So I got this fabric to incorporate into a Christmas gift quilt for DH, who loves pigs. I was going make this "Rectangles Behind Bars" quilt http://www.judysisneros.com/FloraFauna.htm with the pig fabric for the focus fabric, but after I bought all my fabric I realized that the focus fabric is supposed to be a large scale print. I really like this quilt design, and I've been trying to think of a way to incorporate the pig fabric into the design. I was thinking of making it into a square (or almost square) quilt with just one "focus fabric" strip. I could either just put a strip of the pig fabric instead of the "behind bars" area if that makes sense...but then it wouldn't look very quilt-y. Or I could make that section into a square and do a frame around 4 snowflake blocks with the pig fabric for the centers.

Or I could scrap this design entirely and do something else, maybe with four patch blocks.... Please help me figure out how to make my pig-themed quilt!

What about a One Block Wonder??

Maride 10-05-2009 02:45 PM

I have no idea but I had to answer. The image developed slowly and I was not expecting pigs!!

I am sure anything you come up with will be amazing!

Good luck,

Maria

Sure, nothing says Christmas like angelic piggies. Love those porkers.

What about using a square of the pig fabric as a focus fabric and making a log cabin alternate block. You could call it "On the farm"

caedmyn 10-05-2009 03:03 PM

Or maybe I could do something like this http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltbl...07_lotto_4.htm ?

Do you mean something like this Mock Log Cabin Block http://quilting.about.com/od/blockof...k_logcabin.htm but with the pig fabric instead of a four patch in the center?

It's for a Christmas present, not supposed to be particularly Christmas-y...

I was kidding about the pigs being "christmasy." I think it's a really cute idea.

The pattern you showed is an option and it would work if the 4-patch included some pigs. But that is not what I was thinking.

I imagine a regular or a wonky log cabin block made in the rusty, red, brown tones that are in the pig fabric. THen, I would cut a square of pig fabric, the same size as the log cabin and alternate one pig- one log cabin. In those colors, the log cabin could be a log barn - hence my original title.

Another idea: Have you seen some of the quilts done with Olivia (the pig) fabric? You may decide to use one of those patterns and feature your parade of pigs in place of Olivia.

I second that. It's definitely what I would do.

pookie ookie 10-05-2009 03:37 PM

I would probably do something simple like a hole in the barn door block with a piggy face as the center square. :0D

I searched for pig quilts last night. I'm interested in piggy fabrics and designs for a someday pig theme. Hope to see project pix from you.

LucyInTheSky 10-05-2009 03:53 PM

If you did a One Block Wonder, wouldn't you lose the pigs? The pigs are so cute, and especially since your husband likes pigs, why would you want them to lose their pigginess?

MollieSue 10-05-2009 04:06 PM

Ones I have done where I've fussy cut a particular pattern are :
Churn Dash, Hole in the Barn Door, Warm Wishes, Sawtooth Star, and Courthouse Steps.
:D

I love the fabric....made me think of my mom...she loved pigs also. We just lost her 2 years ago....and don't laugh.....but on her headstone.....we have a little pig....that has angel wings......its the cutiest thing.....this fabric made me think of her....thank you.

What about this pattern???
Warm Wishes

Jim's Gem 10-05-2009 05:13 PM

I was thinking warm wishes as well.

caedmyn 10-05-2009 05:19 PM

Hmmm...so which of the suggested blocks would be fairly easy? I've only done a couple of fairly simply quilts (nothing with triangles) and I don't have too much time between two small children (currently trying to out-scream each other!) and a dozen other (smaller) gifts to make for Christmas...

Judy Gail 10-05-2009 05:32 PM

I like the log cabin idea. You could do the quilt in the log cabin design and use the pigs for the border.

How about a snowball block or attic window with the piggy as the focus fabric? Would be great with other farm fabrics, if you know what I mean.

joeyoz 10-05-2009 06:27 PM

What about Stack-n-Whack.

caedmyn 10-05-2009 06:48 PM

Hmmm...I like the Attic Window and the Warm Wishes. Attic Window looks kind of complicated, and I don't know if the pig print would show up very well since it's kind of dark? But warm wishes says it needs a large scale print and the pig print isn't...the picture is of a 12" tall section so the pigs are only about 1.5" tall.

