Hi! I would love to make a quilt using the same pattern as this block on a barn quilt in Kentucky. Does anyone know what the pattern is called?

Thanks!

I have no idea, but love the block.

nativetexan 08-06-2011 07:18 AM

I would make a larger copy of the block and draw lines down the center and across the center. then draw lines to make squares in that and you have it. make four and sew together. sometimes it is difficult to find a pattern for something but you can make it up yourself.

Quiltastic 08-06-2011 07:18 AM

It is great, isn't it. I actually want to make a big square quilt just using that one block, then hang it inside of the barn where my wedding reception will be next summer.

Quiltastic 08-06-2011 07:18 AM

Oh, thanks! Good idea.

Ok, if you're going for size, then I would make the side X's out of HST-blocks.

The whole image is essentially on a 4x4 grid, so if you want it to be 60" square, then each corner block, for instance, would be 15" finished. And the 15" is still a workable size.

How big do you want it? 60"? 68"? 76?" I'll give you the piece sizes.

Quiltastic 08-06-2011 07:28 AM

Oh wow, thanks! I would like it to be around 80 inches square, so we can use it on a queen bed.

What does HST stand for? I am new to quilting--the only quilt I have made so far is the one in my profile photo, which I just did last winter for my niece.

Thanks!

jdiane318 08-06-2011 07:31 AM

HST= half square triangle

Quiltastic 08-06-2011 07:31 AM

Actually, I just looked up bedspread sizes, rather than just sheet sizes, and it looks like I should do it at 100 inches square, to make sure that it will fully cover an extra-deep mattress.

OK, now don't laugh! I'm trying to learn how to analyze a block! The 4 white squares in the upper right could obviously be a single square.

This is great!!! I will definitely use this as a pattern. Thanks!

I'll post the finished product in the spring...

Not to stir the pot, but just be aware that with each square being 24"**, and hanging down on the sides of the bed, it really isn't going to look like much on the bed, except a bunch of HUGE pieces of fabric.

(instead of 25" - math/cutting is easier w/o half inches at this size, plus you're new - I love your avatar quilt - but you don't need the added hassle of cutting bigger than your rulers)

Perhaps making the pattern fit the top of the bed, and then doing something for the sides hanging down. A queen size mattress top measures 60" x 80" across the top, so you're talking a 20" overhang on the sides.

Just mentioning it. And congratulations.

btiny36 08-06-2011 07:56 AM

WOW MTS you are sooooo helpful with the math thing and helping to figure out blocks and stuff....here's one ole big hug out to you.....thanks for helping me with the Happy Hour block.....you are awsome

PaperPrincess 08-06-2011 07:58 AM

I Agree with MTS. I would scale the main pattern to fit the top of the mattress and add borders. Easier to construct, and you won't loose part of the pattern in the fall of the quilt.

Quiltastic 08-06-2011 08:15 AM

Really good point to scale back so that the quilt makes sense on the bed.

I just measured the top+sides of the deep double bed that I have now and 80 inches would work well on it. So, I'll make an 80 inch square quilt with no border (to stay true to the barn-quilt look when it is hanging in the barn).

Thanks for the congratulations and for all of the great input! Really helpful, especially for a newbie like me who loves quilting and fabrics, but does not know what will be most effective (like staying under the 24.5 inch length of my ruler!).

P.S. I think I'll use this Joel Dewberry fabric, along with a white linen/cotton blend for the quilt.

Wedding colors are mustard and white (-:

This is the reason I love this quilting board. There is always help to be found.

chamby 08-07-2011 04:00 AM

All these replies were great but no one actually answered the original question. What is the name of the block???

Greenheron 08-07-2011 05:03 AM

Oh, I know the name of that block! It's called Drunken Goose Crash with a Fall in Square Pond center.

love barns quilts...posting to watch thread also :)

Arleners 08-07-2011 07:49 AM

Just a thought. You are looking for the decorative Barn hanging for your wedding, AND you want it to be a bed quilt afterwards.

Why not make the large block square as the width of your mattress and put on a temporary binding. Then, after using it as a hanging, use the quilt as you go method to add on the overhang from the sides, top and bottom of a bed quilt.

Two uses for the center block, each suited for its purpose.

My thought also. Have it on the bed to be seen.

MargeD 08-07-2011 10:30 AM

Sorry, but it's a lovely quilt. Have you tried looking it up on Quilterscache.com? Might be worth a try.

Nikki and Co. 08-07-2011 10:53 AM

I have no idea, but I love the block and wish I had that barn! Your idea for the wedding is fantastic....good luck!

kwilter 08-07-2011 10:56 AM

Aren't QB members awesome? This is worth posting twice!

maryellen2u 08-07-2011 11:31 AM

Yes QB members are awesome and I am so glad someone was able to solve the problem and advice. Now I would like to know the measurements and how I would go about making this lovely one block quilt. Please tell me what size of each fabric to cut, Maybe I can put it together without extraordinary detailed instructions! Thanks in advance for your help!

Delilah 08-07-2011 12:00 PM

Would it be easier to make flying geese on the sides instead of half square triangles? I guess that would depend on how good one is at FG as opposed to HST but it would cut down on the number of seams.

Dakota Rose 08-07-2011 12:54 PM

Can't wait to see finished quilt!

jojosnana 08-07-2011 01:43 PM

Wow I would love to see it hanging and done.....

Gerbie 08-07-2011 02:35 PM

MTS you are great at figuring this math for blocks. I am going to remember just who to ask if I run into a problem. It takes me forever to figure out just how I need to do one with changing sizes. Hope you don't mind if I give you a pm sometime when I get in a bind. Thanks in advance. Gerbie

What a neat idea. I love the idea of using a quilt for your wedding decorations and then being able to use it afterwards. Perhaps when you get it finished, and if you have time, you could make a quilt for the bridal table to be used later also, or use a pretty table runner and placemats that you might want to use later.
I almost forgot, congratulations my dear, wishing you and your future DH many many years of happiness and a long lasting marriage. My DH and I will celebrate our 41st anniv. on Aug. 22.

JeanDal 08-07-2011 03:21 PM

Don't know the name but like the pattern.
