Several years ago as my first quilting effort I did BOMs at Hancock Fabrics. They turned out pretty well for a beginner and I would like to put them together as a quilt top. They stopped carrying the colors (for good reason) before I bought the sashing and the yellow is screechingly hideous -- the picture doesn't do its "hideousity" full justice -- so I don't know what color to use. I would appreciate suggestions.

Your blocks made me think of some fat quarters I have. They are floral in blues, yellow & green. Can just see something like them for your sashing, one of your blues for a narrow border & then finshed off a wide border of the floral again. Maybe find a floral with these colors but with a white background, which may help calm the colors some.
|
I think I would use a beige or brown for sashing or you could be daring and try tea dying. that would tone down all the colors. And I learned a newword! "hideousity"
;-) |
LOL! Sorry! what a prediciment. So you have blocks for complete quilt, but no sashing? Or is the pic all the blocks you have?
The fabrics are all blenders, do you have a stash fabric that has 2 or more of the colors? A blue? A green? Sash it in that? No stash? buy a bold geometric or a floral that picks up the colors. If those handful of blocks are all you have, sew them together & give as a baby gift. I like to make tummy time mats. Very heavy quilts that wont scrunch up when baby wiggles. Usually back with denim for the weight/stability. A baby will love your bright colors. (and won't know they are "ugly" :-D ) sorry about duplicate info, see I was typing from the first post only.... |
How about a dark green sashing. It would act like black and tone things down. You are right the colors look great in the photo
|
As long as those colors are so primary, how 'bout a red blender for sashing. Navy for the stopper strip and a bright primary print with all those colors for the wide border. If you can't beat 'em, join em! I like brights - can you tell?
Actually, I really like red and yellow together. |
I'd look for some printed or floral fabric in similar colors. Cut this into blocks the same size as the ones you have & put one between each of your 'yellow' ones.
Or you could make potholders, pillows or table runners... |
I think black would look good, but I don't think the yellow looks bad. I love bright colors bordered with black. They really pop.
|
I would stay with the marbles, not adding any florals or prints at all. And, in my opinion, beige and/or brown would just look like mud with those brights.
I'd go with the same dark blue as sashing then a narrow border of the light blue and a wide border of the dark blue again. Another obvious choice is a black marble in one wide border with the dark blue as sashing. The blue will balance the yellow without making it look sickly (or sickening). I actually like the colors. |
How about trying hot pink? Use tonal, no prints.

If you don't have very many of these, I would make pillows for my porch. Bet they would be very pretty.
|
use a small plaid ,check in blue and white or a small floral print with several colors to include your block colors
|
If you don't like the color, try to tea dye them to tone them down a bit. Try on a scrap first!

the best way i know how to tone down a bright yellow is with grey
|
Remember when it all gets quilted that the color of the thread used there can also help detract from the yellow.
A friend just finished a similar BOM project. She used a solid sorta marbled color for every other block, used one of the block colors [not yellow!] as sashing, and put the whole thing on pointe. It came out looking great. The every other blocks and sashing really toned down the yellow. Then the quilting will also help. ali |
I would go with black or dark gray if it was me. I do like the colors too.
I love your new word....hideousity!!!:) |
I would say black!

I think plaid sashing and borders would help. Personally, I love yellow.
|
What great ideas, and so fast! I posted the picture, put a pot roast in the oven and came back to two pages of suggestions. It's so great to have so many helping hands/heads always available. I like the floral idea. It might make the quilt clever instead of tacky.
|
I like yellow, too, but this is real "fingers-on-the-blackboard" yellow.
|
Got to wear dark glasses, i would have no idea. I seen some good ideas posted
|
I'd be worried the black my raise the hideosity factor!
Navy ... that way you stick with the blues that are there, and are just adding another to it. Batik ... You might find a really nice batik that would blend well with this. Jungle Fabric or Hawaiian Print ... that has your colours in there. |
I think a dark blue would look good for sashing
|
my high school colors. i actually had pants that color yellow i wore with a royal blue sweater on spirit day. lol. you couldn't pay me to go back to my teenage years. lol.
I agree with the black. black sashing would break it up and frame it. i think it'd make the colors look great. |
[i]ghostrider[/y] has a wonderful suggestion. Or - what about looking at Batiks? Many Batiks have wonderful bright blues and yellows all together in one piece.
|
I like the blocks and the colors.
I think they look cheerful and bold. I saw some yellow, blue, and green floral at WalMart about a year ago that I think would look great as a border. Maybe a dark green or dark navy for the sashing. |
I don't call it hideous, I like it!
|
get a floral with all those colors in it. do sashings maybe and a nice border with it.
|
I think if you can find the primary rainbow stripe, that I would use that for sashing. It was a very popular seller a few years ago but I saw a similar print last year?
|
I see a rich black to give it drama. Black can solve a multitude of problems but to tell you the truth I bet it all turns out great. Let's see your pics once you decide.

I like the idea of a floral for the sashing and the outside border. The blocks are beautiful, you've done great work. I'd love to see the finished quilt.
|
Awww...this was the first quilt I made also! I finished it with the blue sashing, green and blue borders, and blue backing. (just like the pattern!) I liked it, and felt the yellow was toned down considerably with the cool blue and green, Mine was twin sized. That brings back memories! I'd love to see what you decide!

I wonder what they would look like as D4p or D9p???? Or maybe add a diferent corner... Take a square sew it on. ???? However I like yellow lol. I also think you did a great job :) hugs
|
Oh someone mentioned print, maybe jungle print or hawaiian (sharp), eyes would be drawn to the wild factor lol... I still think it could make a intereting DP (smile)
|
they dont seem so HIDEOUS to me..they look like primary colors inthe blocks...try using other primary colors or possibly a batik
