Making a Christmas present for my 12 year old grandson. I've got the quilt put together, but for the life of me can't think of a "fun" backing. Spent 1 hour looking on a fabric website and couldn't find fabric that inspired me. I have at least 2 yards of the Route 66 print left, but it's not enough to completely cover the back. Any ideas? I seem to be at a loss here.

lfstamper 07-30-2012 04:33 PM

Add a border around the two yards with a solid color. Nice quilt!

OCquilter 07-30-2012 04:43 PM

I have seen map fabric which would be cute. I think I just saw some at Joann's last week.

I have seen fabric with stop signs, yield etc...maybe you can find some of that. I am sure whatever you use will be nice :)

Just wanted to say that your quilt is great. I'm sure your GS will love it no matter what you put on the back.

TanyaL 07-30-2012 05:05 PM

Great looking quilt! A very lucky boy.

QuiltE 07-30-2012 05:09 PM

ditto ... scrappy back using your route 66 fabric

Or if you want a change there is fabric that has road signs on it.

And what about a total change? How about the fabric that looks like clouds as that way you could keep the blue and white coodinating on the back. Or ocean waves.

chips88 07-30-2012 05:10 PM

i like the map fabric idea. and also that is a very nice quilt. a very lucky boy indeed...

patski 07-30-2012 05:10 PM

I bought some black & white checked, looks like the checker flag at a race, can also be used as a giant checkers game. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get ideas and I think yoru quilt is great

Mitch's mom 07-30-2012 05:10 PM

How about vintage cars?

mucky 07-30-2012 05:56 PM

Fabric.com has lots of juvenile fabrics that would work. I've seen roads with cars on them.

BellaBoo 07-30-2012 06:09 PM

Route 66 is all about diners and food! A great fabric with diners and diner food?

wesing 07-30-2012 06:22 PM

I've seen muscle car fabric that would be great for the back of this quilt.

Nice quilt!! Does he have a favorite race car driver? I like the checkered flag design or the road map ideas

HillCountryGal 07-31-2012 03:56 AM

Thanks y'all. Great ideas.

They got me to thinking in a different direction and that's exactly what was needed. Think I need to make a trip to a real fabric store (what a problem :D ). I had bought some black & while checked that makes you think of Nascar flags but, the black and white just didn't look right with all that blue. Depending on what I find at the store, the black and white might work in somehow for the backing.

**This was like a virtual quilt meeting. Cool.

I think the checkered flag look on it's own might be just too much! Breaking it with the lefltover fabrics from the front would work perfectly. They could each be the same width, or if it was me, I'd probably go with variable widths of all.

nygal 07-31-2012 05:19 AM

My grandson would love that!!

DawnA 07-31-2012 05:20 AM

It would be cool if you could make it look like a road. Black with a white line on sides and yellow strips down the middle.

joyce blint 07-31-2012 03:03 PM

There's some (new?) Rte 66 fabric previewed on Martha's quits today. Maybe you could combine some of it??

sept97 08-01-2012 02:47 AM

I would just use what you have and make borders around it until it's the size you need. I've done it plenty of times and it looks very nice

this one sounds the best - could be reversible that way.

Grace MooreLinker 08-01-2012 03:38 AM

Nice quilt, he will enjoy what ever backing you put on it.

zennia 08-01-2012 04:28 AM

Did you see this

Delta 08-01-2012 04:30 AM

piece your back together. that way it makes it a 2 sided quilt. I do it all the time.

AnnT 08-01-2012 04:49 AM

Nice quilt! He's a lucky grandson!! I like the cars suggestion.

callen 08-01-2012 04:55 AM

I'm sure whatever backing you choose will be fine. Just wanted to say what a FANTASTIC quilt !!! He is going to absolutely love it. If he doesn't then I will send you my address & I can give it to my GS who is 11. LOL

Vat 08-01-2012 05:04 AM

There is a really cute Route 66 fabric at JoAnn's if there is one close to you.

mary705 08-01-2012 05:31 AM

I would also add borders around it until it was the size needed. If you have any of the other colors used on the fron, use them. Great quilt btw!

I agree with this, I have done something similar several times & it comes out really great, instead of solid color tho I used some tone on tone type prints that I already had. so doing that has a double purpose, using what you already have makes it free! LOL

Love your quilt... I am making one for my 8 year old grandson with "Star Wars" fabric and could not decide on a pattern. Think you have just given me an idea of what to do.

This is how I do it when using theme fabrics. With yours I'd center those 2 yds and make a picture window -carry the window pattern onto the back

scrapinmema 08-01-2012 06:46 AM

Forgot to ask what is the name of this pattern?

catmcclure 08-01-2012 07:01 AM

Take the map from this page: http://route66guys.blogspot.com/2010...s-17-days.html
to Kinko's and have it blown up to whatever size you want. Then, using a light box and a permanent marker, and copy the map onto a large piece of muslin. You could use that for the center back of the quilt and the Route 66 fabric for a border around that.

mdall 08-01-2012 07:03 AM

I also love the map idea. Maybe a map of the U.S. then while he is cuddling with that wonderful quilt he can decide on all the places he would love to visit once he is grown.

IBQLTN 08-01-2012 08:53 AM

Use the leftovers but make roads across the back with black or gray fabric. You could make an entire City grid map with intersecting streets and street signs of names that would mean something to him. You don't have to go overboard but it might be a nice little conversation starter.

Sierra 08-01-2012 09:28 AM

If you go onto eQuilter.com and put in road signs and keep going past page one you will find lots of fabrics that feature car things and highway signs. They are my favorite on-line supply. The photos have always proven to be true to reality.

Its a great boy quilt!

lubberfarmgirl 08-01-2012 11:40 AM

I like Ifstampers suggestion. I've done this on a quilt back .

leighway 08-01-2012 12:22 PM

The first thing I thought of was to find a profile of a mustang or some other car, take it to Kinkos and have it blown up to about 36" or larger. Use your Rt.66 fabric and cut out the large car in one piece. Applique it to some quieter fabric so the silhouette will stand out.

ctipton 08-01-2012 01:38 PM

Ditto make a scrappy back from the left over front Either way it's a cute quilt he'll love it

mrs. fitz 08-01-2012 01:48 PM

What a fun quilt - he'll love it. This is just what I'd do, make the backing out of orange fabric to pick up the orange on the front (my favorite color) and I realize that's a very personal choice. You have a lot of good suggestions given here. And how about using your extra Rte 66 fabric to make your grandson a big comfy pillow?
