using all different brights and always binding them in black and white zebra print and the babies eyes can follow the colors. Enjoy the joy of the colors and make someone else happy with it. You have done a lovely job on the blocks! |

Maybe find a floral with these colors but with a white background, which may help calm the colors some.

I'm with nancy I...please be sure and show us your completed quilt when you finish it. Lots of good ideas here and I am curious as to what you will come up with. This will be a wonderful quilt.
|
I wouldn't add any more pattern or prints -- it would just muddle things up I think.
What about a pale yellow? |
I think I would find a floral print that has those colors but not quite so bright. You will always treasure your first project. Good luck!
|
I actually like those colors LOL. I'd try to find a floural with blues and yellows and greens.

Put them on the front of shoppings bags.Walmart are blue and walgreen are green.Just a thought.

What about a raspberry marble?

How about dots, to continue the lighthearted look? Maybe something like these:

I think I would go with the dark blue in the blocks..........
|
Lots of people go for the brightest of colors so don't feel bad about yours. I would choose a print for sashing-maybe a white background with all the brights in it. If it's going to be for a child, what about a circus print? They are also vivid and joyful. Or a bright floral?

I would add floral fabrics to soften. Found these at j joanns.
Blue, yellow and hint of green. |
The colors opposite (or complementary) to yellow are purple and the blue. Check out the color wheel and explanation below. I would add some prints, tone on tone etc for some variation. Or, you can always make larger (16 to 18" blocks - simple: Ohio Star) and use what you have made as the centers of these new blocks.