ScubaK 10-05-2009 07:13 PM

What about the star block the Eddie used for his table runner...
Anyone know the name?
I can't remember....
Kirsten

ellenmg 10-06-2009 05:49 AM

...Oh yea, Attic window, maybe big "window" panels so you really see the pigs... How cute!

bearisgray 10-06-2009 05:54 AM

Put it in the border. Then pick up colors from the fabric for whatever you choose to do for the middle of the quilt.

bebe 10-06-2009 06:24 AM

go with warm wishes you cand use some complimemtary colors!!!!!!

Warm wishes is easy. When my friend wanted to make her first quilt we chose warm wishes. One hint: Cut the pig blocks after you have sewn together the strip sets. Measure and cut your pig blocks the size of your strip sets, not the size listed in the pattern. That way if your piecing is off a little the pig blocks can accommodate that.

Have fun! I am working on quilt #2 for my husband this year. The first one was lightweight and he has requested a heavier one for the winter. Spoiled isn't he!?

Harmony 10-06-2009 06:48 AM

I have not ideas for you on what kind of quilt to make, but that fabric sure made me smile!

Dawn Hendrix 10-06-2009 06:51 AM

I agree warm wishes and it is EASY ....

You can also use the fabric in the border, or use uncut fabric in one of the hexagons. It's fun looking at one of the patterns in a OBW and figuring out what it was, especially if the original fabric was of something non-flower-like. I did one with a dog fabric and people are always finding the noses, or tongues, or such.

quiltingbea 10-06-2009 07:37 AM

What is "warm wishes"? Does anyone have the pattern or website?

sewhappy57 10-06-2009 07:38 AM

Love the Piggies! Good luck with it! :D :D :D

Rubyrednails2 10-06-2009 07:39 AM

It would be a cute print for the backing or a nice border print for the front. I would use rather simple blocks so the pig print would stand out.

Teacher 10-06-2009 07:43 AM

I really like the warm wishes design. You wont lose the pigs then. They are so cute that it would be a real shame if they disappeared! Also its quick to do which will be a bonus with children and other distraction!

wvdek 10-06-2009 07:50 AM

Love your piggies. They are so cute. I like the warm wishes pattern. Whatever you do, because it is for hubby, simple design warm quilt is what he will want. Have fun!

JudeWill 10-06-2009 07:58 AM

I don't know why this wouldn't work for the "rectangles behind bars" pattern. It would look like the pigs are in a pen, wouldn't it?

Junebug57 10-06-2009 11:11 AM

I agree with Betty. If your repeat is at least 8 inches apart, this would make a very interesting quilt. The "One Block Wonders" book tells how to cut the fabric and how many layers you would need of the repeats.

You would then probably need only a couple or so border fabrics and a backing fabric. I have made some very successful quilts from this book.
Just be careful of stretching when piecing together because some of the triangle edges will be, of necessity, on-the-bias.

caedmyn 10-06-2009 12:04 PM

I was going to go with the warm wishes blocks, but I'm thinking I may go with the Rectangles behind Bars after all...I laid out some of the fabric and I do think it would look like the pigs were in a pen, which is probably the idea I had when I originally saw the pattern and bought the pig fabric, but that was a year ago and I'd forgotten.

maggiesquilt 10-06-2009 12:08 PM

I was thinking about fussy cutting those cute little faces. What fun you will have with this fabric! :D

travlr99 10-06-2009 06:58 PM

Hi - how about a snowball pattern - you can make the "snowball" as large as you want with the pig fabric, and complimentary colors for the alternating squares. should make up quickly!!

Terri

Lisanne 10-06-2009 07:17 PM

Why not just keep the piggy fabric in one piece and quilt the outlines of the pig shapes?

Thinking of Christmas dinner, were you?

redrummy 10-06-2009 08:25 PM

Warm wishes is easy. Three strips that when sewn together equal the size of the block. Then just sew together, I did one with 61/2 in blocks, 2 1/2 in strips sewn together, cut into 6 1/2 inch segments then sew in strips. just remember to keep the 2 outside fabrics going back and forth to create the pattern around the squares.
